If you could send one sentence back to yourself when you were 13
what would it be?
mine would be "tell art not to fly his plane when the weather is bad"
family friend, art, married another family friend. he flew planes and was killed in oregon when his plane went down. we found out later than his wife was pregnant with their first child, (the most adorable little girl ever ) they would have been the perfect family
not all of these have to be sad though

When you get to high school and college, don't even think about 'dating; "enjoy" women real hard because it will come easier at this age than it will at any other point in your life.
Of course, that would be a 2nd option.
First option would be:
Tell your oldest brother to have a colonoscopy every year.

If being 12 could count, I'd say: "Better put Challenger back in the bay till we get it figured out."
Then again, I was close to 30 when the great Columbia broke up over the North Texas skies, so maybe it's neither here nor there.

Some options (I was 13 in 1995):
1. Stock tips. Buy this stock on this date....probably would be a run-on sentence.
2. Give Cubes some advice on running the team. Who to draft etc.
3. Tell myself to find a girl who I know will be hot in the future...to invest in now.

^That's a horrible sentence to send, Sike.
I'd tell myself not to study so hard during high school and study way the heck harder during college.

Oh let's see...
"Tell Dad to get a CT scan on his shoulder."
"When you're 22, don't let your best friend/roommate start playing online poker and gambling on sports."
"The next 13 super bowl winners are..."
...Something along those lines.

funny how most either want to save a life (admirable) or get rich (questionable)....we swing from being heroic to selfish pretty easily.

If I had someone I could have saved I would have gone there. So I went with something I know would be valuable information.

This is a good question. For me, its not easily answered.
I have two family members that died of accidental deaths - and quite honestly, I don't think I'd be able to prevent either one of them. I'd couldn't tell my dad to not go fishing, and I couldn't tell my brother to not be an addict. That would just put my 13 year old self on a futile quest that would ultimately force me to face more guilt than I already do.
I don't think an investment or gambling tip would help. I had no money, and the parents were fairly broke....and its not like I'd be able to convince anyone that I had legitimate information - so that's out.
I think I would tell myself "Don't take the job at April Airconditioning."
Trust me, it would've made a difference.

for the record I wasn't being critical of anyone...I'm pretty sure I'd lean to one of these options as well.
but I think that speaks to a life well lived.
Time Travel of course throws a devastating monkey wrench into the cog of my leanings toward Divine certainty...
...but I just remembered a friend of my Mother who lost 4 of her 5 children and her Father all in the same day in a hydroplaning accident. I think I would myself a warning for her.

But if you change anything, you lose everything from that point on...
If I altered ANYTHING about my life at 13-years-old, I wouldn't be living with the most wonderful woman I've ever met (and losing my true love would suck more than anything I've lost in the past...)
Plus, what if you save a loved one's life from cancer, only for them to die a month later in a hydroplaning accident and kill 4 out of 5 of a woman's children and her father all in the same day?
You'd do more good by using the knowledge of past regrets to help people NOW than you would trying to change the past...

UD...the simple fact of that lady having her children and Father wouldn't have changed my life one iota. I would have still gone to the same school and met the same hot Brazilian married her, became a pastor, etc, etc...
this isn't that cheesy movie "Final Destination" we're talking about here.
It is of course true that by saving a family member you have no clue what the repercussions would be for them...but that isn't the point. The point is that you would have spared them from something you deemed as terrible. Who knows whats to come after?

That whole butterfly effect thing is tricky. If I went back to give myself obvious advice, like buy stock in Borland and Lotus Notes, Bill Gates' Microsoft would take over the world. And as soon as I said, lay it all on Brad and Jenn to last a lifetime, Pitt would go running off with someone like Angelina Jolie or something.
Crap! See what I mean!

Some of you are kinda un-American. I'd probably do something to try and stop 9-11 from happening. Obviously, I'd probably need a run-on sentence to take back to the age of 13..
something like:
On 9-11-01, the US will be attacked by terrorists that take over flights mid flight and they crash them into the world trade center and the pentagon and somewhere else that I can't currently remember and it's Al-Qaeda (sp?) related and lots of people will die and the towers will fall and sports will get cancelled and Norm will want sports to start back as soon as possible and country music will advocate putting a boot in their ass.
ya know..something like that.

i went completely in a different direction, try and hook up with girls. All of them. I realize that may sound selfish, but in reality..I'm giving out pleasure..so it's different, it's not selfish at all, in fact...it's....generous.

Yeah, but as a practical matter, what could a 13 year old Murph have done with that information?

Well, my best friend's dad turned out to be extremely high in FEMA. One of his brother's ended up becoming an FBI agent..
So, I'm not sure what I could have done with it..but at least I knew some of the right people to talk to ...kinda.

A few options...
Don't be unconditionally nice to women.
Workout at least 3 times a week.
Join a frat when you get to college, no matter how lame it might seem to you at the time.
A few more years of school and you'll do what you should be doing so go to law school no matter the consequences.
But I'm almost positive I'd tell myself...
Don't let your 10 year old sister spend the night with "Sally Smith" whose older brother will rape her, only for you to find out 10 years later.

I’m with Mary. Any messages I sent back would be futile…
especially considering kids are subject to adults’ bad decisions, and God’s lack of intervention.
I guess I could’ve sent back “you’ll live through this”, but at the time I would’ve preferred to not live.
But I’ve always thought “at least I wasn’t raped”, so I have that to be grateful for. So maybe God did intervene.
In a dream world, I would’ve sent back “Go to college now!”. But who am I kidding? LOL.
