Jerry Sloan left the Jazz. Does this improve our chances on landing Williams?

Since when does a coach leaving means a team suddenly wants to get rid of their superstar.

Did other teams fans speculate that they'd get Dirk when Don Nelson gave the coaching job to Avery? Probably so but it was just as silly as this.

From what I remember Williams and Sloan had a good relationship prior to this year. So much so that that seemed to be the biggest reason Deron would not consider abandoning Utah. With Sloan gone and their relationship gone sour, what is to keep Deron from asking to be traded?

I think it decreases our chances. It should appease DWill a bit (but we'll see in the offseason).

You're right, it is possible. But maybe this is a sign that there are other issues within the organization. Deron could be completely turned off by Utah at this point. It's wishful thinking, but who knows.

I think Sloan "resigning" (getting canned) likely means that the organization is going all-in with Williams. I'm expecting them to make a deal before the deadline in hopes of convincing D-Will to re-sign. I seriously doubt they trade him anytime in the near future.

Interesting.

If this is true, then apparently the Jazz brass doesn't have a clue how to make their franchise player happy - it can only increase his chances of walking in 2012...

I REALLY hope this happens down the road. We need someone like D-Will to continue being awesome once Dirk starts declining (not that dirk's ever going to decline, but better safe than sorry).

Whenever he's free or when the trade frenzy starts i believe he's our guy. He's "Texas made" and i believe he definitely wants to come home and compete for a title with the mavs. Cuban will get it done.

Nobody ever likes to come home to play:

A. Too much pressure is your hometown
B. Too many family members begging

Any exception to this?.....Im sure someone besides Tyson Thompson came back to Dallas right?

Carmelo Anthony is from NYC and he just went to NYC...

(Billups just left Denver and he's from Denver, so that one used to count too...)

Uh, Melo's from New York. He went to syracuse, he wanted to go home.

I'm sure they're plenty of other examples as well, i think it's more likely that A) The hometown would stand behind and embrace the player rather than say "WIN A TITLE OR WE DISOWN YOU!" and B) The player's immediate family and circle aren't filled with leeches so that wouldn't be a problem.

How cool your hometown is a big factor.

NYC is another level. NYC, West Coast and Miami are the only places that draw people and keep people. Everything else depends on a whole lot.

I pray to the basketball gods that Deron does not sign with the Nets.

If he does, look out for the New york super teams.

On one side you have Deron Williams and Dwight Howard, on the other you have Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, and Amare Stoudemire.

FIGHT! Brooklyn Supanets vs New York superknicks.

It's probably not going to happen just like that with the Knicks. Stoudemire and Carmelo have huge contracts at around $20 million a year. They could offer a free agent like Paul about $18 million per year under the current cap, which isn't bad at all. Then again, a new CBA could change a lot and make it much more difficult to actually make that kind of an offer to someone like CP3. On top of that, even with the salary cap staying at around $58 million, they'd basically have three guys under contract taking all of that money and nothing left to fill up the roster other than the veteran's minimum and stuff.

Bump...Deron would be a huge addition to the Mavs. I think Marion, Tyson, and Brandon would benefit immensely. As Dirk gets older, he can roam the perimeter and take all the jumpshots he wants. No more getting abused inside...unless he prefers it, but doubt it.

Deron would be great for sure, but at this point some things have to change.

1. He can go the Carmello route (doubtful in my eyes)
2. Mavs need to have enough cap space to sign him after next year (also doubtful)
3. He facilitates a sign and trade kind of like Marion did, we have to come up with another nice young player tho before the end of next year or booby has to have a breakout year for that to possible.

mavs777, Good points. Is Butler a free agent next year? Does his salary come off the books? I'm definitely not a trade/salary expert, but if the numbers can somehow work out...he would be a huge pickup for the Mavs.

D Will is a free agent after next year assuming he opts out which is a safe bet. Butler is a free agent after this year but the safe bet is he and tyson resign, if that happens for lets say about 18 mill per year combined that puts the 2012/2013 at 60 Mill for mavs with pending team options to Roddy and Dojo, basically the mavs would have to ask for Deron to take a big paycut and Haywood to be traded.

Nobody can figure out our salary cap space because we have no idea what the cap is going to be - there's a new Collective Bargaining Agreement getting put into place before next season.

We already have $61m in salary for 2011-2012 with Chandler, Butler, Stevenson, Peja and Cardinal all coming off the books...

In the NBA, the Salary cap is more like a Pirate Code...it's a Guideline and with Mark Cuban the self proclaimed Captain Jack...let's just say, he has enough lute to not pay attention to the Salary Guidelines ;-)

2012/2013 - This team's three headed monster will consist of Dirk, Williams and HOWARD!!! The Mavs will become the Dynasty thorn that provide EPIC failure on some other over hyped organization ;-)

92bDad...that would be a ridiculous lineup. Throw in the Mavs bench and its just plain obsurd

Ya but there's a good chance a hard cap could be implemented.

This is what I fear a hard cap. I know it keeps teams from pulling another Miami, but at the same time it locks us in with little room for change.
