None of our guards outside of Luka played well. Thank god we got Wood because it could possibly be an ugly season if those guys don't step up in the wake of Brunson leaving.

Hardy's big task is to find a way to contribute when his shot isn't falling. He looks like Beal when he is hot and looks awful when he is not. Balance and pacing.

Spencer back to the bench. That was quick, but it's the smart move IMO.

Who starts though? Hardy or Wood?

Hardy still hasn't shown much.

Doncic/Bullock/DFS/Wood/McGee is a nice mix of offense and defense, although you maybe need a small guard like Frank/Wright/Green to matchup defensively with the opposing jitterbug PGs while Doncic guards 2/3. I'd hope that would be Hardy, but he's super inconsistent offensively and has a LONG way to go to be even a moderately good defender.

SD/THJ/Green/Kleber/Powell wouldn't be an awful second unit

It?s not Wood according to his next tweet. Hardy, Frank, or Green?

I take it all with a grain of salt. Kidd said Dinwiddie would be the starter before camp, and he?s already changed his mind.

That second unit of Dinwiddie, Timmy, Wood, and Maxi could bury some teams in the regular season, but in the playoffs the second unit doesn?t matter much.

Sounds like it's gonna be Hardy, Frank, or Green.

https://twitter.com/sixfivelando/sta...54630033068032

Honestly, none of them are great options, but Hardy has the most upside and isn't afraid to shoot like Green and Frank. You'll need the offense to balance out the D with Bullock/DFS/McGee.

I guess the thing is you have Luka who can cover most of the mistakes of a young guy next to him.

I know he's popular pick, but I just haven't been impressed with Hardy.

He's seems more like a shot chucker in the THJ mode and defense is non-existent from him.

I guess if push came to shove I'd roll with Green because I think he can at least handle the ball a little and pass.

He's not going to create his own offense, but he might be great in the starting lineup getting this team transition points.

Plus, it would be awfully hard to score on this team early in games with Green, DFS, Bullock and McGee.

I think they could get by with him for the 1st 6-8 minutes to start off games and he can't be any worse than Powell who always got the start and didn't deliver much on either end of the floor.

If the shit idea of not keeping Luka and Wood together for every possible minute must exist. Then I am also on the Green S5 boat. Or just fn leave Spence.

Hardy is fine and I'm not worried about how he's playing right now. He's a rookie and should not be thrust into a starting role yet. He hasn't earned his stripes and isn't helping the team on defense. I don't see him starting any games in reg season unless there's a few injuries.

You can't have 4 guys who can't create their own offense to start games. We literally only have 3 guys on the roster that can do that...Luka, Spencer, and Hardy.

I agree about starting Wood, but they seem hell bent on that for now.

I don't think they need to start out games with a secondary ball handler as much as they do to end games.

Green is only buying you 6-8 minutes to start off games then he's going to the bench.

But in that early qtr you know with him you're going to get energy and defense. That is what's most important when you go back and watch Mavs games to start out.

DFS and Bullock will space the floor and Luka is most likely running PNR's with McGee anyway so I don't think starting Green hurts at all.

In the case of Hardy I would be worried about his man torching him to start off games and then his shot not falling to compound the situation.

I just view that as another THJ situation where a guy gets repeatedly lost on defense and if his shot not falling, he becomes liability on both ends of the floor.

Time to see what Green has and if he falters then maybe it's time to move him via trade and wipe our hands clean.

We already have three of the best defenders at their positions starting though. If Powell was still starting, then I'd say go with Green. But the Mavs need Hardy to not be a bust a lot more than Green who has already been bust. I want to be wrong about Green, but the preseason didn't enhance my perception of him. Hardy, on the other hand, can score 20 in a quarter if he gets hot. Frank and Green just simply don't have that ability.

I'm actually on board with just playing Hardy until he clicks. Could be rough for a while, but we're that desperate for a small guard who can shoot and create offense in the absence of Brunson. Plus any cap relief we are going to get should go to Wood.

If Hardy turns out, we don't miss Brunson and we could be damn good for a while. We keep Hardy on rookie deal for 3-4 years with Doncic getting max and Wood getting a sweet deal.

If Hardy isn't even showing signs of improvement by the TDL, we ask Indy for TJ McConnell or some other rental.

I like Green too, but he's never going to be the Brunson replacement that we need. He can play three positions, but none of them are PG.
THJ is a finisher but not a creator. Much more of a 2/3 than a 1/2
SD can do both, but is far too inconsistent/inefficient to be our second ball-handler without the gravity of someone like Luka next to him. Third guard? Fine. We just need a 2nd.
Frank is a hell of a defender and can be 3/D, but he has no PG tendencies.
Dorsey seems like a total flop
Wright IV seems like an incredible talent who can make plays and defend, but his potential is low at 5'11" and thus I doubt he even makes the roster past Friday

Wood can definitely create his own offense. Including going coast to coast off a rebound.

This is a good point, and might turn out to be true. We already know the closing lineup will have Dinwiddie in it. Also, Green isn?t exactly a stationary shooter on offense. He is a ball handler. Maybe not a good one.

Mavs may be interested in Campazzo? Boban replacement for Luka? Other than the highlight plays, I thought I remembered him sucking in Denver.

He was alright. I think I prefer Wright IV if you want a small PG

If you want a friend? Can?t get Boban back for a year so might as well get him a buddy but at 31 he?s both over the hill and a prospect. Kind of a rare combo that Mavs are good at acquiring a la Rigadeau

I sometimes wonder how smart our FO is. I mean, we've only been talking about adding a vet pg for how long now? I'd just wait to see what you can get through trades at this point. Lots of teams will be shedding players for the Wemby sweepstakes.

If you want a friend? Can?t get Boban back for a year so might as well get him a buddy but at 31 he?s both over the hill and a prospect. Kind of a rare combo that Mavs are good at acquiring a la Rigadeau
He would at least be a cheap buddy with no commitment and maintenance free in the Boban sort of way. It?s weird that they seemed to have no interest in Dragic, though.

Luka doesn't need a friend. This whole idea is over rated IMO. He's fully capable of making friends lol.

Literally the longest period between Mavs basketball that we will have until the ASB.

Happy that they opted into only three preseason games but I miss my Mavs.
