Agreed, Thibs just way too in love with his old guys, Noah to Minny soon?
It was a perfect package to build on. Waiters was supposedly the salary filler. But Bam, and Richardson, are fits to what Thibs is trying to do defensively.
I was looking at the numbers for Butler's deal and boy, Butler's theatrics at practice....I can see why.....but honestly, if I was in that lockerroom I wouldn't trust the guy.
He's due 20 million this year. The Wolves offered 4 years 100 million. Butler wanted a re-do which meant dissolving the Wolves roster except the 5 starters...5 years 175 million(avg 35 per). Now with that off the table, the max he can get next summer is 5 years 190 million, if he signs with another team, it's 4 years 141 million. Start of next year he'll be 30...not sure if it's wise for a team to go 5 years for a Thibs guy, we've seen a short shelf life for Thib's starters, sort of the result of Thib's not using much of his bench.

I might re-think my dislike of Butler if he keeps having games like he did against the Cavs. Wow.

But seriously, they'd want DSJ right? This is Thibs we're talking about though.
Unless Miami has truly moved on I don't see how we beat Bam & Josh Richardson. Barnes alone isn't enough in that scenario and Dwight Powell is now too valuable to be a toss-in

So question: does Luka being obviously ready to "win now" and compete at a high level maybe in the next year or two make Butler more attractive to people? DAJ, Luka, Butler is 3 stars. And then whoever is leftover between Barnes and DSJ, i.e. whoever wasn't traded for Butler.
Does that get us in the discussion in the West? We need another shooter like Middleton but no $ to shop for him? Or do you worry about that later?

Was originally staunchly against this idea, but if (and only if) Butler agrees to an extension I would explore a trade involving Wes, DSJ, or Powell.
If not, let's throw the max at Khris Middleton this offseason.
Edit: As soon as I typed this out I had hypothetical buyer's remorse. Let's stick with the developmental plan instead of splurging for a 29 year-old who doesn't really fit our culture.

Matthews

DSJ
Butler
Luka
Barnes
DJ.....................would be a very nice and versatile starting 5.

I AM a big fan...he is uber competetive and a great two way player. A poor mans Kawhi. I'm not sure the drama really reflects him. He just knows what he's worth and wants to get it. Can't really blame the guy for that.
As for Mavs getting him? Aint Gonna Happen.
Matthews for Butler? Why would Minny want that?
They turned down FOUR first round picks from Houston. Granted, probably late round picks...but is Matthews better than that? No.
Mavs just don't have the material for a trade like this. Not for a player other teams really want.

Pretty sure its not four 1st from Houston. Probably two 1st and the others are in such a way protected that they convert into garbage 2nd round picks

Nope, four firsts. Can't be consecutive, so in alternate years, over the next 7 years.
And Minny turned it down.

Yep, they offered '19, '21, '23, and '25 first rounders.

Wow, I'd jump all over that deal if I was owner. Coach and Gm though undermine their job stability with that deal, so not surprised it was turned down. GM's and coaches don't survive long once teams start heading downwards, so neither would be around to take advantage of the haul in future draft picks.

So Jimmy Butler will be sitting his second game out 8 so far this season, to rest his sore body. Dude is a straight up warrior. He wants to win so much more than the rest. Except when he feels like he needs a little rest.

Barnes, Matthews, and protected 1st round pick for Butler and a bad contract? Is that good? Maybe JJ as well.

Lose either the bad contract or the protection on the pick.

And ensure an extension, otherwise you're just throwing away assets for a 1-year rental on a non-playoff team.

I thought we couldn't trade a first round pick since we still owe one to ATL?

We cannot trade any first round picks until May 14th, 2019 unless we get one from another team and trade that same pick out again.
Until our pick confers, we cannot trade it or even a future pick, because that pick is still hanging over our head. So....
A) If we do keep our pick because we get a top-5 pick in the lottery, we can trade the 2019 pick (which we retain) and ONLY the 2019 pick, but still cannot trade a future pick until Atlanta gets theirs. This can't happen until May 14th, 2019-- after the season ends and after draft order is established to determine who keeps the pick.
B) If we don't draft in the top 5, then the pick goes to ATL. As soon as the lottery is over, we can trade future picks (2020 and beyond). We still can't trade consecutive years, but if we give ATL our 2019, we could hypothetically trade the 2020, 2022, and 2024, but only after the lottery is drawn and the pick confers.
Other than that, we can only trade other team's picks and our own second rounders.
