Wow, GS just demolished Portland at Portland. Of course Memphis and L.A. had to lose. N.O. seems to have a tougher shot at the 6 seed with their schedule.

Yeah, only if you have a top-tier SG like Kobe - when your superstar is a forward or center, you need solid PG play... Which part of this concept are you not understanding?

Hornets are now the 6th seed. If they match the Blazers the rest of the way, that's who we're getting (unless we fall to the 4th).
Hornets remaining schedule:
Suns
@ Memphis
Jazz
@ Mavs
Blazers remaining schedule:
@ Jazz
Lakers
Memphis
@ Warriors

Karl: Nuggets Would Rather Face Mavs Than Thunder In Playoffs
Apr 08, 2011 1:57 AM EDT
If the Western Conference works out the way the Denver Nuggets want, they'll open the playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks.
After losing to the Nuggets on Wednesday night, the Mavericks are only one game ahead of the Thunder for the third seed in the West. As a division champion, the Thunder would have the tiebreaker, even though the Mavs won the season series.
The Mavericks, who have lost their last four games and are 8-9 since a 21-1 run, are slumping as the playoffs approach. Dallas has lost its last nine games against West playoff teams.
Karl would rather face Dallas because "Oklahoma City is athletic like we are and they have two great players," referring to the Thunder's Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.
Karl believes that the Mavericks are a less difficult team to defend than the Thunder because Dallas is a one dimensional offensive threat.

No you don't need this. You need 2 go to players, no matter what position they play. You can have a great 3 and a great 5 and mediocre PG play and still win a title. you can have 2 great bigs and mediocre pg play and still win a title

It's not a surprise Denver would rather face us, especially after OKC handled them on their home court a couple of days ago. Initially, i didn't want Denver, but i have a feeling their offense might struggle in the playoffs. If we were clicking at least offensively, i'd give us the upperhand, because Denver will struggle at times in crunch time. But obviously, right now, we're a big mess. If we can put it all together, or at least close to what we were when we played our best ball this season, i think we can beat them, and i have a feeling we will. (i'm actually laughing at myself being optimistic, but can't help it )

Who wouldn't want to face the MAvs.. Every western conference team does. It's just sucks and it's embarrassing to have every team around you clamoring to get a shot at you because you are looked at as the easy target.

If we go to #4, we can avenge losses to the last 2 teams to eliminate us from the playoffs en route to the WCF

Really frustrating that we crapped the bed lately, because now if LA loses 2 of the next 3, (and they play SA and OKC) and we win out, we'd pass them for the 2 seed. Could have had that 2 seed easy.

I really don't know who to root for between OKC and LA tomorrow - gotta root for OKC right? As poor as we have been recently, that we can still get the 2 seed is amazing.
that said, i might prefer to be in the Denver/SA bracket than the Portland/LA bracket. Or best of all, the NO/OKC bracket if by some miracle that's how it shakes down

from what i've seen, it's in our best interests to drop to the 4th seed. we can beat denver. i would rather face denver than portland in the 1st round. have you seen portland lately? so we beat denver and face the spurs in the second round while the blazers beat the lakers in the 2nd round. we get lucky against the spurs a-la 2006(better than facing the lakers at least) then we beat the blazers in the WCF and get to the finals. easy money.

We have to lose 2 of last 3 games to meet DEN in 1st and SAS in 2nd,
or we have to win all last 3 games to get HCA against LAL in 2nd.
First, DEN can't catch us. Better match-ups against SAS and it gives more time for Butler.
Second, meet POR in 1st (7 games battle) and play tired against LAL with Butler just come back.

Just curious: If a L on Wednesday would land us the Hornets in the first round, would you do it?
I would. I honestly think that Memphis matches up well against the Spurs and Portland does so against the Lakers. I said it earlier this season, but if the matchups would be DAL-NOH, SAS-MEM, LAL-POR and OKC-DEN I'd expect two lower seeds to advance. New Orleans is tied with Portland in the loss column and they own the Tiebreaker.

If we can't catch the Lakers in these last few games (which should still be our ultimate goal), then yes, I'd absolutely tank against the Hornets to play them in the first round. They don't scare me one bit without David West.
Denver and Portland are deadly right now - let the Lakers and Thunder get run ragged by those guys in the first round... Even if you beat the Blazers or Nugs, they'll sap your energy going into the second round.

I'm sure he'll be flattered.
I'm torn on whether I'd prefer the 2nd or 4th seed. The 2nd seed makes the first round probably a little easier and gives you home court advantage against the Lakers in the 2nd round (if we make it to that point). The 4th seed gives you a tough Denver team, however, San Antonio would be a much better matchup in the the 2nd round than the Lakers. Plus, the longer we could get out of the Lakers' way, the more likely it would be that Caron could be available.

we need to win tomorrow against houston and then see what happens with the lakers and spurs tuesday, and if the lakers win we should just tank the last game and hope OKC wins both and passes us. cause i'm not banking on the queens to knock off the lakers

It's likely to be their last game ever in Sacramento...I would think they want to leave on a high note.

If LA loses 1 more, and we win out, and OKC wins out, would it be
2 - Dallas
3 - OKC
4 - LA
Because that would be ideal.

yes, that's the best possible scenario
OKC holds the tiebreaker over LA?
edit: pretty sure LA has the tiebreaker, LA would have to lose both games for this to happen.

I hope I don't jinx things, but I believe the Spurs can beat the Lakers Tuesday night as long as Pops does not sit out his starters. The Spurs are 2-1 against the Lakers this season and we have won every game against the Rockets so far this season so things look good.

If there is a 3 way tie, it will be LA-DAL-OKC because the applicable tie breaker is "Better winning percentage in all games among the tied teams."
LA is 2-1 against Dal, 2-1 against LA (4-2)
Dal is 1-2 against LA, 2-1 against OKC (3-3)
OKC is 1-2 against LA, 1-2 against Dal (2-4)

The fact that Dallas isn't a division winner doesn't supersede this tiebreaker?

*nm, LA has the h2h. So only way we could get the 2 and OKC the 3 is for LA to lose both games.

according to http://www.nba.com/statistics/playoff_picture.html, ties are broken by regular season record and then "ties for playoff positions (including division winners) will be broken utilizing the criteria set forth... below"
and the first tiebreaker is better winning percentage amongst tied teams.
nothing in the rules says anything about division leaders, except that 3 of the top 4 seeds will be the division leaders regardless of record (but won't necessarily have HCA if they face a team with a better record)

Are they really going to move to Anaheim? Three teams in Southern California just seems obnoxious. Oh wait, it's california... Everyone will have to put down their beer bongs and their one-hitters long enough before anyone even notices. Despicable place.

Interesting thing about that chart i made - it shows that 9 out of 27 scenarios allow Dallas to get the 2 seed if we win out and LA loses either to SAC or SA

I did see that, but above that it says:
Quote:
TIEBREAKER BASIS:
(-) Tie breaker not needed (better overall winning percentage)
(1) Division leader wins tie from team not leading a division
(2) Head-to-head won-lost percentage
(3) Division won-lost percentage
(4) Conference won-lost percentage
(5) W-L Percentage vs. Playoff teams, own conference
(6) W-L Percentage vs. Playoff teams, other conference
(7) Net Points, all games
|
which seems to contradict what it says below. So I'm not really sure what to believe.
