Default AP Headline: Al Gore Detained, Fined for Endangering Pulbic Safety

Former vice president Al Gore busted for speeding

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — Former Vice President Al Gore was cited for speeding as he drove a rented car to visit family on the coast earlier this month.

Gore, who was alone, was issued a $141 ticket for driving 75 miles per hour on a highway in the northwest corner of the state, police said this week. The speed limit is 55 mph.

He was issued the ticket on Aug. 3, said Lt. Dale Rutledge of the Oregon State Police.

Gore will pay the fine, spokesman Mike Feldman told The Associated Press Friday.

The trooper who stopped Gore didn't recognize him until he presented his license, Sgt. Andrew Merila told KATU-TV.

PORTLAND, Ore. (Reuters) - Former Vice President Al Gore paid a $141 fine for speeding on a highway last month near Oregon's coast, a state police official said on Friday.
Gore, who carried Oregon in the 2000 presidential election, was driving in a rented car to visit family when he was issued a speeding ticket for going 75 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone on a highway between Portland and the Oregon coast, a popular summer destination.

"He was cooperative, polite and respectful," said Dale Rutledge, spokesman for the Oregon State Police.

Gore mailed in his check for the ticket, well ahead of the deadline for contesting it on Sept. 13, Rutledge said.

The trooper said Gore, who carried Oregon when he ran for president in 2000, was polite throughout the encounter.

TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO

Al Gore was caught driving 75 miles an hour on the highway up in Oregon and cited for speeding. Poor Al, he'll do anything to get his name on a ticket.

Jay Leno: “Al Gore, got a speeding ticket in Oregon last week, cited for going nowhere fast.”

Jay Leno: “Poor Al. I guess he tried to talk his way out of the ticket, and the cop fell asleep.”
