LAS VEGAS – Some hook-ups are meant to be and how can you not like the combination of Nellie and Belinelli.
It goes beyond the name game. Golden State coach Don Nelson has found himself a keeper in Italian Marco Belinelli, who poured in 37 points in the Warriors' summer-league opener Saturday with a dazzling array of jumpers and slashes to the bucket. The 6-5 21 year old caught the Warriors' eyes early in the evaluation process and they took him with the 16th overall pick.
"He's going to be really good," Nelson said. "He didn't even really show any of his moves."
With the departure of Jason Richardson, who was traded to Charlotte for rookie Brandan Wright, the Warriors will have an opening in their starting lineup at shooting guard. Belinelli appears to have the tools to grow into that spot.
He was the star of Day 2 at the NBA Summer League as the Warriors beat New Orleans, 110-102.
Joining the Warriors, who eliminated the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs with a combination of athleticism and hot shooting, would seem to be a perfect fit for Belinelli, who looks like Brent Barry physically but plays much differently.
With Nelson, he will be given some rope when it comes to shot selection and the growing pains that young players typically go through.
