OK, I'll go. Barkley again proved what an idiot he is when a couple weeks ago he insisted the Mavs were better than the Spurs. He is biased towards the big men, and thinks because we have Chandler and Haywood, we will take the Spurs.

But, when you are playing big minutes of small ball every game, with JJB and JET on the floor at the same time, you are not going to be able to take advantage of your big men.

Quote:
Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 32 points on 10-17 shooting from the field and despite the heroic effort, Nowitzki did not have enough help from his teammates on both ends of the floor as the Detroit Pistons scored at will and won the game, 103-89. The Dallas Mavericks were without Tyson Chandler for the second straight game due to illness and this was a game that they truly could have used him. This is the first time the Mavericks have lost six games in a row since February/March of 2000. Dallas lost five of their last six games by double digits. The Mavericks went 0-4 on their road-trip that took them to Indiana, San Antonio, Memphis and Detroit.

Dallas had won five straight against Detroit before today's game. With the loss, the Mavericks were unable to sweep the Pistons for the third consecutive year. Now, Detroit has won two of their last nine match-ups against Dallas. Dating back to 1999-2000, the Mavericks are now 16-of-24 against Detroit.

Detroit is now on a three game winning streak. Detroit hasn't won three in a row since April 6-9 and took advantage of the Mavericks' struggling defense. Coming in to today's game, Dallas had given up an average of 101.6 points during its skid after previously allowing 93.2 per game.

Mavs play the worst and most boring basketball right now in the entire NBA.
Their offense is so predictable and defense is so poor even with Chandler in.

Ah bull...he was probably correct at that time. The mavs were playing better than the spurs in what counts and that was defensively. Even today the mavs had haywood and mahinmi who are pale representations of what tyson brings us.

Keep dreaming. Gino and Parker will eat us up. Even with Chandler healthy, our guard play is a weakness that cannot be overcome by Chandler.

....nail on the head, this has been a problem from Day 1. JJB and Jet on the floor together is a mismatch waiting to happen,no matter how much effort both give, when you're getting posted up time after time, it's either a foul or a bucket. Yea, you can say, my 3 from either of Jet or JJb beats your low post 2, but the low post 2 is a much higher percentage.....RC has yet to figure it out, or brass is not giving him the tools to use at the 2 guard. Deshawn was a start, but brass still has not picked up on it.

32 points on 10-17 shooting (4-7 from downtown), 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal in 31 minutes (and on a leg-and-a-half...)

Welcome back, Dirk!!!

(now where's the rest of the team??)

Dude, I HATE the Spurs, can't stand them. But I have to be a realist about effective NBA guard play.

this team needs to make a trade to save our season. and if they don't want to do that, then it's time to do dirk a favor and move him to a contender, get some draft picks and young talent, blow the team up and start over. he deserves better than this. the dude comes off injury and scores 32 points and we still get blown out by double digits by a horrible pistons team? this team as it stands is going nowhere. dirk did his part this past summer, now it's time for you to do your part cuban. kidd needs to be playing backup minutes, if he even belongs in the league anymore. guys like cardinal and ajinca don't even need to be on the court. we need a pg and sf.

Actually, what counts is the the overall record - and San Antonio has been in front there since week 1. After that is point differential - which has also been in SA's lead.

Honestly, there is no shame in losing games without the 2 best offensive players on the team - one of whom is arguably the best in the league.

But, if you want to label this as the best team in Texas, let alone the league - they should be able to absorb the loss of Caron and still beat bad/mediocre teams (especially when Dirk is clicking). San Antonio has been ridiculously lucky when it comes to health this year, but they've lost each of their big 3 for stretches over the past few years and still managed to win more than they didn't.

That's actually the worst part of the box score. It'd be one thing to get pounded by Detroit if Dirk was struggling, working his way back into the lineup.

But to get bent over when Dirk is on his game...errrr....

Another sad aspect is that Terry can no longer give you a big game. He was playing pretty well to start the season and could give you a 20+ game in a pinch. 18 is about the max you are going to get, and that is on a good day.

It's easy to make an argument that the spurs were a better team at the time. But calling charles an idiot for not thinking so is over the top imo.

0 points for Kidd in 35 minutes and only 4 for Marion in 27 minutes just isn't going to get it done. This team has to make a move to get a very good 3 and at least a scoring/penetrating 1 or this thing might be over. It would be great to land a complete player at point guard, but the lack of scoring at SF is killing us and I don't know if the MBT has the ammo needed to make the kind of moves necessary to overcome the bad luck they have run into with the Butler injury.

I still have a little hope left, but this debacle didn't help at all.

that's a good point. i was watching the game where he said it and - at that time - you could argue the mavs were playing better ball. i just wouldn't agree that the spurs were a lesser team when they had a couple games in the standings versus virtually the same schedule.

What?? OK, too strong a word, but every time I hear Barkley on TNT, he spouts some wildly absolute and simplistic opinion that makes me think that.

Barkley is obsessed with big men, and puts too much confidence in them. I, on the other hand, put more weight on guards and SFs that can penetrate and score or dish.

Barkley is not without reason. Who is the last team to win a title without an elite big man? Probably '06 by a team I will not name, but they still had just barely past his prime Shaq.

Besides, that explanation doesn't really fit Chuck's reasoning. While Dirk is clearly playing at a higher level than Duncan at this stage in their respective careers, Duncan still fills the "traditional" big man role than anyone on this team.

I think Charles just saw a team which - at that time - was rolling through opposition, while San Antonio (while still winning) was eking by a few teams during that stretch.

BG and I are about to go live with the Mavericks Outsider Report, if you want to air your greivances give us a call at 214-317-4787.

Stream the show at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/mavericks-outsider-report.

We'll be following normal format, but with the game fresh in our minds, there will be some post-game venting, I'm sure.

He's not so much obsessed with a big man as he is defense. Now you need a good big to be good defensively...but I think he's more a believe in defense and rebounding than anything else.

I'm guessing we were meant to kick ass in the 00's decade. Now that the year turned to '11, we suck again!
