ESPN is reporting that Steve Spurrier will be the next head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks. They state that Spurrier has agreed to a deal to take over after Holtz steps down.

Yeah, perfect...just what Arkansas needed. South Carolina is our permanent East opponent. Now THEY'LL be just as good as FL, TN, GA within 3 years.

All jokes aside, he'll turn a mid-level SEC team into a NC contender in less than 3 years if you ask me. Think of all the skill players on the east coast...think of the most player-friendly "skill" coach...that's probably gonna be spurrier in a lot of recruits minds.

Spurrier is a historically poor recruiter...the level of recruits will be dependant on the quality of his staff

Even if his assistants are doing the leg work, it's ultimately up to Spurrier to close them. Based on all the Florida alums in the league, on both sides of the ball, it would seen that he's done a damn good job of closing.

he never recruited out of the state of Florida. he doesn't like leaving his post to go talk to high school kids...and the talent pool in SC isn't as stacked as it is in Florida.

Why would he have to leave the state of Florida?

If it's a choice between getting his ass kicked by the Gators and Phil Fulmer every year or leaving SC to recruit, I'm betting that he'll go with the latter.

I think Spurrier did a damn fine job making sure his roster was stocked for years and years. I don't think I would throw the poor recruiter stone.

South Carolina will be a perrenial player as soon as he can build up the program. Holtz didn't leave him as bare as many think. I see SC as a tough schedule for any team starting immediately.
