From what I've heard from Magic fans, it sounds like they'd be thrilled with a Collison/Mayo/Kaman/1st rd pick type of package. That sounds like a huge bargain for us if we can get it done.

Collison and Mayo could both walk away from the Magic the next summer.

I would be more trilled to keep Mayo and get Dwight done with Kaman/Roddy/Vince/Collison/Dojo

Wont Roddy be a free agent as well?

While that has to beat whatever the Nets could throw out there, Rockets could easily trump it. Unless they are totally scared off by the rumors that Dwight wont re-sign in Houston.

So does anyone care to hypothesize to what degree Bynum re-signing with Lakers would help/hurt
the Mavs cause? How would trade kickers, etc. factor in? No way Bynum gets a no trade clause, right? Dirk and Kobe are the only ones in the league with them. Seems to me that Bynum wont re-sign knowing he could wind up on a rebuild if he does. Works in the Mavs favour. Also still maintain that the Clippers are a dark horse that no one is talking about.

Collison is still on his rookie deal... he'd be restricted. And I have a pretty good feeling that OJ would go wherever the money was, so it'd be on Orlando to make him want to stay.

And I really doubt that the second package would get it done, though I've love to be able to put Dirk, Matrix, AND Mayo around Dwight.

I don't think it's wise to entertain this pipe dream one bit unless we have more substantial facts. Just focus on reality, there might be a silver lining after all.

Quote:
There has been a puzzling tendency around the NBA over the last 24 months to exaggerate the Mavericks’ cap space. It infected the discussion of Dallas’ grand plans to sign both Howard and point guard Deron Williams, even though the math most generous to the Mavs showed that they couldn’t have carved out nearly enough cap space this summer to actually pay max deals to both players.

As things stand now — and things are always subject to change — the Mavs should be able to barely squeeze in a max deal to Howard, who will be eligible for a starting salary on his next contract of $20.5 million. But the math is tight, and the idea that the Mavs could chase a second potential star in free agency is currently fanciful.

To wit: The Mavs, as of this moment, have $34.2 million in guaranteed money for the 2013-14 season committed to four players: Nowitzki, Shawn Marion, Vince Carter and first-round pick Jared Cunningham. There has been mass confusion about the status of Carter’s deal, but according to Deeks and other sources, $2 million of the veteran shooting guard’s $3.18 million deal for 2013-14 became guaranteed when the Mavs did not waive him on June 30; that amount has been factored into the $34.2 million figure above, as has the customary 120 percent rookie scale figure for Cunningham.

But the rules — those rules again! — say the Mavs must account for eight empty roster spots, up to 12, by adding eight rookie minimum salary charges at $490,180 a pop. Toss those in, and you’re up to $38.1 million. Even assuming a very nice 5 percent bump up in the cap level from $58 million to $60 million, the Mavs would have about $21.9 million in cap space — just enough to fit Howard’s $20.5 million max salary, but not enough to upgrade the roster in any other meaningful way.

The Mavs could trim about $1 million off that figure by using the stretch provision on Carter’s deal, but this $38.1 million amount doesn’t account for a number of other potential charges: cap holds linked to a pile of outgoing free agents, including point guard Darren Collison, a useful young player, and just about everyone Dallas acquired this summer; a cap hold linked to guard Roddy Beaubois, once thought to be a core piece of the Mavs’ future but now sort of on the outs there; shooting guard O.J. Mayo’s player option, which he may well decline; a team option on shooting guard Dominique Jones; any money for second-round picks Jae Crowder and Bernard James; and the possibility that Dallas might keep and use its own first-round pick in next year’s draft.

Again: All of this is workable for one of the league’s brainiest front office regimes. The Mavs can renounce all their free agents, sign Crowder and James to non-guaranteed deals for 2013-14 (and simply cut them), trade Marion’s expiring deal ($9.066 million with and early-termination option at Marion’s choice) between now and next season’s trade deadline (a real potential game-changer) and pull lots of other simple moves to open up Howard-size cap space. Dallas will have the sign-and-trade route, a path Brooklyn and the Lakers will not be able to use next summer, since those two teams will be at or above the payroll level where the new collective bargaining agreement prohibits teams from entering into sign-and-trades.

So it’s fine for Howard to use the Mavs as a threat, and for all of us to place Dallas as the three-time Defensive Player of the Year’s theoretical free agency front-runner. But let’s not go overboard in detailing Dallas’ potential cap space, or forget that the Mavs will have to somehow field a full roster around the Nowitzki/Howard pairing if they do pull it off. Howard is worth these machinations, but they are tricky.

What I came away with from that article is: "it's hard to get two two superstars on the same team"

Thanks for the breaking news, Mr. Lowe.

Man, it is pretty crazy to think of a guy getting over a third of your cap space... opinions on whether it is worth it or not?

That's what Dirk is making - I don't see why Dight wouldn't also be worth that kind of money... Franchise players are expensive for a reason.

His rep might have taken a hit with the whole debacle but the best center in the league is absolutely worth it.

I think I remember reading something a while ago on how the top shelf guys should be making even more than they are (for both on and off court reasons).

Edit: Can't seem to find the article again but the gist of it was how the discrepancy between revenue that a franchise player generates compared to other guys actually makes them underpaid in comparison to the mid/lower tier guys.

My thoughts about the pipedream:

He wont make it into the 2013 FA. The Magic gonna trade him until the deadline for sure. Some value, dumping JRich or Hedo and maybe control his destiny a little bit (WC instead of Nets/EC etc).

Maybe he wont make it even into the season. Huge distraction for the team and probably ugly homegame atmospheres. Pretty sure the Magic dont want this the entire year. Specially because they cant semi-punish him with a no trade ("ok, sign then for a crappy team") since we are a good franchise with cap.

Bynum signing an extension would be pretty bad because thats probably the best trade the Magic can fall back at any time until the deadline). Without extension not so much because he can straight walk away. So lets see if he want to secure the money or prefer to control his destiny without risking ending up in Cleveland or Toronto etc.

Lopez? The Magic dont like him and they dont wanna ship Dwight to his preferred destination (and an EC team). With the Nets S5 i dont see him piling up great stats (maybe something like 16/7), so there has to be a team liking Lopez so much that they ship the Magic something really really nice. I dont see such a team right now.

So if Bynum signs an extension we have to beat the Bynum package (or the potential 3 Way package deal).

Thats tough because our value are crappy firstrounder, Collison/Roddy as RFA and Mayo pretty much being an UFA again, Wright as minor interesting talent etc. A breakout season from several guys would help a lot.

Hedos last year is just six millions guaranteed, Jrich has 2/12 left so the Magic would probably prefer Jrich over Hedo.

If the Magic would really trade with us its probably look like that:
http://basketball.realgm.com/tradech..._trade/6133014

Dwight/Jrich for Kaman/Jones/Jones/Wright/Carter and then Collison or Beaubois (depending who has the better season), picks and three million.

Collison or Roddy because they just extended Nelson and they are both RFA.

Probably the Magic would demand Mayo instead of Carter but lets see, you could argue that Mayo would walk away from the post Dwight Magic team because its pretty much a 15-20 win team for longer time.

So in our pipedream we could probably roll out:

Collison/West (maybe Roddy instead of Collison)
Mayo/West/Jrich (probably Carter instead of Mayo)
Marion/Crowder
Dirk/Brand
Dwight/Brand/James

Still: Pray that Bynum doesnt sign an extension. Our package could beat the EC Nets/Lopez package or an expiring Bynum. And that no 3rd team offer something stupid for Lopez.

Some details about Bynum:

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.c...will-not-sign/

Quote:
Here is how this dance is going to go — the Lakers are going to offer Bynum a max contract extension, which would add three years on to the additional year he has on his deal.

Bynum will turn that down. He will play out the season and — if he has not been traded by the Lakers for Howard — Bynum will re-sign a five-year deal with the Lakers at the max.

Why go that route? Because by becoming a free agent Bynum gets five years and larger raises than are allowed under an extension. It is what Deron Williams did with the Nets, it is what all free agents will do as long as the CBA stays worded the way it does.
So again, the Magic or a 3rd team willing to trade for a future UFA? Then Bynum has the option to re-sign with his new team (Magic probably lottery bound) or choose the four years in Dallas...

Nothing new there. We're still in the same position. The scenario they laid out of the Magic keeping Dwight past the deadline is ridiculous. Why would they do that if they know he's abandoning ship? Really our only hope is if he gets traded to Houston and stays true to his word that he will leave. But even that is not guaranteed since Dwight has a history of changing his mind every few minutes.

More of the same. CBA wise can't do much outside of Dirk.

I can't see Houston changing his mind, especially if he wants to be the face, with Lin down there, hard to see him over taking Lin.

I'd say it's easier to overtake Lin in Houston than it is to overtake Dirk in Dallas.

I'm not agreeing that Lin could be the face of the franchise over Dwight, but I will say that in Dallas he'd really only have to wait a couple years to overtake Dirk, if he played his PR cards right.

And the big loser if Bynum walks next summer as UFA to Atlanta...or Dallas.

Harden and Paul signing extensions/new contracts and bynum is the biggest FA hitting the market.

"League sources told Chris Broussard"

The guy is a tool, he was "breaking" Derons contract signing news like an hour after Deron tweeted it...

We'll see if Broussard finally gets one right.

I wouldn't mind seeing Bynum in a Mavs uniform if Dwight goes to the Lakers...

Other names likely to emerge. Example: Just heard Harkless to Orlando. But deal that's being submitted for league approval indeed Pau-less
