Default Interesting Speculation

In Marc Stein's article, where he mentions the 50/50 shot of a trade happening this weekend, there is a quote that stood out to me towards the bottom.

Here it is:
"The Mavericks would also be risking the loss of Wallace without compensation in the summer, after billing Nowitzki and Jamison as their frontcourt tandem for the foreseeable future."

What's really interesting to me is hearing that the Mavs seem to be more willing to trade Walker at this point. It's also interesting that Dirk and Jamison was billed as the frontcourt of the future - not Walker.

Could it be that my hopes are coming true? Is it possible that Portland and Dallas are realizing that the best trade for both teams is a Walker/Wallace deal. It would give Portland the playmaking they want and need. It also allows them to keep their salary flexibility.

From Dallas' perspective, it keeps our lockerroom harmony better. It keeps our instant offense off the bench. Best of all, it allows to continue to play the matchup ball that I sometimes prefer - where Fortson or Bradley starts sometimes, Howard starts some, etc.

I really hope that as the losses continue to mount, Portland will begin to lower their demands and take someone like Walker instead of Jamison. It may help both teams more in the long run.

Nice post, ddh. At this point, the Mavs should hold their cards and take their time, see if they can't build a nice win streak while Portland starts sweating.

If the Mavs trade Walker it would better to wait until Steve and possibly Delk are healthy, because then Best is our only ballhandler.

Hell yeah. Daniels will have to handle the ball for us in the meantime or drop Mamandou and sign a PG to a 10 day contract.

you know i'd take a chance on sheed(for walker, not AJ) for the rest of this season to test his attitude when surrounded by Mavs. If he still acts like a tool, let him walk. I know thats seems silly to just let talent go for nothing, but Dallas would still have plenty of talent, and they still have to give Nash a lot of $ anyways. PLUS Sheed might have to do a sign and trade,so dallas might get something.
IMO i think Fin would be able to turn sheeds attitude around.

Walker isn't going to opt out in the off season. He would have to walk away from 15 Mil next year. Any new deal is going to get probably 8-9 a year.

I don't follow... Where in that statement did it say that the Mavs are more willing to trade Walker at this point? If you could find an article or something that says exactly (or approximately) that, then I will shut up. Personally, I think you're just wanting to get rid of Walker just because you want to get rid of Walker.

And that makes me angry.

MightToine, I've been more friendly and more patient than a lot of posters on this board to you. I'm not sure I appreciate you coming at me saying that I want Walker traded. That makes me mad...

I have been fair to Walker all season long. While others have repeatedly crucified him, I've also made note of all the positive things he does for this team. I think he could be a huge asset to Dallas.

But yes, my preference is to keep Antawn Jamison. And if one of the Twins were to be traded for Wallace, I want Walker to be the one to get dealt. Apparently, some of the Mavs organization seems to feel the same way.

I qoute Marc Stein:
"The Mavericks have their own hesitations. Trading Antoine Walker instead of Jamison probably makes more sense for Dallas, but sources say the Blazers aren't interested in Walker, even though Walker's contract also expires in 2005. Giving up Jamison instead, meanwhile, could give the Mavericks the most volatile chemistry they've had in years -- with Walker and Wallace on the same team -- and guarantees Cuban a very expensive summer.

Making this trade, as constituted, would leave Dallas with three max-contract players (Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley and Walker) and two of this summer's most coveted free agents (Wallace and Steve Nash). The Mavericks would also be risking the loss of Wallace without compensation in the summer, after billing Nowitzki and Jamison as their frontcourt tandem for the foreseeable future."

Would you please take note of the comment about trading Walker making more sense to Dallas!
Also, please note that Dirk and Jamison are the ones apparently being billed as the frontcourt of the foreseeable future. Not Walker.

If Walker stays, that's fine with me. I hope he and this team have great success together. But if I had to choose, I would trade Walker for Wallace.

I seriously hope that one of these days you can talk basketball with me instead of concentrating all of your efforts in defending a player you have no need to defend with me. I like Walker. Relax. Now, move on.

First off, I apologize for my outburst. It was out of line and very UN-MightyToine like(at least the Good Mightytoine...lol). Now let me say this :

Marc stein SAYS that the Mavericks have their hesitations. Now what does he base that on? Does he KNOW WHAT CUBAN IS THINKING? How does he know that Cuban is "hesitant"? What makes him think that Cuban is even remotely thinking of trading Walker at this point?

*THAT* is my beef with this whole issue(again sorry for attacking you and I applaud you for your restraint in letting me have it 'cause I did deserve whatever retort you would respond with). Marc STEIN Himself is saying this as if he KNOWS what's going on in Cuban's head. Truth of the matter is :

HE DOESN'T! It's all S-P-E-C-U-L-A-T-I-O-N.

Oh and I saw that "Dirk and Jamison as the future of their frontcourt statement". But what about the future of their BACKCOURT? Walker and Nash make a pretty good combo, don't you think?

Default RE:Interesting Speculation

As far as writers go, Marc Stein is more connected with this organization than anyone. His word carries quite a bit of weight with me - at least, as much as anyone's. He wrote for the DMN for years.

I am starting to get this feeling that Walker isn't really in this team's long term plans. But I'll admit that is nothing more than my own guess. I've heard Rick Majerus hint at that and now Marc Stein is as well. We'll see what happens...I sure don't pretend to know, but it sounds like we got him because the price was cheap.

As for the idea of Walker in the backcourt, I don't think that happens. Walker doesn't have the quickness or shooting ability to play the 2. I don't think that's this teams long-term plans. If it is, we're in trouble...Walker is a forward in every sense.

Like I said, if Walker is a part of this team's plans, that's great. We could do worse, without a doubt. But I'm still not convinced. I still think Rasheed may end up in Dallas whether Walker is the bait or not. I'm just not sure that this is all going to go away. Even John Nash said that the word "dead" was too strong, but that nothing was imminent.

My guess is that this franchise is letting their stance be made known. We're not desperate, and a deal will have to be on our terms. That probably means that they have to take TAW to do a deal...Now, does Portland pay the extra money for Jamison and TAW, or do they go cheaper with Walker, TAW?

This is the only trade I would really like for Rasheed and it works for both teams money wise and talent wise.

Dallas Trades:
Antoine Walker
Tony Delk
Cash or Pick to sweeten deal even more

Portland Trades:
Rasheed Wallace

I would be very upset and disappointed if Walker is ONCE AGAIN traded. He has done everything that the Mavs have asked him to do and would really tick me off to no end if he was traded anyway.

I still don't believe that Cuban traded for Walker just so he can get rid of him....I'm sorry but until the day that Walker is "really" on the verge of being traded, I look at all these trades and rumors as being nothing more than bullcrap.

Have you been watching the games lately, ddh33? I mean Walker is just now starting to be that point-forward that Nellie was gushing about all the time. If he continues at this pace, so what if Walker is a forward? He can sub for Nash at the PG....He can play several minutes at Center....He can play some minutes at SF....

His versatility combined with his emerging Passing/Rebounding/less-shooting game makes him too much of an asset to just dump for financial reasons.... Now Cuban dumping LaFrentz? THAT was for financial reasons and he just so happened to get a player that may be turning into something very special before our very eyes and we gave up garbage(and Welsch) for him.

There is no doubt that Antoine Walker is a very versatile player who can provide a lot of the things we desperately need. I'm excited about the way he's sacrificed his game lately. It's like he's starting to understand what this team needs from him to be successful. That's what gives me the most hope about this team.

But, I don't think his versatility should overshadow some of his weaknesses. Just because Walker can handle the ball and pass doesn't make him a PG. That's why he's called a Point Forward. He doesn't have the lateral quickness to play on the perimeter all the time, and even if he did, it would only take away from his effectiveness. He doesn't have the bulk to consistently play down low, although he has a nice low post game. Like I said, versatility still doesn't make a guy something that he's not. Walker is a versatile forward who can play all five positions in a pinch, but he's still a forward.

Thanks also to the person who pointed out the possible significance of the word "probably" from Marc Stein's article. Maybe it is only speculation. Either way, I'm not going to worry about this anymore. I just thought it fit some things that have been mentioned by some other people - namely Rick Majerus. Just thought it was a little interesting...

But I don't think Antoine Walker is going to be traded for financial reason. I don't even think Raef was traded for financial reasons. I think this franchise was a little worried about his health and production.
