KVH out with broken right hand
per Fish
DALLAS— The Dallas Mavericks announced today forward Keith Van Horn suffered a broken right hand during the game at Orlando on March 31. He will meet with a hand specialist early next week and surgery likely will be performed at a later date. There is no timetable for his return at this point.
In 53 games this season, Van Horn (6-10, 245) has averaged 8.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in 20.4 minutes per game.

This is terrible news. Just when Keith was showing valuable signs of excellence. Very, very disappointing.
It seems like so long ago that we were worried how minutes would be distributed in the playoffs and who might get squeezed out of the rotation.

I believe this actually **helps** the Mavs against SA in the playoffs.
But if they get past SA, it will hurt them. Just a person on matchups. Van Horn would be a perfect guy to combat Phoenix, but not SA. If anyone remembers... he was a big reason why the Mavs won in overtime the first game of the year.

Do we sign another big man, say Marcus Fizer if NO doesn't renew his 10-day contract? What's Keon Clark doing these days? Do we dip into the NBDL for a guy like Rick Rickert, Cezar Trybanski, or George Leach (good shot-blocker)?

Come to think of it, I remember that play on Friday when KVH was trying to take a charge on one of their forwards and had his arm chest high, but it got in the way. The impact was such that it might have snapped his wrist.

Well at least now we can make plans without having to worry about when he will come back and how well he will play if he does. I would just cut his injury prone ass!

Does the whole injury thing seem almost surreal to anyone else? This is bordering on absurd. Goodness. Time to plan to play it out w/out him, at least this kind of injury has a lot less uncertainty as far as timeline. He'll be out long term, especially w/surgery.

I still think we might be able to get something for him because of that juicy expiring contract of his.

Maybe it's one of those really subtle breaks, where you can tape that bitch up and get back in the game!

Let us just phase KVH out of our long term plans as he is taking it to us in the short term plan arena. Even when he does return, it will be a matter of days, no, hours.. before another stickly bone snaps.
I am starting to feel the same way about Daniels. However, I'm holding out a bit on MD because it appears to be one injury, and a lingering one, that's messing with him. Still, this doth bring up the question: do our players lack cojones?

I'm doubting Keef has the heart for that.

That's exactly how I felt when I read about his injury late last night. Almost felt like I was dreaming it's so absurd.

but do you really plan to play without KVH? He plays behind Dirk. It just means more minutes for Dirk and a few for Powell...

I don't think it would be a bad idea to pick up a long range shooter, but man, it would be nice if the guy could also back-up Dirk. I don't like this injury at all.

That's right. He's a free agent at the end of this season. Any chance of getting something back in return for him ended at the trading deadline in February.

we could theoretically get something in return for him, if a team wanted to do a sign & trade--but who's gonna trade anything worth a crap for KVH? Unless it's an expiring contract, cash & a draft pick, then why would we bother?
If we DON'T cut him and pick somebody else up, that's a sure sign to me that the Mavs plan on bringing him back next year (as cutting him would cost us his Bird rights, as I understand the CBA). That would be terrible news.

no one is giving up a draft pick for Van Horn..you can write that down.
I can see a team like Atlanta picking him up for the MLE, but please do not re-sign him in Dallas...The mavs need a bruiser like Josh Powell as a backup for Dirk. Let Powell work on his offensive game in the offseason.

I don't see KVH being re-signed here and I don't think his market value will be high enough to warrant someone needing a S & T.
Good riddance.

ummmm....
you do know that the trade dealine passed over a month ago right?
Besides, Mark Cuban has decided to go Donald Sterling on us. In the past, sure, he would have dealt an expiring contract for a borderline superstar with a long term deal . But I think that he's proven over and over again that he's not willing to invest in this team any more. I predicted in the offseason that Cuban would just let the contracts of Van horn and Terry expire. He's been just as cheap as expected.
Mark Cuban used to be a benefit to this franchise. Now he's just like every other owner in the league. Only a hell of a lot more irritating.

I've seen enough of Marcus Fizer to know that he's is a slow, short NBA BUUUSSSSSST.
But he'd be cheap, which is obviously a big deal to Cuban, and more importantly, he's healthy.

this is not good no matter the keith hate going on right now.
We saw tonight what our second unit looks like. Darrell, Rawle, Josh Powell, Dampier, Stackhouse. Not a shooter in the bunch.
They even played decent defense but couldn't score worth a crap. 15 points in the quarter. It'll be better with devin there, but with no one (and I mean no one) who can hit an outside shot they'll just pack it in.

Me being in the east and not having cable, this was the 3rd time I've visually saw the mavs play this season(Espn Gamecast). In today's game powell showed he could gaurd 4's like martin and najera nad 3's like anthony. This is the type of guy I want backing up dirk. A tough defender and good rebounder. No disrespect to dirk but, with two guys who don't play the best of defense at the same postiton creates a hole. That leaves our centers to gaurd the quicker powerfowards, which is a small part of there foul trouble. With powell you can leave him out there on 4's and apperantly 3's too. Next season van horn is definetly gone, which will improve our center's play.

Dallas needs to oppopsite of Dirk. Call it the yin-yang. Just like Dallas needs the opposite at the center position.
Dirk is a silky smooth forward who can post up some, but enjoys the outside. He is an excellent ballhandler and driver. He is a good rebounder defensively.
So his counterpart would be a dirty sob that likes to offensive rebound, that can post up a little.. to steal a Seinfeld phrase... Dallas needs a "mudder" at the 4. Because in the playoffs... every game is going to be muddy.
Van Horn just doesn't fit. And that is why a guy like PJ Brown is so important to get too. He's a mudder. His mother was a mudder.

P.J. is more of a 5, he would struggle just as much and diop damp and dirk when gaurding 4's. Plus P.j. only has maybe a couple years left in him. He would be a huge upgrade defensively over van horn though.

I believe Reggie Evan is free. I've always liked his game and he gives the Spurs fits.

Reggie Evans was traded to the Nuggets about a month ago. He's been ripping it up for them on the boards.
He played in the game today against the MAvericks.

I worded that wrong. I meant he's free after the season. He didn't sign until late and even then Seattle only gave him a one year deal.
