Harrison Barnes
I guess this should finally get its own thread since there's another Barnes to talk about in the general rumors thread...
Mavs offer Harrison Barnes 4-year, $95M contract

I don't get how a 1% chance at Barnes for $22m is a better idea than a 100% chance at Parsons for $22m, unless Parsons' knees are toast... Because injuries aside, Parsons is the better player. I like Barnes' versatility, but he's just not worth 25% of the cap.

I wanted Parsons too. My thought was Parsons brings Howard, and that combo might be enough to make a run or at least provide an illusion of contention. But then for some reason we went all in for Whiteside? Never made sense to me.

EDIT: or not... @haralabob: Has nothing to do with Brown.

I thought he followed that up by saying it has nothing to do with MIke Brown? I'm bad at Twitter games so who knows.

As far as the direction of conversation you brought up Underdog, I can't disagree. Going into FA I would of easily agreed that Parsons > Barnes. Especially when considering that Parsons could of helped attract at least ONE quality addition to the team.
I always thought overpaying Parsons made sense unless the Mavs really felt uncomfortable with his health. But after whiffing on whatever joke of a plan they had conceived, I do like the idea of at least attempting to go for Barnes. I love his age, upside, and he fits the need now (trying to pretend to win for Dirk's last few years?) and the future (24 etc.).

This was my thinking too. Like already stated, unless the Mavs think Parsons knee is going to explode at any time I don't really understand their plan. Still don't understand why Parsons told other people to take less money (Wes) to play here, but when he's asked to do it he gets butt hurt and turns his back on us.

The only way this halfway works out is if Parsons knees combust and he's out a good 15+ games again. Even then, he wouldve brought Conley or Howard with him soooo.

I agree about Parsons bringing Howard, but the Mavs hate Howard. Must be butt sore from him choosing Houston over them...(which you almost can't blame them in a way)

Yep...which was hilarious because Dwight hated it there and it was constant chaos in the locker room. He would have easily gotten as many touches as he desired in Dallas.

As much as we consider our FA woes a complete disaster these last 5 years, I'm fairly sure we are placing a curse on each FA that chooses another location. I sleep well at night knowing this.

@ESPNSteinLine: If Kevin Durant indeed chooses Golden State in free agency, sources say Dallas plans to go ahead with its Harrison Barnes max offer sheet.
So it sounds like this is 100% contingent on Durant going to GS because the Warriors intend to match any offer for Barnes otherwise... Nothing we haven't already assumed, but now t's confirmed by Stein.

I know this is a stupid question, but is it not possible that Durant could go to GS and another team might come into the fold for Barnes too?

Not a stupid question, absolutely possible... Probably nobody else has said anything public because they're not a desperate to pacify season ticket holders. Cuban is running damage control with this Barnes gamble.

This is a gamble because he hasn't proven to be a number 1 or 2 option and at a max deal he better be for us.
I guess I can live with it though because he just turned 24 and still has an upside considering he was on a team with 3 players at or near superstar status.
Huge unknown as to whether he can play at an allstar level so it is a huge gamble.

Wouldn't it be just hilarious if Barnes accepted the Sixer's max offer as they reported they were going to give him? That would be just a fine offseason.

This has pretty much been what I have been terrified of. I had hoped I was just being silly and it was us or GS but realistically other teams will put in offers if Durant is indeed going to GS. And based on how EVERY **** THING has gone so far.. yeah.

That awkward moment when people say Parsons is the better player when Barnes has helped his team get to the finals twice and make the team USA roster. While Parsons just floated his way through then collapsing once playoffs hit not even able to get on a team USA roster.

It would be a pleasure to go back and forth with you debating the merits of your broken perspective. Unfortunately I think I am not up to the challenge today
P.S. Trent Dilfer was a much better QB than Dan Marino. No doubt.

I'm sorry but this is just silly. Your talking about the 4th option on a team that broke the regular season record and comparing it to a guy on a team we all admit daily has been a patchwork job since 2011. Then you are drawing a conclusion based on their team's success and not the role/impact each player had. Barnes could be better than Parsons, I don't think he is right now this moment but he could be. But because his team won 73 games and went to the finals he's better than Parsons? Bogut helped his team get to the finals, Anthony Davis was hurt and didn't make the playoffs. I guess Bogut is better than Anthony Davis also?

Being able to bring in Barnes to the Mavs system. I think there is lots of potential offensively. Rebounding can go up depending on the center. I'm also thinking big picture because if we do end up lottery pick. We draft the best big man out there to plug in with Barnes and Anderson.

Durant had a conversation with Jerry West yesterday, that guy is like the GOAT recruiter. Durant very well may end up in GS and Barnes in Dallas (ugh). We'll know by tomorrow.

I would really love to know what was the reason for the goodbye to Parsons.
His health/knee issue and the Mavs were tired of him sitting out two years in a row or if it was his attitude (fuck the Mavs FA, im a max guy). After Dirk giving up money to sign him to his max (with almost everyone yelling overpaid), him being part of the Wes/Jordan pitch asking Wes to take less for the best of the team blabla and then being completly selfish coming into his own free agency...
Probably a mix of both but my money is more on the second reason

Parsons just looked good at the right time I mean with Barnes I already knew he's done something good enough to be the 7th pick out of UNC and getting better each season helping his team get to the finals twice. With Barnes I always thought he's that player you can build around all star players.

I never got the idea Parsons wanted to be here any longer.
Not only that but we are coming off 2 years in a row of knee surgery. I personally can't stand behind the guy underachieving here and getting a RAISE to do it.
IMO, Barnes and Parsons are the same caliber of player. But to Barnes' credit, he at least has post season success behind him. People forget that run he had his rookie year in the post season. He's shown flashes that with potentially with a expanded role he may be able to be a legit #2 or #1 in this league. Or on this team anyway.

I think we will know if Barnes stays with the Warriors by tomorrow. Barnes to Dallas is not a forgone conclusion.

I'm trying to understand this as well.
Barnes has also been relatively healthy and is younger.

I always sensed there was some tension there between Carlisle and Parsons as well.

I wonder how Wes feels about this situation. Parsons tells him to take less and then he bolts.

Me too actually. Even in games where Parsons played well and we lost. RC would for some odd reason call him out to the media and point to his +- number. I can't recall RC doing that with really anyone else and it was not an isolated incident.
Then again I also think Tmac had a thing for Parsons as it seemed almost every question he had was about Parsons and RC probably was a little sick of the man crush. Idk.

I need clarification on the Parsons issue did Parsons expect to be the Mavs #1 free agent signing and as soon as he wasn't he was gone? Or was there never going to be a max offer even now after most of the major names agreed elsewhere?

Apparently there was never going to be a max offer, the Mavs valued him in the 16-18 range.

Interesting, so they value Harrison Barnes more than Parsos I guess.
