Welp, hopefully Orlando is in the market for a guard this summer...

Not a fan of the win, but it was nice to see Dirk (past) and Dennis (future) score 20 apiece.

The Mavs are garbage so it's puzzling why they win...until you see how awful the Magic are. Maurice Speights is shooting threes...that's all that needs to be said.

I would like to see DSJ drive more. I'm not sure if he isn't comfortable or Rick doesn't want him to or he is maintaining stamina or what.

I dunno, but it looks as if DSJ is fighting his natural inclination. Seems like he's playing off the ball more when he's paired up with Barea as well... Could be nagging injuries -- maybe Rick doesn't want him taking any chances around the hoop?

https://stats.nba.com/players/drives/?sort=DRIVES&dir=1
He's still 15th in drives per game it looks like. He shoots an abysmal % on drives and get's less than 1 fta per 12.7 drives according to nba stats(which is beyond retarded imo). I think if we had another shooter(a real one not these make shift 34% guys) on the floor things would open up more for him. He still gets by his man seemingly at will but then the whole defense collapses and he kicks it to someone it usually ends somehow in a wesley matthews iso or ends back in the hands of DSJ who has to create a long jumper for himself. I want him to develop a better floater game over the summer more than anything honestly. I'd like for him to work with jj or watch film of jj at keeping his body on a defender like jj is so good at and then lean in for a little 10 foot floater. Keeping the defender's body on him with his quickness would likely also help with getting foul calls. I think that would open his game up more as well because if a shot blocker has that floater on the mind it would give him that half step he may need to quickly finish at the rim.
I'd guess he doesn't drive more though because according to this, it may not be as effective as him creating his own shot or dumping it into the post because we just lack the requisite talent to make it more effective with him being a rookie and needing to refine those aspects of his game as well.

And if you take Lin and Fultz off the list for lack of games played you have to go all the way down to Lonzo Ball to find a worse fg% on drives(lonzo has 8.2 per game) than DSJ.

Judging a player by their FG% on certain shots their rookie year seems silly.
Dirk shot 20% from three. Maybe he should have stopped shooting and worked on his post game
Smith will be a great player off the drive and Ricks just experimenting. Maybe letting him watch one of the smartest and wiliest vets in the league do it up close.

If it seemed like I was judging him I wasn't. I love DSJ. I was just saying IMO the reason he isn't driving 4-5-6 times more a game is because it appears to not be very effective with a variety of factors being the reason. I wasn't saying he's not going to be effective eventually at driving, just saying there are prolly obvious reasons why it isn't effective now and why would he drive even more when the offense has success doing other things better, especially since this team seems to still think they can sneak into the playoffs.

DSJ, for all his athleticism, needs to learn the little things like varying his timing and release point, keeping his dribble, pull up jumper from 10ft(he has shown this somewhat) etc. that little guys like JJB and Steve Nash were so crafty at. Its going to take time. He already has really good court vision and as Bryan Wilson pointed out will have an easier time when he has better perimeter shooters and players surrounding him. Wes and Harrison are terrible at putting the ball on the floor and Barnes isnt much of a 3 point shooter anyway so teams scrambling can close hard and overplay
