a couple of monthes back, all that could be heard on the board about adding a player was about an inside force,a PF/C who can be the main rebounder on the team,if its kandi or alonzo or even D Fortson.
so my question is,is anything changed?i mean, now we have two good centers, one of them playes PF as well, both are fantastic shot blockers and great rebounder, they dont exactly have an inside game but i still think the're good enough to be called a force.
so what do we need?if we dont need an inside force than what to the mavs need?i'd say every player that comes on the roster right now is coming not to deal with a major problem but to add depth to our banch, thats about it,cant think of anything else.
did i missed out on anything?

the main thing we need is coming on Monday, which is a back up 2 guard that can score. With the exception of NVE, our bench is a defensive squad. They showed that in the 4th quarter of the Celtics game. We just need a bench that can score.

A clean bill of health for all Mavs. And right now the best possible addition that we can look to is Eddie.

A swingman that can handle the ball, shoot from the outside, run the floor, and play a little point forward. This is the type of guy the Mavs have been after for months. NOT a "banger". Only stupid fans that don't know shit want a banger. Look at what the Mavs have done: They tried to get Rashard Lewis. They tried to get Michael Redd. They drafted Sekularic. They signed the Wizard. They signed Raja Bell. They are in the process of getting Oggy. Rigadeau will be here soon. All these moves, and I haven't heard one whiff of interest in a banger type... except from foolish fans on this board. Brian Grant my ass.

exactly what i think.fans should have more faith in the squad we have than start proposing trades at the minute a player enters a slump.

madape, all we thought about on the offseason was a banger,zo and kandi, and even rashard is somewhat of a banger, adlist for us,but your right, right now if we insist on adding a player its gotta be a swingman that can run the floor and give any one of the three some precious rest time.

This topic is being obsolete since Mavs is a different (better) team than last season, it´s a different team (better) than the season oppening's, it´s different (better) than the streak's! (IMO). It has grown a lot and we are hardly noticing it. I think the Rigasomething move was wise.

our weeknesses are interior man to man defense, rebounding, and having to play our stars to much (mainly Findawg). Finley isn't getting any younger, we need a 3 man who can spell him off the bench, according to Nelson this is one aspect the Frenchmen is expected to help. That leaves the Banger/Enforcer guy who grabs offensive and defensive boards, plays hard nosed man to man D, and can run the floor. . . this will not only free up Dirk to play othe positions and allow him be mismatched defensively by being gaurded by a 3 man but will also provide a one, two finess versus brutal approach at the 4 slot as deemed appropriate by coach Nelson. We have lots of shooters, we have lots of ball handlers, we have lots of guys who can play several potitions, we have passers, we have 3 point specialists, we have shotblockers, what we dont have is gritty inside play . . . Raef dosn't qualify and Bradley is far more suited to the zone schemes and blocking shots on help defense rather than gaurding an interior force and battling an interior force for boards. The only problem is players that the above described are few and far between, aside from Elton Brand and a handfull of others few players like that are available. . .which means giving up a key cog to get another key cog. So the long answer to the question is we shouldn't change anything. We should stick with the guys we have for an entire season for the first time in recent memory, evaluate those players, and hope we get healthy sometime in between. After all why fix what isn't broke? If during the playoffs we get slowed down in the halfcourt game again, and get our hearts handed to us on a silver platter again in the second round, then i would be a lot more open to change. But we need to see what we have first which takes an entire season if not longer.

So our lineup can sometimes look like:

6'7" Rigau
6'7" Finley
7'0" Dirk
6'11" Raef
7'6" Bradley

Now THAT's some TALL BALL BABY!! And they can all shoot.

but none of them can play strong post man to man D, and battle any of the top rebounders in the league consitantly (save Dirk). Its obvious what the hole is. Every team has holes, the question is are our strengths strong enough to compensate for our weakness. And that my people is why we ride the current roster out.

FCC I'm just not sure I agree with you. Brand and Olowakandi are not chopped-liver and the last two times they have played they have been handled quite nicely. Who are the low-post guys torching us?

Common calls for personell change have pointed to the need for:

production and toughness in the paint
man on defense
rebounding

After doing some research, I've found that the Mavs are:
outscoring opponents by 2.3 in points in the paint (by 5.2 over last 10 games)
9th in blocks per game (3rd in block differential)
9th in steals
7th in opponent turnovers

and a miserable 23rd in rebound differential.

These stats don't directly address the man on defense question or the toughness in the paint question, but a healthy Najera should improve both those areas.

I imagine that with a healthy Najera, all of these stats will go up. If he gets us just 2 more rebounds a game than we are currently getting, we move up to about 15th in rebound differential, which is respectable. Since he averages 3.5 more boards than Raja and Popeye, and 1.5 more than Griffin and Walt, I imagine that's plausible.

I'm hoping that having a renewed lafrenz will help with rebounding although it didn't against the clips, but has seemed to in the prior 3 games. I'll have to do an analysis of the last three.

With LaFrenz playing well in the last 4 games (one without bradley) our differential is at 2.0. Not enough data for a long trend but in the right direction.

FineCubanCigar: I have 2 words for you about a gritty inside defender and rebounder - Eddie Najera.

This is my answer also. Najera, without question allows this team to shoot a better percentage from the field and more oppurtunities at the free throw line. With Najara and Bradley playing their A game. Teams can't drive to the basket for easy lay-ups or get easy 2-3ft jumpers. This combo I think will get the Mavs past LA and Sacto.
