Official Summer League thread
Lottery pick, and Yogi, Noel, and maybe other core guys. Could be an interesting time.

I knew Ferrell, Finney-Smith, Hammons, and Brussino were going to be on the team, but Noel is news to me... Sounds like he's pretty much committed to signing with Dallas this summer.

Surprised to see Noel as well. Bodes well for him wanting to stay in dallas and it will be good for him to get more familiar with our system.

I might have misspoken on Noel. I thought I read that Noel wanted to. Remarked then that it was a good sign about both his work ethic and investment. Can't find the article now.

Summer League starts right around free agency, right? I would think he'd want his (guaran-damn-teed) contract signed before playing.

June 22 - Draft
July 1 - we can talk with free agents (although we can talk with Noel since he's currently under contract until July 6)
July 6 - he can sign a new contract (not extension)
July 7 - Summer League begins
July 8 - our first summer league game
That two weeks starting next Thursday is going to be nuts.

Assuming Brussino, DFS, Hammons and Uthoff will be playing as well.
I'm probably being too optimistic but I have a feeling Uthoff might actually turn into a decent player.

I don't think it's a stretch to say decent. I agree.
I'm hoping DFS keeps improving and takes a nice step this coming season. That would help a ton.

6'10 Belgian center Ismael Bako warrants mention here for his play today. Scoring 11 points while pulling down 7 rebounds and blocking 4 shots in the last game of the day against the USA Select Team, Bako was a force inside. An impressive run-jump athlete who can protect the rim with his 7'2.5 wingspan and 9'3 1/2 standing reach, Bako lacks much in the way of skill and feel, but his energy, lob catching, and ability to switch defensively give him some upside. Seeing significant rotation minutes for the first time this season for Leuven in the Belgian First Division, Bako averaged 8 points and 4.1 rebounds over 20.1 minutes per game. Automatically eligible for the 2017 NBA draft as a 1995-born prospect, Bako did himself quite a few favors with his play today. - Source: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Ismael-Bako-52659/

Damn, the Knicks fans some salty ass mofos. They are unnecessarily trashing Smith Jr like nobody's business and hoping for a summer league slaughter of Smith? Wow.

You're thinking of Robillion, who posted the other day during the draft -- he lives in San Fran, the guy from the Knicks forum lives in NYC... Different people.
Also, Knicks fans are delusional -- they're gonna absolutely HATE waiting 3-4 years for Frank to develop (if he ever does).

Yeah I thought the name was off a bit but wasn't sure.
But the hate makes no sense. The Mavs didn't sign some FA they were after or anything. They just drafted a guy after their pick. Just makes 0 sense to trash a guy like that for no reason. Nobody on here is trashing Frank because there is no reason to. At all.
In fact, I read an article where DSJ really liked the idea of playing for the Knicks. Karma is a bitch.

Knicks fans are just insecure because their shitty franchise is on the verge of becoming much, much worse.
Seriously, look at the way they're behaving over a possible SUMMER LEAGUE matchup... It's pathetic.

@ShamsCharania: Sources: Undrafted Baylor forward Johnathan Motley has agreed to a two-way NBA contract with the Dallas Mavericks
[note: 2-way contract means he's signed on for the D-League, with an option to extend through the season]

Nice. I was reading up on him the other day. Sounds like a solid prospect with some tools to work with.

Didn't even know about 2 way contracts till you posted that, they are new to this CBA. So essentially it gives us a 16th and 17th roster spot that in a pinch when needed we can sort of "call up" the player and then send him back as needed. And these players contracts cannot be purchased by other teams, so for Motley if he lights it up with the Legends, for example, no team can just purchase his contract and bring him up like with other d league signings. We can do this for a total of 45 days, once he reaches 45 days spent with the NBA club he must be signed to a NBA roster or released. Until the 45 days have been met he is safe and secure as a Dallas Maverick.
At least that is how I understood it. This would have been great for some of those high upside guys that need time like Ndour and stuff. And I think undrafted free agency and the summer league process is now that much more important with contracts like these.

Yeah, I made that note because I just learned what they are too -- someone asked Shams about it after that tweet and he was kind enough to explain.

@Boweman55: someone who watches college basketball tell me why motley is awesome
@dirkfan87: He was bananas in the tournament. That's all I remember like 6 blocks in the game. Very active.
@kg_veteran: He was the best PF in college basketball and can play either forward spot and small ball C in the pros...for starters.
[god, I wish KG still posted here -- his knowledge is wasted in 140 characters-or-less]

More on Motley:
The Dallas Mavericks got another steal out of the 2017 draft class after signing undrafted forward, Johnathan Motley out of Baylor.

I am ridiculously excited for Motley. At one point I remember Finley scouting him for a couple of games. Was afraid that the lack of a second round pick would have let him escape. Glad we have at least an in with him for SL

By signing a two-way contract with the Dallas Mavericks, Motley will spend the majority of the season with the Texas Legends, but will be able to go back-and-forth to the Mavericks for up to 45 days. This stops any other team from around the league from snatching him up out of the D-League.

Maybe I'm missing something but JM sounds like an Aminu clone.
Didn't realize the guy has a 7'4" ws and is considered a quick leaper which usually is conducive to great rebounding and defense....Rodman and Marion come to mind as examples of quick leapers.
I'm pretty damn excited about that signing.

Looks like a lite version of McDyess to me. Substitute some explosion for length. Both good on the offensive glass not great on defensive glass. Both have/had defensive upside. He won't touch McDyess's Denver days imo but his Detroit days? 8-10 points, 7 boards- and half of those being offensive, and being at least sound defensively with some shot blocking upside. From a rotation player if he was that I'd be happy.

Bigger/more inside. Not terrible similar in terms of game. Both had decent mid-range game. Both thin and agile with good foot speed. Neither one particularly skilled at shooting the three, but both had/have a decent mid-range jumper.
Wingspan
Aminu - 7'0"
Motley - 7'4"
3pt shooting
Aminu - 17.9%
Motley - 25.8%
Overall 2pt%
Aminu - 45.1%
Motley - 53.7% (but far more interior shots like hooks, layups, and dunks)

Interestingly, cap guru Larry Coon is calling this the "Yogi Ferrell rule" -- I guess he actually had the same deal last year.

I haven't heard of any of these guys except for Satnam and Motley... Is this basically our D-League team?
