I'm voting #7, but that's with the hope that Cuban can get another superstar on this team and finally make Dirk our Robin... If that doesn't happen (and he stays healthy), I could definitely see him grabbing the #6 spot before his career is over.

It's hard to imagine him scoring less than 2174...considering he'll probably add another 320-350 this year.. That would mean that he'd only score 1854 points for the rest of his career after this season. Considering he'll be at about 1700 points this year, I suppose some of you are banking on a career ending injury sometime soon.

Sure, he'll slow down, but even if he drops off to 18 points next year and 15 the year after, that would still put him at 2795 for his career (averaging 75 games at 18 ppg next year and 15 the year after). That would put him up over 29000.. If he's over 29k, I don't see him retiring before passing 30k unless his wheels completely fall off.

I'm guessing he'll wind up 6th, but I'd love to see him sneak into the top 5.

I'm more interested in where he'll rank on the all time greatest list

I have him for sure top 30, with a chance to be a legit top 25 player of all time.

As of a couple of years ago, most already had him well ahead of the top 25 spot..

Most who? Most Mavs Fans? Most National Media? Most local media? Most advanced stats guys?

Bc I've never seen/heard Dirk mentioned as clearly or "well ahead" of the 25 all time by anyone that matters NOT connected to Dallas.

I actually saw a lot of people (not journalists, just people) nation-wide making an argument for Dirk to be considered top-20 when we won our ring back in 2011... That might have been a bit of a honeymoon effect, but this season's big bounce-back (All-Star!) and the fact that he'll end his career as a top-10 (6?) scorer should cement him in the top-20 all-time conversation for years to come (even with the next generation lurking).

Yeah I know for one, Mark Jackson put him somewhere around the top 15-20 players ever right as Game 6 was ending. I think JVG and Breen agreed, or at least didn't disagree. I didn't catch a lot of the other ESPN talking heads types, but I know that the advanced stat guys (Zach Lowe, BBref, and a couple of others) were all singing his praises after that Finals win. The smartest ones have continued to talk him up even though most in the mainstream kind of wrote him off after the lockout season (Chris Broussard: "It's embarrassing that Dirk came to training camp out of shape!" -- just your daily reminder that he is paid to analyze basketball for ESPN) and last year when he struggled with injuries.

Of the mainstream guys that make it onto TV relatively often, I've heard Simmons and Hubie Brown speaking Dirk's praises as an all-time great. I don't know if they really put him in any numbers ballpark but those whose opinions I value generally have Dirk right up there with the greats.

Barring major injury he should finish 6th.

After the finals, several "pundits" had him as a top 15-20 guy.

I'm curious who you'd have above him? There are only about 12 people who are just objectively better than dirk and then there are about 10-12 more that you can argue depending on preference.

And at least one of the guys who's generally ranked above him(dr j) is the most overrated player in the history of basketball.

FWIW, this is what Simmons wrote in March of 2012:

"In my basketball book [2010], I ranked Bird, Duncan, Havlicek, Baylor, Erving, Pettit, Malone and Barkley as the greatest forwards of all time (in that order). Dirk already leapfrogged the last three; he's about to jump the next three; and if that happens, suddenly he's one of the best 12 or 13 players of all time by any calculation."

And Mark Jackson at the end of G6: "“Dirk Nowitzki is one of the top 20 players to ever play this game.”

The problem is ranking dr j above Pettit Malone and Barkley kind of invalidates his credentials as a ranker.
