Dirk is great and one of the top players in the league today. As far as All-Time PF's, my rankings as of today would be:

Duncan - for obvious reasons
Barkley/Malone - pick one
McHale - don't be fooled because he deferred to Bird to win...and he was a very good defender as well
Pettit - I didn't get to see him play though
Hayes - dominant on both sides of the ball
KG - I pick him over Dirk because he plays defense and is better at getting others involved....his two seasons with actual help make me think he would have been just as successful in Dallas surrounded by all the good teammates Dirk got to play with

Yeeeess indeed, I will never forget that play.

PS In the photo, Dirk looks like a male pornstar picking up chicks in a bar.

Was Elgin Baylor considered a PF or SF? I know he was only around 6'5" or so, but back in the 60s that could have been a PF.

He was a PF/C...listed at 6-9. I'm not sure if he was actually 6-9, but he matched up with Alcindor in college....

And here I thought that this will be one of those “Dirk can beat Chuck Norris in a fist fight” kind of threads like the one Kidd had the other month.

Dirk has thrown down some absolutely sick dunks this year. His lefty slam against the Lakers in the first quarter a couple of weeks back is a notable one. His shot is falling right now too. You can't stop this guy, no matter how you play him, and he's been stellar on the defensive end this season. In terms of pure ability, he is light years ahead of where he was even 2 years ago, which was statistically one of his 2 best years to date.

Nowitzki is already locked into the top 7 PF of all time (i'd have him at #5 myself, personally) and is only halfway through his career. I have no doubt in my mind he's going to be locked into the top 4 ever behind Duncan and Malone by the time he's done. I think the 4 (and counting) titles basically lock it up for Duncan, but if Dirk wins a ring, he has a real shot to be #2 on most people's ballots.

Basically, Dirk is amazing. He is already measured by standards reserved for the all time greats, and his face will be on the Mt. Rushmore of power forwards by the time it's all said and done.
great post. honestly this year dirk should be the second team all defensive pf behind kg.

And watch the Dirk hate come on about him being called a choker after missing the shot against the Lakers.

35 points, 11 boards, 3 threes, 5 blocks. Effing beast.

Won't matter. Go read a "national board." He will get labeled a choker for not hiiting the shot. Want proof? Go read insidehoops.com for starters.

Like others said in this thread... there is a lot of hate directed towards Dirk.

Those who don't see the greatness of Dirk are those fans who only value "high-flying dunks and athletic moves." They judge a player's value by those highlight reels they see.

Dirk has always been one of my favorite players. Now that I have watched the Mavs move closely, I have realized that he truly is a special guy.

...talk about a team without alot of talent surrounding their superstar... don't look beyond the Mavs of the past couple of years (especially the team that went to the Finals). Dirk takes this team from being a below average team to being a title contender..or, at least he has in years past.

he's still so hobbled that he can't even take shaq off the drive, and he puts up 32 and 12.

a lesser player (ie, dwyane wade) wouldn't have been on the court yesterday.

my embarrasingly gay love for dirk grows bigger every day.

Nice X&O's on the greatness of the dirkster yesterday. So he leads in scoring, rebounding, second in assists and now he IS playing like kobe/lebron at the end of games, they've just figured out to let him dribble around outside get switches to the BIG, not the small and let him take them off the dribble.

I've noticed this occurring since he's become so aggressive with Kidd here. Nice stuff. Video at the link.

Following the NCAA tournament, my next favorite time of year immediately follows, the NBA playoffs. With only a week or so left in the regular season, the NBA playoffs are starting to take shape. The one game on the schedule tonight that really had the feel of a playoff game was the Mavs against the Suns in Phoenix.

I was ready to write off the Mavs after Dirk went down with that horrific looking knee injury last month, but Dirk showed a lot of grit to come back and play injured, beating the Warriors, a close loss to the Lakers and a real gutsy effort to beat the Suns today.

One of the great coaching adjustments that Coach Avery Johnson did today was to have Dirk run the PNR up top. It works better than J Kidd because Kidd isn't really a threat to score so you can play him soft. With Dirk running the PNR up top, the defense must respect his ability to shoot and put it on the floor, thus creating a bunch of problems. Here are a couple of sequences from that terrific comeback of the second half,
Quote:
The PNR works especially well when the player running it up top is a versatile scorer. When the Suns tried to play it straight up, Dirk just took it hard to the rim (and I agree w/ Van Gundy that Shaq fouls Dirk here),

Quote:
When the Suns decided to double Dirk off the PNR, Dirk finds a rolling Dampier. The Suns rotation comes late allowing Dampier to lay it in,

the mavs ran the same p-n-r with dirk and damp against the celts....probably ran it at least 5 or 6 times in the 4th, causing K-G to swith to damp with perkins left on Dirk.

Wow, put the ball in Dirk's hands at the end of games, who woulda thunk?

I love that all of the Mavs are driving again.
