The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the team petitioned the league Saturday night for a hardship exception to sign a free agent. According to the newspaper, the team checked into Shawn Kemp, who has reportedly slimmed down in an attempt to make a comeback and met with coach Avery Johnson recently in Houston. Other possibilities include Samaki Walker, George Lynch and Christian Laettner. "The list is a long one," Donnie Nelson told the Dallas Morning News. "Whoever it is has to be someone who is not afraid of the playoff fire." It won't be Latrell Sprewell. "No, this is a backup four," Nelson said.
