A dumb question... how is 'Nowitzki' corretly pronounced? Is the 'w' sounded like a 'v', (which I believe is correct) or, like I hear more and more commentators saying recently, is the 'w' sounded like a 'w'?

For all idiot announcers: Just call him Dirk. Until there is another player named Dirk in the league this will uniquely identify him.

maringa, in German, W are pronounced as V, and V are pronounced as F. So, Nowitzki is NoVitzki and Volkswagon is FolksVagon.

I'm no German, but I believe it should be Deerk. But hell if I'm going to call him that.

Well i think the W in Nowitzki is to pronounce like the V in Mavericks.
And Dirk is pronounced in multiple ways:
grammatically it sounds like Deerk; but most Germans don´t speak this way.
We say something like Dürk; as in Überman. It´s a kind of a mixture.
I cannot find the right letters to write it in english.

I was listening to an interview with Dirk on the Ticket a year or so ago when this question was asked. Dirk said the w was prononced as a w...so all the announcers who say it as a V are wrong.
No-witz-kee
In the typical laid back demeanor that is our wunderkund, he also said "I don't care how anyone says it..."

Generall W is pronounced as V, but in names I think it can be W.
Maybe he should change his last name to Smith

The W in Nowitzki is pronounced exactly like the one in Wunderkind. Dirk is pronounced like dear, just with a shorter "ea". So, if you think "Dear Wunderkind", you're on your way.
