Bernard vs the field
Would you rather the Mavs take him back or try and get someone else?
If the field netted the Mavs Oden or Carmichael.

Sounds like the odds are against us getting Sarge back.

I'd like Sarge back, but he's hardly irreplaceable. You can still get three points, three rebounds from a Thabeet or whoever.

Sarge has the potential to be better than that, and Carlisle obviously likes him (as evidenced by his 11 starts as a rookie).

I could see a youngish team picking him up. Bobcats, Wizards or Raptors
But I would like to see a bit more experience backing up our center position.
Although if he does clear waivers he should get some decent floor time
backing up Dalembert.

Pretty sure Wright will be backing up Dalembert.

We're looking at Dalembert/Wright at the center position... Who else is left on the market?
(because we're one injury away from Dirk playing heavy minutes at the 5)

Would the recently waived / amnestied Raptor Linas Kleiza be a good candidate?
He is coming off micro-fracture surgery but would be decent.

Sarge + Oden is still the most desirable outcome, to my mind, though it's more of a long shot now.

They had to make room for your boy Ellis... Do you think we would've been better off with Sarge instead??

Yup. Same situation as sarge. If he clears waivers, he'll be back in the form of at least a camp invite. I like his aggressiveness, just doesn't have the size.

James cleared waivers and will be resigned at the league minimum per Stein.

Mavs should have drafted Dieng. He and Big Sam would have given Mavs two big men who could move, block shots and make a 12 foot jumper.

Or Mason Plumlee. As evidenced by free agency pg's are a dime a dozen.

I'm honestly somewhat baffled that he cleared waivers. I mean, I get that he's nothing special, but a young(ish) big with defensive ability on a minimum salary that any team could have claimed?

Me too. I guess maybe it turned out to be a good thing that he couldn't catch and finish in the first summer league game? Or maybe his agent was lobbying behind the scenes for teams to let him stay? Whatever it was, glad to hear it.

I think it's hilarious that nobody claimed him. Mavs fretting all week long about other teams coveting their prized center. Then it turns out the rest of the league thinks he's a scrub not even worthy of a D-League roster spot.
And who can blame them? Bernard James is an undersized center who stands only 6'8.75" (without shoes). He's very inexperienced, and yet will turn 29 this season. He's too raw to contribute immediately, and too old to develop properly. As a project, there is very little upside to Bernard James.

You seem to really like pointing out his height (without shoes) while overlooking his 10/10/3 per-36 averages in his rookie year.

Not to mention that Howard blocked 3.9% of shots while out there and James blocked 5.0% for a block rating of 12.4 (vs. Howard's 7.5)

Stats from 9.9 minutes per game doesn't tell you a lot about a player. The only thing it tells you is that he wasn't good enough to earn more minutes.
What's also telling is that he played fewer minutes as the season went on. When the Mavs made their post All-Star Break surge, Bernard had 15 DNPs coach's decision, and barely averaged 4 minutes in the games he did play. I would be more optimistic if he finished his rookie season on an upward trend.

I don't like projecting PER36 numbers for a player who averaged only 9.9 minutes per game.

I tend to agree with this. But I do think you're a bit too dismissive. He's incredibly unlikely to ever even be a starter in this league, but his performance last season showed that he has some genuine defensive instincts and wasn't in completely over his head.
Also, in today's NBA, being ~6'9" and mobile at the center spot can oftentimes be viewed as a feature, not a bug.

Who's projecting? It's an objective characterization of how he actually performed while on the court last season, and far more relevant to evaluating his contractual value than his height, which might have been a reason not to draft him, but certainly isn't any kind of reason to discount his production as an NBA player.

Height measured with shoes are seldom accurate. Sometimes the shoes add an inch, other times it adds 2 inches. Only way to be consistent is to measure without shoes.
Jae Crowder's official height is listed at 6'6" which is laughable. His shoe-less height puts him at a shade under 6'4", which I think is far more consistent with what my eyes tell me about his height. My eyes tell me he was closer in height to Kidd than he was to Marion.

Who gives a shit about players heights without shoes?
They play with shoes on and that's that. So Sarge is 6'10.

And yet it's not a game played barefoot.
You could make the same argument that players are actually shorter if they played in wheelchairs which would be true, but again NO ONE plays NBA ball in a wheelchair and no one plays basketball without shoes PERIOD.
There is a reason that NBA/ESPN/ABC and EVERY OTHER sports outlet report player height with shoes.

He is a tad small. He is only 6'10" with shoes on... but he has a 7'3" wingspan. So him not being 7 foot is made up with having long arms. For comparison sake:
Shawn Bradley had a wingspan of 7'5"
Byron Mullins has a wingspan of 7'1"
Meyers Leonard has a wingspan of 7'3"
Tyson Chandler had a wingspan of 7'3"
Andrew Bogut has a wingspan of 7'3"
Joakim Noah has a wingspan of 7'1"
Shall I keep going? So he isn't as tall as some. But he has pretty much the same reach as most of the 7 footers in the league today......

Would the addition of James exclude the acquisition of Carmichael? Bc from what I heard, I really liked his potential as an athletic hustle defender.
