And yet they average 100 ppg. Again, not saying the Mavs played great defense but it wasn't the problem last night.

After the first five minutes, the Mavs bucked up and played great defense. They held Toronto to 84 points--only two more than the Spurs allowed the Lakers last night. The Mavs held Toronto to 38 points in the second half--only 1 more point than the 37 points in the second half that they gave up to OKC on Monday night.
The problem (and the only problem) was offense. You win very few games in the NBA when you score 76 points, including 13 in the first quarter and only 36 in the second half.
Here's what seemed to happen. In the first quarter, Toronto conceded the three-point shot, and Dallas repeatedly clanked open looks. Terry, Kidd, Stevenson and Butler went a combined 2-15 from three-point range, and only Terry actually hit a three-pointer (2-8). Mariion scored the only field goals in the first quarter on his post floaters.
After a decent run by the bench in the second quarter, the third quarter started the same as the first quarter. Pretty quickly Kidd and Butler started turning down open jump shots and tried to force the ball inside.
There wasn't any room and the offense totally broke down. Barea and Marion tried to force the ball inside, but Toronto had given up defending the outside shot and was inside waiting for them. Chandler had one big alley oop dunk and a tip in or so, but he didn't have any room to operate either.
Once again the second unit kept things close and to begin the fourth the Mavs brought in Terry to try to win the game. He shot them close, within three, but the Mavs missed three different tries at a three-point shot to tie the game and then Barbosa hit something like seven or eight in a row to put the game out of reach.
All along you had the feeling that Toronto was at the point of collapsing, if the Mavs could just get ahead. Their whole team, except Barbosa, unfortunately, looked afraid to shoot.
Lessons from this game:
1. The Mavs have to shoot open jump shots. Sooner or later they will go in and you'll win or they won't and you'll lose, but once the team stopped shooting with confidence, the whole offense fell apart.
2. Spacing is crucial. The Mavs don't have a big, effective post player (except maybe Dirk). If you don't make the opponent cover the three point line, then Marion, Chandler and Barea, when he drives, don't have room to operate inside.
3. The Mavs are really thin on scoring without Dirk. Let's hope Roddy comes back and helps--with his speed and elevatiion, he might be effective even when the other team has help defenders back.
|
Great analysis, just keep shooting, despite confidence. Terry's had a couple games slow 3 quarters, then lights it up in the 4th. I think Kidd and Caron's just got to keep chucking it up there.

Dirk just tweeted that he doesn't know if he'll be playing tomorrow or not. I wouldn't expect any real decision until late afternoon tomorrow.

i for one hope he doesn't play. if we lose we can blame it on dirk's absence, and if we somehow win it would make it that much more of a crushing defeat for spurs fans. plus another couple days off would be good for him.

We get the Spurs again @SA in two weeks. Sit him tomorrow, and if they win, we'll get em back then.

It's just an issue with dealing with the pain. So it's pretty much what it is, day-to-day.

Celtics lose key player to knee injury, lose to crappy team. Sounds familiar.
(Except theirs was on the road, but still.)

Theirs happened on night 2 of the b2b. Would've been a little more intriguing if it happened against Indy last night...they're saying it's his calf.

Sorry, I meant their injured star went down on the second night of the b2b
OKC was a win just based on guts and will power.
With Toronto, that was an experiment of sorts to figure out what would really work...with fatigue.
