And the speeches tonight are going to be great drama. Will McCain (don't know if we will hear from Palin) be gracious in conceding defeat? Will Obama congratulate McCain on the campaign he ran?

Yes, I think both will be gracious.

Yeah, both of the dudes seem to be good enough on a personal level to give props to the other in their speeches. Plus, as much as McCain has been saying he was poised for a comeback, this result can't really be a surprise to him.

Oh no, McCain can't win. If VA, NC, FL, IN or OH went democrat, just any one of those states, McCain was going to lose.
When McCain lost PA, it was very bad for him and when he lost OH, the race was over. Now it is just how bad he gets beat.

Looks like Obama just might win IN after all. Crazy. Looks like he might lose NC. I think he will win VA fairly handily.
FL is tightening, and TX is starting to run away for McCain.

NC is so close.
VA so so close.
FL is staying around 3% Obama up, very close but the polls so far in FL was on in FL.
MO, McCain has small lead
IN McCain small lead.

WA and OR are on par with California in terms of liberal-ness. With those 18 in the bag as well, that's game for Obama. He's polishing off his victory speech as we post.

Ground game for Obama was brilliant. They kept on going to early votting states and Obama hammered his message across. Early votting states and getting the vote out, hurt the republicans.

What is striking me right now is how uncannily accurate the pre-election polls are looking to be.
EDIT: Oh, and the ass kicking in PA. If that keeps up, something very unusual happened in that state.

I figured McCains people was hyping PA but some polls did close in PA. Not all of them. One poll company was called Mason/Dixon and i noticed they favored McCain and would put McCain up or very close, differ from most other polls.
After Obama locked up IA, NM and NH, McCain had to win two blue states. Sarah Palin killed him. He could not win a blue state with her. With her he had no chance in MI, WI, MN, and it even killed him in OH. He couldn't win PA with her. With Romney, he had a shot at those states.
I agree, it will be good to watch the margin on the PA win, to see how it turns out. To the end, McCain stopped in NM, NH and PA, trying to turn some of these blue.

Dallas County is more than halfway in, and it's 58 to 41 Obama. Wow, did I ever underestimate the Obama support around here. My gut told me it was pretty large...but not this large.

That's a good point. In what states did Palin ultimately help? None, it would seem. None. Let me say that again. NONE.
Romney would have helped in MI, and may have helped in OH and PA.
Then again, it was probably a lost cause anyway.

Congratulations to Obama, and congratulations to all of his supporters. Obama ran the (far) better campaign, and it appears that the vote tallies are reflecting that.

I agree Chum, i think it was a lost cause but where Obama got Biden to help him in PA and up in the north east, Palin was a weight around McCains neck. Romney would help some but i am like you, probably was a lost cause anyway.
I just heard in FL, the republicans and McCain people put robo calls into the Cuban community around Miami and south FL, saying Fidel endorses Obama and again trying to scare them. They say it hasn't worked as the attacks hasn't worked this time around. They did this in the last few days trying to secure FL.

I thought McCain's campaign was entirely distasteful. But then again, politics is a tough game and you have to have thick skin to play it. In that regard, I think you have to look at the robocall tactics and such as just being the best chance for success given the circumstances.
In retrospect, the biggest blunder of McCain's campaign (besides the way that the campaign was outworked at every turn on the ground) was ceding the "experience" argument by choosing Palin. Palin absolutely dominated the news for the last couple months, but not in a way that was negative for Obama. I think you would have to call it, in retrospect, a "vanity pick." Yeah, it shone the light on the McCain ticket...but that light was not altogether favorable.
That points to the other blunder in this election season. The Republicans nominated a sorry candidate. I've said it before, and I will say it again. John McCain is a loser. I really don't mean that an insult to him. It just is what it is.
There had to be SOMEONE in the GOP who would have outperformed McCain, and by a good margin. The GOP is getting exactly what it deserves tonight.

the winner of this campaign is facing a load of issues to resolve. it looks pretty certain that it will obama, and he will show us early on just what type of administartion he will have.
look for who he selects early on as the transition team for the clues.
he really has a similar problem that clinton had in 92...keeping his own party in line. the house will try to reach and it will be important for obama's administration to keep them from screwing things up.
the key will be fiscal discipline. I know the republicans around here will laugh at that comment, but it will prove to be the issue that will either allow for a republican resurgence in 2010 or if the democrat majority will be returned. if obama can hold the line on spending, the democrat majority will be here for awhile.
one thing is for certain. this is a very, very smart man who has an ability to dive into issues and focus on solutions. I expect he will surprise a lot of people with his pragmatism, when many expect a strict dogmatic style instead.

So pretty much official in my book.

Indeed. This is the matter that was, I think, lost on Republican partisans who nitpicked him to death on things like Ayers and Wright.

If you and Mavdog are right about Obama in this respect, I will be happy to concede the point.
When Clinton came into power in 1992, he didn't initially try to govern from the center, and then 1994 happened, and he changed his ways. I'll be very curious to see how things go with Obama.

I have to admit...the scene on CNN right now, with the election being called and reaction in Chicago, is pretty moving. What I hope Republican partisans can take from this is the extraordinary, extraordinary history that was made tonight...and at least find some reason for hope going forward. What a moment for our nation.
Even if he fails miserably, what a moment for our nation. This is why I supported him from the beginning.
