Default Trade Deadline Rumors

The Mavs are notorious for keeping trade rumors quiet until it actually happens, but the deadline is fast approaching and speculating is heating up. Both the Start-Telegram and USA Today says DWill could be heading to Cleveland for Shumpert.

I like Shumpert but we are we also overloaded at the 2/3 positions, so maybe a three-way trade or someone else for a 4/5 guy?

And the deadline is Thursday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m ET in case you were wondering.

I liked young Shumpert. Now, I do not know. I think he would make Simba expendable and gone, but it is still hard to see perfect fit.

I also find it hard to believe that Cavs would go for it. Trading decent Shumpert for half a season rental? Mavs do not have bird years on DWill, which means that he would have to re-sign for Cavs on vets minimum. It is also trading a guard for guard. If they only need passing, then there are still free PG options that they have not handed 10-day contracts to.

Shumpert makes little sense. We already have two of his in the making in Anderson and DFS.

I don't see much benefit for us if any unless we get a future #1 somehow which I don't see Cleveland doing.

Like someone said, a 3-way deal would make more sense for us.
I guess it depends on whether we can sign someone of Shumpert's caliber in the off-season or not. He is only 26 and a decent player so maybe it wouldn't be such a bad deal for us.

I'd be okay with a second rounder.

Things we want
First rounders
Second rounders
A decent starting/backup center
PG
Relief from Powell's contract (?)
Backup PF?

Things we can offer
Cash - 3 million once per season
first rounders - 2017 and 2019
Second rounders - 2017, 2018, 2019
Young talent - (Curry, Anderson, DFS, etc., but not sure why we'd do it)

Current roster/depth-chart with years remaining in parentheses
Dirk (TO)/Bogut (UFA)/Mejri (TO)/Hammons (2+)
Barnes (2+)/Powell (2+)
Matthews (2)/DFS (2+)/Anderson (1+)/Brussino (TO)
Curry (1)/Harris (TO)/
Deron (exp)/Barea (2)

Positional needs
Center - Dirk has finally found his groove at center, so he may return. Bogut and Mejri are potentially hitting free agency. Hammons has shown very little.
Power Forward - Barnes has shown that he's both best at PF and capable of playing 40mpg at power forward spot. Powell is a PF/C with a long contract
Small Forward - Matthews has finally found his game and keeps improving. DFS has shown himself to be a quality backup. Anderson has shown good potential. All have at least one more season, Brussino is developing well but can't be depended on yet.
Shooting Guard - Curry has come to life as a starting SG and has good health. Harris has held it down as a reserve, but he's team option. Matthews can fill in occasionally.
Point Guard - Deron is expiring. Barea is coming back but his health is proving to be an issue. Ferrell may be under contract if the 2-year offer are to be believed. It's also the strongest PG draft in a decade.

Priorities
1) Center
2) PG (although easier to fill)
3) SG (specifically backup)
4) PF - backup PF might not be a bad idea, but this is a distant 4th
5) SF isn't even a need

We dont need Shumpert and his is pretty overpaid. Cavs dont have a 1st to give, so there goes this trade

Agree with that priority list.

1 and 2 will be dictated by the draft unless we make some type of trade before the deadline. I'm guessing we'll go PG in draft if one of the top are available or go big with someone like Markkanen if the PGs are gone.

If a PG is drafted we'll most likely have to make a trade for a Center.

If a Center is drafted we'll most likely resign DWill and pick up the TO on Harris.

Backup SG can probably be addressed in FA, with our 2nd pick, minor trade, or simply pick up the TO on Harris. Barea and Harris are more than capable in that role and I'd say DWill can play there too along with Wes and Anderson on occasion.

Backup PF will not be needed if we get a legit center. If Dirk is our primary center again next season we'll obviously need to address backup PF but I think DFS will play some at that position going forward too. We should be able to find a backup PF off the scrap pile somewhere.

Agree, #5 isn't even needed. If the BPA when we pick is a SF I could see Donnie trading down to gain more assets.

A nice defensive, rebounding center would help the team quite a bit. But it's not even close to the need of a high quality, intelligent PG that can create for himself and also for the rest of the team. Look at what a D-league, undrafted PG has done for the team in just a few games. All while the chances of getting Fultz continue to slide.

I do not get that trade at all. At first I thought oh nice, Kidd is adding 3point big to the roster. Actually, Hawes has been pretty bad this season from three.

There are no draft picks involved. Looks like Kidd was able to work some kind of magic because Plumlee actually has a rather bad contract. He is earning 12,5M for each of 4 seasons while he averaged 9.7 minutes a game in Milwaukee. Kidd has a weird habit of paying bigs over 10 mil a year and averaging them under 20 minutes a game. I do not expect Hawes and Hibbert to be treated any other way.

Hawes is in Milwaukee to simply spread the floor. If his shot does not improve, he will be warming the bench like Hibbert, who simply is a salary filler and may be released/bought out after trade deadline. When it comes to Miles Plumlee, I guess Hornets are taking a prayer there. No idea why they did not demand even one 2nd round draft pick with him. Really, no idea, what Hornets are trying to accomplish in the NBA.

Charlotte blew things up because they did not like where they were, simply making playoffs but not moving forward. Well, they blew things up and ended up being in the same place before they blew things up. Sure, they are stuck in a LeBron era, but they are still borderline playoff team in weaker Eastern Conference.

Hopefully anyone here can explain me why Hornets agreed to that deal.

I am also sad that Mavs had no chance to jump that deal. Hawes and Hibbert for Bogut would have been nice, although that would have made team's playoff chances better.

Wonder what some of you might think about Bogut/Harris for Monroe?

Bogut back to his old team and Devin goes home.
Monroe might not be the greatest fit but he is big, can rebound, can score and is only 26.
His numbers seem to be down this season from his average for some reason and obviously won't give us much D so not sure if we'd want to bother.

Works salary wise.

That feels like a lot to give up for a bench player and that's really what he is on a decent team. Bogut is potentially a starter for almost any team, at least with limited minutes. So a straight up Bogut for Monroe maybe because for what we are getting, Monroe is overpaid still so consider this Bogut+salary relief.

Epic fail if Bogut is still on this team past the deadline.

Cuban keeps tight lips on rumors. When we have them, trades don't happen. Can't think of a time when rumors spilled before a successful trade.

But seriously, there may not be offers with positive assets out there for Bogut. We may have to pay to dump Bogut, which we shouldn't do.

So 9 years ago? Also seems like it leaked out of NY media a full 12 hours before Dallas covered it. NY sports media are unscrupulous and have no problem leaking even the least substantiated rumors. Hard to keep anything secret there.

Point taken, though.

Pistons Have Solicited Trade Offers For Andre Drummond, Reggie Jackson

Feb 15, 2017 10:49 AM

The Detroit Pistons have been quietly exploring trade scenarios involving Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson.

Despite both being young, talented and under team control for several seasons, the Pistons were disappointed with the potential return.

Drummond is unlikely to be dealt at the deadline.

Jackson could still be traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Orlando Magic, New Orleans Pelicans, or some mystery destination.

Any chance we could be the mystery destination?

Really like this idea
Festus & 2017 1st & Noah vonleh
For
Bogut & future 2nd.

Especially if the Mavs can cut Ezeli before next year and pay him only the $1 mil guarantee. I'd like to see him play, but the injury situation is scary.
Then the Mavs would come away with another quality pick, and another young big body. (bench)
I don't know how much the future salary would hinder any plans though.

Andrew Bogut conversations expected if Celtics fail to make bigger moves:

As an elite rebounder and defender on an expiring contract, the Dallas Mavericks center checks off a number of boxes that could interest the Celtics. Making the 32-year-old one of the more obvious targets, the size of Bogut's contract ($11 million) would allow for a simple swap of Tyler Zeller or Amir Johnson plus some sort of draft consideration for the Mavericks. Despite the fact Bogut would likely be a rental, he wouldn't cost anyone on a guaranteed contract beyond this season.

In a trade deadline piece earlier this week, the Boston Herald's Steve Bulpett wrote, "The Celtics would most likely welcome Andrew Bogut from Dallas, even though he is on the last year of his deal, but again, cost is the issue."

DallasBasketball.com's Mike Fisher added this Monday night:

NBA source tells me #Celtics & #Mavs expect to talk Bogut trade - dependent on what bigger move Boston can make.
