Default Mavs interested in Nene?

http://ken-berger.blogs.cbssports.co...38893/33584531

Quote:
One of the surest bets of the soon-to-begin 2011 NBA free-agent period is that Nene wants out of Denver. Where he winds up, and how, will be among the most intriguing storylines when the floodgates open around Dec. 9.

The Nuggets are operating under the firm belief that Nene will test the market as an unrestricted free agent, according to a person familiar with the team's thinking. Six teams have registered interest, the source said: Golden State, New Jersey, Indiana, Miami, Dallas and Houston.

Nene, the top unrestricted free agent on the market in the view of many team executives, will have a say over where he winds up -- though not as much as free agents did under the previous system since free agents can no longer get max deals when leaving their teams via sign-and-trades.

Nene, 29, has long coveted Miami and Dallas as landing spots, but would have to force his way to one of those teams via a sign-and-trade since both are well over the cap. And whereas LeBron James was able to get a max deal through a sign-and-trade when he went from Cleveland to Miami, Nene would have to settle for a four-year deal with 4.5 percent raises under the new system in such an arrangement.

If the Golden State used the amnesty provision on Andris Biedrins, the Warriors would have enough room to sign Nene outright for close to the max -- but again, that would be a four-year deal with non-Bird raises as opposed to the five-year deal with 7.5 percent raises he'd get by re-signing with Denver. There's no incentive under the new rules for Nene to push for a sign-and-trade as opposed to an outright signing with another team, unless there was a clear preference for a team that didn't have room to sign him.

There is incentive, however, for the Nuggets to accommodate his wishes in the hopes of getting significant assets back through a sign-and-trade. For the Nuggets, the most advantageous scenario would be if Nene wanted to be in Miami, Dallas or Houston enough to be willing to accept less money to get there.

The Nets would have room sign Nene to a max deal starting at 30 percent of the cap -- $17.4 million -- if they used amnesty on Travis Outlaw. The Pacers have enough room regardless, while the Rockets would need to work with the Nuggets on a sign-and-trade.
If we can get Nene for Haywood and little else, and still sign Chandler, I'd be all for that. I don't like the idea of replacing Chandler with Nene though, just because we know what Chandler gives us and how he fits with the team.

They probably wouldn't, but since there are teams with cap space that want Nene, he'll have leverage to force a sign-and-trade so the Nuggets get something in return. It just depends on whether the Nuggets could get a better offer than Haywood and Dojo or something similar. I doubt anything the Heat have to offer is that good unless they give up Bosh or something crazy like that. Haywood is better than anything they'd have at center without Nene, and the Nuggets will probably struggle to reach the salary minimum without Martin, JR Smith, Wilson Chandler, and Nene, so I don't think it's crazy to think they'd take Haywood.

Well Nene would have to threaten to leave them for nothing or Dojo to even have us sniff such a deal. I'd imagine it would also take a couple picks and cash to get the deal done.

From what I've heard, teams won't be able to use the Amnesty clause on players acquired via trade. And it wouldn't make sense for Denver to do that anyway, because they're under the cap as it is now, so unless we would be sending them something really significant along with Haywood, they really wouldn't have any incentive to make a trade like that.

Sounds a lot like what they used to say about our current hall of fame bound PG.

Yeah no kidding, it's not like we have a great shooting PG anyway. He'd be a great Kidd replacement. But it's moot he's not coming here.

If we take Nene, we probably have to take back one of their bad contracts

Though it would be nice to have Nene I do not see us giving up anyone Denver would want that is if it went the sign and trade route.

Again we're dealing mostly with agents, a lot of times, because of the contract agreed and destination agreed upon, the team losing the player actually does the player and his agent a favor by working on a sign and trade. You do the agent a favor now, he'll bank it and count it as an I owe you one....later on. You get a couple picks, cash and cap room, and an agent favor. But because the Mavs don't have the cap space to hold any leverage to get Nene here, it would be tough for Nene to say I will agree on signing with the Mavs using their MLE.....Denver would laugh at him and his agent....because there's no leverage, and even the PA would get pretty upset with Nene in turning down bigger contracts.
