So he's not exactly an Xpert gambler, you have to give him Credit for choosing the Bellagio. That's the class of the strip.

Default McCain's role in the Keating Five scandal

Breaking down the facts on McCain's role in the Keating Five scandal

October 7, 2008

BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Political Reporter/apallasch@suntimes.com
Here are the truths and falsehoods regarding Sen. John McCain's role in the Keating Five savings and loan scandal:

1) John McCain was "exonerated" of any role in the scandal.

The Senate Ethics committee censured McCain, saying he "exercised poor judgment in intervening with the regulators."

Bob Bennett, the high-powered Democratic attorney who headed the investigation, said he recommended McCain and Democratic Sen. John Glenn be dropped from the inquiry because he found them far less culpable than the other three senators. But the Senate's Democratic majority refused his recommendation because it would have taken the only Republican out of the inquiry.

2) McCain's actions in meeting with federal regulators cost Americans $2 billion.

Partially True

After McCain and the other senators met twice with regulators, they backed off their plans to close Keating's savings and loan. Former regulator William Black, one of the people in on that meeting, said the cost to taxpayers of that biggest-ever failure of a savings-and-loan grew from $1 billion to $3.4 billion during those two years. Bennett said the other senators were more culpable than McCain and kept up the pressure on regulators even after that second meeting, while McCain dropped the effort.

3) McCain paid back the $13,433 to Keating for nine corporate and charter jet flights McCain and his family took to Keating's home in the Bahamas, among other places, from 1984 to 1986 but which McCain initially failed to disclose as required.

True.

4) McCain was the only one of the five senators to "throw Keating out of his office."

True, but that was before the two meetings.

5) Keating and friends donated $112,000 to McCain's campaigns over the years.

True.

6) McCain's wife and father's company invested $359,000 in a Keating shopping center

True. In a conference call Monday, McCain's attorney John Dowd said McCain was not aware of his wife's investment. But the Washington Post reported that McCain admitted knowing about the investment during Senate hearings on the issue.

6) When told federal regulators were preparing to recommend criminal charges against Lincoln Savings and Loan, McCain backed off his pressuring of regulators. McCain expressed contrition about his role and became an advocate for campaign finance reform.

True.

Barack Obama hits back at John McCain with Keating 5 video

October 6, 2008

FROM ASSOCIATED PRESS

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Democrat Barack Obama, reacting to Republican charges about his links to a 1960s radical, fired back late Sunday with a Web video about John McCain’s role in the Keating Five scandal from the early 1990s.

The short video, being e-mailed to millions of Obama supporters, summarizes a 13-minute Web ‘‘documentary’’ that the campaign plans to distribute Monday, spokesman Tommy Vietor said. He said McCain’s involvement with convicted thrift owner Charles Keating ‘‘is a window into McCain’s economic past, present and future.’’

The video release capped a day of complaints and warnings from Obama supporters. They said McCain was inviting a harsh examination of his past by having his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, repeatedly criticize Obama’s association with Bill Ayers, a founder of the Vietnam-era radical group, the Weather Underground.

Palin said Obama sees America as so imperfect ‘‘that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country.’’ She was referring to Ayers, whose strongest tie to Obama appears to be a 1995 meet-the-candidate event he hosted early in Obama’s political career.

Weather Underground members were blamed for several bombings when Obama was a child. Obama has denounced Ayers’ radical views and activities.

Rep. Rahm Emanuel, a Chicago Democrat and Obama supporter, warned against McCain’s strategy on CNN’s ‘‘Late Edition’’ Sunday.

‘‘If we are going to go down this road — you know, Barack Obama was eight years old, somehow responsible for Bill Ayers,’’ he said. ‘‘At 58, John McCain was associating with Charles Keating.’’ ‘‘If we really want to talk who is associating with who, we will,’’ Emanuel said. ‘‘The American people will lose in that transaction.’’

A short time later, speaking to thousands of people in Asheville, N.C., Obama said McCain and his aides ‘‘are gambling that he can distract you with smears rather than talk to you about substance. They’d rather try to tear our campaign down than lift this country up. It’s what you do when you’re out of touch, out of ideas, and running out of time.’’

Noting the nation’s serious economic problems, Obama said: ‘‘Yet instead of addressing these crises, Senator McCain’s campaign has announced that they plan to turn the page on the discussion about our economy and spend the final weeks of this campaign launching Swiftboat-style attacks on me.’’

Just months into his Senate career, in the late 1980s, McCain made what he has called ‘‘the worst mistake of my life.’’ He participated in two meetings with banking regulators on behalf of Keating, a friend, campaign contributor and S&L financier who was later convicted of securities fraud.

The Senate ethics committee investigated five senators’ relationships with Keating. It cited McCain for a lesser role than the others, but faulted his ‘‘poor judgment.’’

Also Sunday, Obama unveiled a TV ad on the economy that says McCain was ‘‘erratic in a crisis.’’ Some see that as a reminder of McCain’s age, 72.

The day’s events seemed to point to rising rhetorical heat in the campaign’s final month. McCain adviser Greg Strimple recently predicted ‘‘a very aggressive last 30 days’’ of the campaign.

‘‘We are looking forward to turning a page on this financial crisis and getting back to discussing Mr. Obama’s aggressively liberal record and how he will be too risky for Americans,’’ he said in a conference call with reporters.

So clearly McCain was gambling at the 101 level. He needs to bring it up to the 501 to start seeing some success.

What is there to learn? That the credit markets aren't good right now? Yes, I have learned that.

We need more xperts, that's for sure. Or at least we should replace the old xperts.

This farther proves that there are alot of racist things going on here. You just deleted my posts, but left you and your friends name calling. I thought you were an adult and you and your friends have carried on with your Xpert, 101, 501 and Credit jokes for a long time, but no deletes. I would think that at least KG would delete them as being fair, but clearly you run the message board as you like. So, since you do, then several other posters remarks about racist things going on here is very evident. You just proved it, by deleting my posts while leaving the others up. Still waiting on your deletion of your posts, Flac and JHig.

You sure you want to go there?

How about DJ's rules:

Changes to Community Standards Re: Harrassment and the Rep System

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note the changes made to the D-M.com Community Standards regarding harrassment and the reputation system (changes in bold):

Harassment -- Harassment occurs when a member insults, attacks, and denigrates another member at any time. Harassment also occurs when one member sends Reputation comments to another member after being placed on the receiving member's Ignore list. Even though we realize that sports discussions can get intense, we have zero tolerance for taking an argument about a sports topic to a personal level. For instance, the use of terms such as "idiot, moron, stupid" and other derogatory terms constitutes harassment. Harassment not only includes individuals but also can apply to insults against others teams, players and groups of Dallas-Mavs.com members. Repeated critical, condescending and/or sarcastic posts toward a forum member can also constitute harassment. The inclusion of board members usernames in ones signature constitutes harassment as well.

Such harrassment will NOT BE TOLERATED and those who violate this policy will receive warnings/strikes in accordance with our 4-Strike Policy. NO EXCEPTIONS!

I will name at least three right now: You, Flac and JHig!!! There you go, now you have it. It is all out in the open. I guarantee there are many here who would agree, and have been targeted by you three on posts. No matter what I or they post, you guys ALWAYS have something to say negative. It seems your jobs are to attack who you feel are Black posters or posters that seem to either NOT be white or from other countires. It is very clear. Too clear. Example today, is that I support Obama by posting a couple of threads against McCain, right after a couple of threads posted by KG supporting McCain, but I get attacked with the name calling and silly remarks about 101,Credit,501 an Xpert. Now, play dumb..

Let me take it a step father on the racist part. If any so called black poster or so called Mavs supporter says ANYTHING negative about a white player for the Mavs, then you get attacked and called names. But, if you talk badly all season long about one of the black Mavs players, you are rewarded with rep points or follow up posts agreeing. I know there are alot of posters here that would agree here as well. If someone wants to try it out, then let someone mention anything about Dirk. Try it! Now, go say something about Jet, Stack, Howard or Damp, and I guarantee you get rep or some brownie pts.

How is that name calling? Other than it being a former name of yours. So if you call me U2, can I say you are name calling also?

You are absolutely out of your mind. How was I supposed to even know that you were black? Maybe you've made reference to that fact at some point in the past, but I certainly never picked up on it.

The posts I make referencing the old CreditXpert jokes have nothing in any way to do with race.

let me understand, we're supposed to be affected in what way by the keating 5 scandal? the fact that it happened about 20 years ago, that mccain was shown to have very, very limited activity with keating, and the ethics committee basically slapped him on the wrist?

as the kind policeman says, "move along folks, there's nothing to see here.."

as for the craps game in vegas, mccain admitted he "is a betting man". as it is legal at the bellagio, so what?

now, if you want to ask does america want a risk taker in the office of the president, that is a fair question.

and if posters can't use sarcasm in our posts, it's going to get pretty dry around here....

And Obama said he enjoys a friendly game of poker.

Personally, I'd like to think that our leaders are real people and do things like a little gambling. I'd like to think President Bush enjoys a cold beer at a ball game, etc, etc...

I'd love to play craps with Senator McCain (even though I really don't know how) And I'd love to sit at the poker table with Senator Obama I think that old Hold 'em saying "beware the speech" might take on a whole new meaning.

Actually, you still dont know, but I guarantee you have a hunch on who is black on here. I guarantee it. Dont play dumb, I never said I was black or white, so why did you assume I was black? I wonder Yesterday another poster posted the same thing about the racist stuff going on her and he was not black, but when I did you assume I am black? Come on, man you guys need to stop of that. You guys just proved my point. Look at the title of this thread and what I posted to start this thread, and look at 95% of the posts in this thread and tell me how many is about my thread title? Perfect example of the selected attack methods used by some of the racist regime here.

Even when you are trying to show you are not at times racist, you prove my point again by putting a smily face right after Obama name, to try to prove you are not racist. To me, it is kinda like saying you love Black people, then name the number of black friends you have.

So McCain is somehow tied to the Keating and the S&L stuff of the 80's. Yet he got what amounted to a slap on the wrist and move on. This was over what I have read in these threads an issue that cost around 2 Billion Dollars.

Meanwhile, Obama has hired some key people to run the finances on his campaign...these same people are key people responsible for the recent collapse, that is only costing America some 700 Billion Dollars.

So let me get this straight, you have two losers running for office...one loses 2 Billion and the other loses 700 Billion...so which one is the expert on the economy?

I apologize upfront for what I am about to type.

I see nothing in Obama politically that qualifies him to be President. Saddly, it appears as though things are headed that way. In my eyes, Rush Limbaugh was correct when he made his comments about Donovan McNabb...the same can be said about Obama.

Of Course McNabb is a better QB than Obama is a potential President...I would rather compare Obama to QC!!!

Give me Powell or Rice as an African American for President...heck JC Watts...anything but OBAMA, who just may be worse for America than Clinton was...and that's saying a ton!!!

Wow...

I'd like to apologize to the mods - my "extreme" lengths to make a point in the "Hussein" thread might have been misconstrued by more than a few people...

I was making a point about what gets censored around here and what doesn't, but the person I was accusing of being a racist certainly was NOT one of the mods...

Sure, I'd like to see the racism banned from this site altogether, but we'd probably have to delete the entire Political Arena considering the weight that race is playing in this election...

To be fair though - you guys ARE getting personal with Silk right now and Silk is getting more than personal right back [Silk, they're not being "racist" just because they're picking on you...]

Let's keep the attacks leveled at the politicians, not the voters (because that's a pretty un-American thing to do, in my opinion...)

There's not really a whole lot of difference in what we've done here and "break the bank!" jokes. Somewhat personal sure.

But the accusation of racism.....good grief.

Yeah - that guy is a coke-head, not a mod...

(but he's certainly one of our resident racists...)

...but this thread isn't about racism, is it?

I agree somewhat, but I am not just talking about me on this racist issue. There are many forms of racism here on this message board. The personal attacks on me is very much personal and it happens all the time from the same EXACT people. And, it so happens that 3 are moderators now. And it so happens that there are several other racist type comments made by the same people. So, when I put two and two together it is not only personal, but it borders either racist or discrimination. So, now that I support a black candidate, the attacks have come back up, so I call it "Racist".

I'm locking the thread. If you want to accuse our board moderators of being racist, use PM's.

ETA: Furthermore, if anyone wants to take issue with, or ask a question about how the board is moderated, then please use this forum to post any concerns or questions you might have. Thanks.
