So the general consensus is that the Mavs aren't going to offer Parsons max, especially after Cuban tried to convince him to opt-in.

This offseason might go down as worse than last offseason. Dirk just might go to GS if we're going to start from scratch.

I have reservations about giving Parsons a max contract, but I really don't think the Mavs can afford to mess around by trying to finesse free agency this summer. The limited number of top tier free agents leaves little room for error and a higher probability of coming up empty handed. I would rather see them shore up the foundation and then move to improve rather than betting the house on signing Conley and/or Whiteside.
On the other hand, I am intrigued by Kent Bazemore and wonder if his speed, athleticism, and motor might work well in the Carlisle system. Could you plug him in as starting SF and have his different talents (defense, rebounding, durability, and athleticism) neutralize the playmaking and shooting of Parsons? I probably wouldn't bet on that trade off, but last year the Mavs did seem a bit slow afoot compared to other teams in today's NBA. For example, I can imagine when Wes takes a break, you slide Bazemore over to SG and bring Anderson in to play SF. Now you have two young athletic wing players that can both rebound and fly around the basket. The downside is you are still looking to upgrade PG and C. And you will need some shooters to come off the bench.
At the end of the day, I would play this conservative and max out Parsons, but there maybe ways to improve this team by overspending on second tier players even if you lose him to free agency.

Three years in a row in the offseason isn't enough? Including twice to Parsons that we would be overpaying him.

Overpaying for Parsons leaves little to no salary cap room to improve with.

Defense, rebounding, durability, athleticism are all things the Mavs need more of. Sounds a lot like San Antonio's blueprint, too....not a bad thing.
I'm not a Parson's detractor...but as for playmaking, what was his plus/minus? He did have a pretty good assist number, but does the team play better when he's on the floor?

Or picking up undervalued players other teams didn't want, as the Mavs have done for the past several years.

@espn_macmahon: Chandler Parsons will follow through on his plans to become a free agent despite Mavs owner Mark Cuban's attempts to convince Parsons to opt in for the final season of his three-year, $46 million contract, sources told ESPN.com. With the salary cap spiking to a projected $94 million this summer, Parsons' camp expects him to receive a significant raise in free agency.

That really makes Cuban look desperate IMO...and could be a foreshadow of a bad offseason...
Thinking more on it, the real problem isn't giving him the money. The problem is trying to lock him up on the max and then to try and have him recruit other players. That is something that I wonder if Parsons is willing to risk if he has a less risky offer somewhere else.

I've felt in the back of my gut for some time that Parsons might not be coming back. And it'll be 100% because of his knee injuries.

It would be in his best interest to accept whatever we offer to be able to fit Conley or Howard. I want Howard here. So some guys like Parsons have to take lesser. I do have this thought if we can sign and trade him. I hear Gordon Hayward made a trade request. Sign and trade Parsons for Hayward?

That was all lies. Hayward loves it there and did not request. Utah has shot down any attempts too

I think Cuban needs to try hard for a sign and trade if Parsons is leaving.

I'd say Parsons owes Cuban at least that much, but you gotta convince the team he's going to as well... Easier said than done if they're not willing to give up anything to get him (and they don't have to since he's a free agent).

I know it's a shot in the dark. But if Durant for sure wants to leave. We could set this sign and trade up using Parsons. Both sides can come out even if Durant leaves for sure. Plus Westbrook can have his team. Parsons can go play for his old coach Billy Donovan. Durant can be our main superstar to build around for the future. Which he isn't in Oklahoma. Imagine the possibilities.

Durant is gonna be a superstar anywhere he goes... Why Dallas?

Because one season with Durant, Dirk, and Wes can make us dangerous. Donnie could set up a solid team around him too.

Why does Parsons think he deserves max? I get that the market allows for it some places..but F that here. We can't afford to over pay him again especially coming back off another injury.
Combine that with wildly overpaying Wesley, and that's a bad offseason. We end up with 2 starters that are not standout all around players near maxed out and both had significant injuries... isn't that as much potential for disaster as some of the other scenarios involving losing him?

There arent any SF out there. The mavs are not in a position to F around. He's the one big time FA that's come here and we're going to low ball him? Im not his biggest fan, but its a slippery slope what the FO is doing.

I'll continue with devils advocate on this topic...
Low ball him? I'm a little confused by that. He was getting paid pennies at Houston, and came here unproven in terms of consistency and had a massive pay increase. He has already been overpaid to come here based on potential and still hasn't shown consistency. He has shown trends, but that's it. So; Injured, trending upwards, Then injured.. then max out pay day?!
I do like him, I wish he was more aggressive most of the time in several areas but I like him overall. I just worry that we max him, and then Injury again.
I'm not sold on the scenario that we Max out Parsons coming off two injuries because there isn't anyone quite as good as he could be potentially, if he becomes and remains healthy. I'm leaning towards let him go if he isn't willing to work reasonably and get the next best thing with less risk of missing games.

None of that matters when the market says he's getting max offers from other teams. The mavs have no alternative options. Let Parsons walk and forget attracting ANY notable free agents this season and increase the chance Dirk is not in a Mavs uniform in October.

That's one picture, but then he and his contract are strapped to us long after we have wasted the last year of Dirk. So we gamble a big portion of the next 4-5 years of the franchise strictly on getting the last year (maybe two) of Dirk in a Mavs uni?

Yes, absolutely. Keeping Parsons is as risky as letting him go. No doubt about it.
I just know that we went on a 6 game winning streak and finished with the 6th seed while Parsons was in street clothes. Keeping Parsons won't change the outlook of making the 6-8 seed unless we got an A lister to go with him. Even then, I still don't think you're any better than the 5th seed.

Dont pay him the max, not with his injury history with the Mavs. He always talks how he admires Dirk, so let him act like it too. Like Dirk did. Like Wes did before the Jordana-Drama.
If he is all like "max or im out" then i say f off Chandler. Same goes with Deron, the guy is settled, he still gets money from Brooklyn, if he is demanding too much because he is greedy: Good luck somewhere else again.

If you don't pay him, you better have someone else lined up that will help the team.
The Mavs need to come out of this summer with Dirk and two really good players. Which players are up to the organization, but the need to get two of them is obvious.
Getting one is tough. Getting two is that much more difficult. If Parsons is not one of those two players, finding another one is going to take an amazing sales job and organization.

Yep. Its easy to say "goodbye Parsons you're not worth the max", but now you have to find a replacement AND perhaps look to upgrade the PG and C positions. IMO, Parsons is NOT worth the max, but given the lack of other options, you probably should gobble him up quickly and move on if you want to be competitive and do your due diligence to keep Dirk happy.

Its also about the team spirit and trying to win. Dirk pretty much paid Parsons first two years (overpaid).
If Parsons is all about "fuck FA and which other players we could may get, i want my max" then i say again: F off, i dont want him like that on the Mavs. Even if his replacement is Marvin Williams.
I want committed players. If the max contract is the most important thing for Chandler, so be it and good bye.

We've been spoiled by Dirk, who is a very unique person. Pretty much ALL NBA players want to get the most they can get. Heck, don't most people? Do you not want to get paid all you could at work? Would you say 'no' to millions more per year?
Not that I think Parsons is worth it. But I'm not going to get on his case for it.

Before they met with Dirk before his opt out, they were talking as if they were ready to pay Parsons. Maybe Dirk is the one who doesn't want to give up money just to pay Parsons his max.
