Congrats Avery
Fastest ever to 100 NBA wins as a coach.
100-31.
You still drive me crazy sometimes, but I figure that is just you working the Nellie out of yourself. Congrats on 100 wins.

An appropriate thread. Johnson beating the likes of Auerbach, Phil Jackson, Riley, etc. to get 100 wins the fastest is really darn impressive.
Congrats, General.

I have a ton of respect for Avery. Taking over a really good team is NOT an automatic recipe for success. Ask Flip Saunders.

I love Avery so it's awesome to see him breaking records held by some pretty darn good coaches. Congratulations, Avery.

When you consider that Phil Jackson got on this list by taking over the Bulls with Michael Jordan, and Pat Riley got on ot by taking over a Lakers team with Magic and Kareem, it makes Avery's accomplishment all the more impressive. I wonder if Aurbach's Celtics already had Bill Russell?

Exactly.

No, but they had Hall of Famers Bob Cousy and Ed Macauley. And, oh yeah, the original "Rifleman" -- Chuck Cooper.

Congrats to The Little General.
My favorite photograph--the 1999 Spurs team that won their first NBA Title. The photo--the Little General taking that shot that killed the Knicks.
THat shot==wow--huge shot from a man that has the hugest heart in the NBA. He came from a large family in New Orleans. Born into abject poverty.
Considered to be too slow and not gifted enough.
He and David Robinson were close--he and David Robinson were men of Christ, giving their lives to Jesus Christ--and each continuing to this day having a remarkable life off the basketball floor, with AJ continuing to minister to folks here in San Antonio.
If you ever knew poverty, you would know AJ.
If you ever knew defeat, you would know AJ.
If you ever knew coming back after defeat and despair--believing in yourself, in your team, in God--you would know AJ.
God bless you, Little General. I look forward to the day when the Spurs retire your jersey. I hope they do so in Dallas as well.

Avery is doing a tremendous job and I believe he has the stuff to be the greatest coach in NBA history. Time will tell, but I won't be surprised if he has won multiple championships within the next 5-7 years. Congratulations Avery Johnson you are a super coach.

Feel the same way about Riley? Phil Jackson? Etc?
You don't get to have it both ways. His numbers are clear.

Avery Johnson, the best new coach to ever grace the NBA.
SCOREBOARD! says so.

AJ has so many intangibles.
Yes--he did get a very talented team.
SO did Flip Saunders, as someone already pointed out.
As a rookie Head Coach--he went farther into the playoffs than did Saunders.
And but for the most lop-sided, miserable officiating in the history of the NBA, the Mavs would be trying to repeat this year as opposed to simply getting back to the finals.
AJ is a teacher--he used to do this while he was a player.
He knows how to get the best out of his players--he relates to them.
He is a man of God. When he comes back into town, he touches base with a group of ministers, one of whom I know myself personally.
He does things for people that never gets publicized. He is humble. He remembers his roots.
I don't know how to print pictures in these web pages, or I would print that last shot he made against the Knicks that secured the game and the first NBA title for the Spurs. That kind of leadership will lead the Mavs to an NBA title someday.

I'm just saying it's early to call him the best coach ever. It's not like he turned the New York Knicks into the San Antonio Spurs. He turned the Phoenix Suns into the San Antonio Spurs.

Mr. Kahn has a little bit to say about our AJ.
http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/6326616#8
Quote:
8. Item: The Dallas Mavericks went to Denver Sunday night and escaped the wind, snow and ire of the Nuggets for a four-point win for coach Avery Johnson's 100th victory in his first 131 games. That is the best start for a coach in NBA history – getting there four games faster than legendary Red Auerbach.
What this really means: As if their 12-game winning streak that stretched through November to Dec. 1 wasn't impressive enough, the Mavericks extended their present run to 10 games at the Pepsi Center. More striking is the simple fact they did it with Dirk Nowitzki home and ailing with a sinus infection. Clearly, Josh Howard is working his way back into the dominating impact-style that made him one of the bright young stars last year.
But at this particular time of the season, this is about Johnson, who has lifted this franchise from having peaked at a tad below the elite level with Don Nelson, and now will be considered challengers to win the NBA title over the next few years at least. Most of the attention has centered on how much Johnson has lifted the defensive intensity. That's part of it. But he's also given them an energy and focus that has put them in a different category. And that brings a word of warning to the rest of the league. From a 1-6 mark to the NBA-best 24-7 they took into Monday's games, they're just getting started.
|
Let's get this started....ed...
I also kind of like the way the mavs are portrayed as a team of warriors and not as side-kicks to some prima-donna NBA-juiced up player.

And a pretty nice mavs page at sportsillustrated.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/bas...ams/mavericks/
Unfortunately they captured Anthony Johnson in his normal state......plodding.
