D2K, do you really believe it's a free shot? I'm sure there would no shame in losing to the LakeShow, but I doubt that everyone rules us out.

The most vocal NBA commentator in the land just picked us to win, so you're certainly right.

Yep. Well, Pasadena, which is about 25 minutes out. Court from Monday-Thursday.
Assuming I can find time to break away one night, I'll be at either Game 1 or 2 if I can procure tickets. Is Game 2 Wednesday?

Tonight was the first time I've ever heard Charles Barkley make a good point regarding the actual intricacies of the game. Kenny kept going off about how we wouldn't be able to rebound and all he kept saying was "Who's going to guard Dirk?" Solid point. Does anyone else see a problem with running a JJ/Kidd, Marion, Dirk, Tyson, Haywood lineup out their when their 3 bigs are in? It'd negate their rebounding and we could just go with downscreens by Tyson and Haywood then have them crash class off of Dirk's shots.

Not so sure if playing new lineups is a good idea. It reeks of gimmicky desperation.

I believe that coming into this series they carried the weight of past playoff failures despite the fact that most of them weren't around for the bulk of them. That weight has been lifted since nobody expects us to beat LA. Dirk himself played that card in the TNT post game interview.
I'm not buying the Barkley prediction. He likes us and wanted to take the weekend to talk himself into it then, when Kenny pressed him, he said what the hell. I doubt he'd bet on us to win the series.

I also heard some dumbass in Porkland saying "DIRK!! You are going to get swept by the Lakers!!!" I don't know if anyone else heard it or not but it was during Dirks parade to the freethrow line near the end.
On another note, I am glad to get that Portland series done with, I hated the site of all those hipsters in one building acting like they enjoyed basketball.

Just so you know, the Lakers never run their three bigs at the same time. Kenny Smith is really ignorant about the NBA, and his comments should always be disregarded.

Wow. Definitely the best sports night of my life. Better than Game 7 in SA for me. What a night.
First of all, I became a Mavs fan years ago the second that Dirk hit that shot over Pippen to ice game 7 against the Blazers. I was a kid who wasn't that into watching sports, and I had never rooted for the Blazers because of their thug image. My dad would always have games on and I'd watch if I was bored. Dirk made me love sports the second he hit that shot. It was all there. The up and coming star, the best friend point guard, hitting a game 7 icer over his own childhood hero. Awesome. I knew I was really becoming a fan when I started getting really pissed off if the Mavs missed a shot, or if their opponent hit one. MFFL instantly.
So, obviously, tonight was a big deal for me. The crowed was insane before the game, during the 1st quarter and during the 4th when they were coming back (up until the JJB 3 pointer I think). Other than that, the Mavs did an excellent job taking away the Blazers biggest advantage IMO.
Tonight reminded me of why I love this team as much as I do. Dirk is, and always will by, my favorite athlete/role model of all time. Dirk was flat out amazing tonight. I can't express how much joy I got hearing people groan as Dirks shot was flying towards the basket. Instant 2-3 points. And talk about automatic, those last (6?) FTs to ice the game were cold fucking blooded.
Terry. GOD DAMN SON! He barks a lot but tonight he was all bite. He was not going to let the Mavs lose this game. I don't think his shots even hit the net. I also thought he did a fantastic job on defense.
IMO, besides Dirk carrying the team, the shots by Kidd, Jet and JJB closed the deal and the series. You could imagine how sick I was feeling watching the Blazers claw their way back to within 1. The atmosphere was destroying me... but man those shots were HUGE. Felt soooo good.
As ignorant as Blazer fans are, by the way, they were very nice during the game and even after, either ignoring the fact that I was decked out in Mavs gear or just giving me a little bit of a hard time. At the end of the game they were shaking their head at the players, not the Mavs or the refs. That was good to see. Apparently there were some BEAT LA chants going around too.
My mind is racing right now so I'm sure I missed a lot of what I was going to say, but one last story. I was taking the Max (our public transportation system) back towards my friends house in Portland and we were in two of those seats that directly face two other seats, and this other gentlemen and this very attractive women (early 30s maybe?) came up and sat across from us and he had on a Mavs jacket. We started talking and apparently they work on the Mavs plane (shes a flight attendant, he seemed like a pilot type but I never found out for sure). Anyway she told me lots of stories about Dirk and the gang... mainly that Dirk and Kidd and Cuban especially are extremely nice. She also asked if she wanted me to pass anything on to Dirk and I just asked her to say that I'm his biggest fan in the Northwest and awesome job. She said she would absolutely do that, so that capped the night for me.
oh and.. Beat LA.

Not a bad seat. I've only been to one playoff game myself (sidenote: Dirk scored 50 in that game), and I took full advantage of being in the back row of the upper deck. After standing the entire game without some bozo telling me to sit down, I started banging on the thin metal back wall as Dirk was taking over the fourth. Got people in the next few sections to start doing it too.

For the people complaining about Peja and JJ staying in too long in the fourth...
I can live with that if it keeps Rick from going with the 3 guard lineup.
Good thing about Peja tonight. They put him on Roy a lot, and his length really bothered him. He wasn't killing the Mavs out there, even if he wasn't great.
Peja/JJ/Kidd > Terry/JJ/Kidd

What a great game. Nice to see the Mavs playing the best defense that I've ever seen them play anyway. No answer for Uber. Uber plus great D will receive golden rewards.

Barkley hasn't seen the last couple of games. Odom has held Dirk virtually scoreless in the last couple of 4th quarters. If Dirk disappears in the 4th during this series, look for the Candyman.
On a sidenote, congrats on the road win. I thought the Mavs would win the series in 7...didn't think the Mavs could win in Portland.

Odom is tall enough and athletic enough, and has a huge wingspan -- so he can give Dirk some fits............just like Marion is tall enough and athletic enough, and has a huge wingspan -- and can give Kobe fits.
Don't kid yourself into thinking that Kobe and Dirk won't get theirs though.

I like who's defending Dirk the entire time.

I've wanted to see this lineup at least a few times this years. I think it would be an interesting thing to throw out there for a couple of minutes here and there.

Just commenting on Barkley's "nobody can guard Dirk".
Dirk's a HoF'er for sure, he'll get his...hopefully in the first 3 quarters.
Odom has a decent chance of defending him in the 4th.
I'm not delusional...Marion bothers Kobe, Lamar bothers Dirk. But both are great players and will get theirs, you just gotta limit them....especially in the 4th.

Dirk scored 25, 27 and 14 against the Lakers this season (the 14 happened when Dirk was still recovering from injury...)
He's going to eat Odom alive.

Dirk's been good against the Lakers the past couple of years. His shooting percentages are ever so slightly off (around 45-46%) mostly because he went 1-7 on threes this year against the Lakers. He gets to the line alot against the Lakers and he rebounds better against the Lakers than against any other opponent.

Of course Dirk's going to get his...usually it comes in Quarters 1 to 3.
The key is stopping Dirk in the 4th.
As with all Laker/Mavericks games, it usually comes down to the 4th quarter. The teams go toe to toe for 3 quarters and then the game is decided in the 4th.
Odom's defense on Dirk has been great in the 4th quarters this year. If Lamar can keep Dirk passing off to the other guys, mission accomplished.
In the 2 Laker wins this year, Dirk was stopped in the 4th quarter (when Odom was defending him) and other guys had to step up.

I'm not worried about Dirk in the 4th quarter. He's one of the most prolific and most efficient 4th quarter and late game scorers in the NBA.
