Default Extend or wait for player to become free agent?

Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics are discussing an extension. This is the last year of his contract. What's the benefit of signing a player to an extension as opposed to waiting for the player to become a free agent?

I see that the player will have more guaranteed money right now. If he gets injured he at least knows he'll be paid. However, if he has the best season of the career be may not make as much money as he otherwise would, and the team wins. I feel like this is a situation that benefits the team more than the player. There won't be any competition from other teams right now, and the contract will be based on what he's done thus far rather than what he does this season.

Anyway, any additional thoughts?
