Default Terry Stotts to Blazers HC

Per Jason Quick of the Oregonian.

Tough loss for the Mavs a year after losing Casey, but this is the price of success.

Mavs must be doing something right if they can't hold onto their assistant coaches year after year...

Hate to say it, but I'm not really upset about it. I'd like to see some new ideas/plays thrown into the offense.

With that said, definite congrats to him and best of luck.

its a combination of Carlisle being an excellent coach and making others look better (the Nash effect) and the Mavericks making quality personnel choices.

Rick Carlisle on Terry Stotts: 'Great hire'
By: TimMacMahon ESPN
http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/maver...tts-great-hire

Rick Carlisle expected to lose the top two assistants off his championship staff. It's happened in a little more than one year.

The Trail Blazers hired Terry Stotts, who served as the Mavs' offensive coordinator since Carlisle arrived in Dallas. Ex-Mavs defenisive coordinator Dwane Casey was hired as the Toronto Raptors' head coach last summer.

Carlisle strongly recommended Stotts, who has a 114-158 record in parts of four seasons as the head coach with the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks. The Mavs will miss Stotts' experience and offensive expertise, but Carlisle was ecstatic to see his friend get another chance as a head coach.

"A great hire for a great franchise," texted Carlisle, who was an assistant in Portland early in his coaching career. "Terry was a big part of our championship success in Dallas, and we wish him the very best. He has the great fortune of going to work for Paul Allen, who, along with Mark Cuban, is one of the best owners in the NBA."

The Mavs' coaching staff under Carlisle has had a lot of seasoned assistant coaches... not surprising at all that two of them left to take over other teams. Happy for Casey and Stotts.

Was dealt a bad card in both franchises. Now there's a mix of great young players, this is probably his first real opportunity. LaMarcus alone should get him to 500. Depending on Lillard, it might be a playoff team.

I'm pretty positive we'd have seen new ideas and plays thrown in, en masse, no matter what. Almost a completely new roster this year.

More importantly, though, we're probably not gonna find a better assistant coach than him.

I think you could, but they'd be ridiculously over-qualified to be an assistant (Nate McMillan, Mike D'Antoni).

Watch Monte Mathis be the next to be poached sooner or later.

McMillan has another year of pay coming to him from Portland. D'Antoni resigned so he forfeited what ever he had coming, over qualified....but out of work.

Westphal was also plucked from the Mavs after being Carlisle's assistant a few years ago. (Think it was after the 08-09 season...)

Stotts it appears is going to a better situation though.

Westphal was an assistant for Avery, not Rick.

I don't think we'll be employing a flow offense this season. With Stotts and Kidd gone it seems highly unlikely. I expect a return to what Carlisle used back when he first started here. The system that got us off to a 2-7 start before Calisle agreed to hand over the keys to Kidd.

Our offense will depend on the egos.

All the "1yr guys" can be motivated to win and play great team basketball or they will desperately try to pad their individual stats and go 1 on 5 like Lamar Odom. We will see...

Forgotten about that. Weird thing is he was still with the Mavs and became part of management the first year when Carlisle was here. Guess that is why I thought he was still an assistant that year....

Not sure what Carlisle will devise for this group, but I have faith that he will come up with something. After all, he did allow Kidd to take the reins of the offense and called less plays from the sidelines. And he was the mastermind behind the Pacers run to the NBA Finals.

I'm not implying that our new offense will be unsuccessful. I'm just speculating that we won't be using the flow offense anymore and will likely return to Carlisle's old system. There is a possiblity it works well with Collison running the show.

Looks like the Jim O'Brien deal is going down for sure:
