Free Agents Thoughts
Instead of starting a separate thread for every single free agent news... and no this doesn't have to be an official one. But it would be nice to just lump a line or two about a particular player instead of just adding a new topic. Anyway... want Rashard Lewis? NOH just amnestied him.

I'm not sure if that's an actual amnesty move, just a waiver move.
Edit: Stein confirmed this, he did indeed have June 30 buyout deadline so decision had to come today. Hornets pay out $13.7 mil but save $8+ mil

Oh you are right. he got waived not amnestied. I'm assuming that takes the Mavs out of the equation then.

Morey is apparently making Asik a priority. There's a report out that they're going to offer him 8 Mil annually.

Considering they traded away Dalembert and are looking to move Scola, that news doesn't shock me.

Is it just me or do we only have room for Deron?
20.9 for Dirk
8.6 for Marion (assuming Haywood is waived)
3.1 for Stackhouse
2.3 for Beaubois
1.3 for Jones
1.0 for Cunningham
0.9 for Wright
2.0 mill (0.4 x 5 unfilled spots) for being five players under the 12 minimum
--------------------------
40mill AFTER we renounce all rights to our free agents and all exceptions.
That leaves only about 18mill to play with and only 7 guys on the roster. DWill alone will be asking around 18.

Yep. It seems to me like the max values are way, way too high for this sort of team structure. Or, of course, the team totals way, way too low.

DWill is about 17.2.
They'll be able to move other assets if they need to. Fish said on Twitter a few minutes ago that the Mavs are in talks to move Carter if DWill signs with us.

You forgot Carter or you figured him to be the ghost of Stack.

Shouldnt the salary cap move up this year too? from 58? I know we dont have specific numbers but that should help create a little more space

It's not out of the question that it goes up some. By all accounts the league had a really good season.

Nash is apparently looking for something in the range of 12-15 million.
Dragic is looking for something in the 10 million range, with assurances that he'll be the starter.

Caplan says seven teams called Ian at midnight and the Mavs weren't one.
I've been operating under the assumption that he would be back, but now that I think about it, he'd have to wait around on the Mavs to sign everyone else before they'd be willing to ink his deal. That's probably not going to happen with a young player that's never had a nice contract.
However, I can see a scenario where the Mavs work out a SnT of some sort.

I just have to put a big "SCOREBOARD" on those I argued with in the summer of 2004, who thought 10MM a year for Nash was crazy (Cuban included). I can fondly remember predicting: Not only will will he serve this contract, he will get another one. And now he's naming his price for a third.
Lesson learned: Don't think you're too smart, Mark Cuban.

Yeah, if thats the case then deflation should bring the cap down....dammi sorry DW but may have to settle for Nash at 12 mil to stay under the cap.

Assuming DWill works out this could very well mean Brendan Wright as our starting center...unless there is some very creative moves by MBT

Faced with the possibility of losing Ray Allen, the Boston Celtics are pursuing Dallas Mavericks free-agent guard Jason Terry, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Celtics are preparing themselves for the possible loss of Allen, and began the process of recruiting Terry after midnight ET Saturday, league sources said.
The Mavericks still have interest in re-signing Terry. The Los Angeles Clippers also have emerged as suitors, sources said. The Celtics also have interest in Los Angeles Clippers free agent guard Nick Young, sources said.
Terry, 34, averaged 15 points for the Mavericks this season.

Free agent thoughts...
Building a team in free agency under these cap conditions is not going to work. Unless you have 3 stars willing to take major pay cuts in order to play together which the mavs don't have. It's teams like the Thunder that drafted all their guys and they are still affordable that can field a contender.

Is it really a better move to add Deron for 18 or Dragic 10& Asik 8? We might actually be better off without DWill. I know I'll get flamed but my gut tells me this guy ain't worth a max deal.
In this cap situation I believe only the elite of the elite should get max deals. Dirk, Lebron, Durant, etc.. Deron while a good player is not going to carry a team. And if a guy takes a third of your salary shouldn't he be able too?

Is anyone interested in Brandon Roy? supposedly his knee blood platlet regeneration therapy is working pretty well.

Probably Cubans biggest weakness.

I'm really not too surprised to hear about Mahinmi. He needed to take a big step forward this season, but STILL hasn't learned not to foul. That is why drafting Bernard James looks like a good insurance move. Mavs after Przbilla and Thabeet though? Underwhelmed.

Having retired from the NBA for a year... Took Jordan a year to get back to his old self... Michael freaking Jordan! You want a guy with no cartilage in his knees after a year off?
I say no. Hell no.

Center is an overrated position IMO. You need some bangers down there no doubt but you dont need an allstar.

The question of Deron's max-worthiness is legitimate. But to question it by holding it up against Dragic at 10 and Asik at 8 as a loftier ideal of money well spent doesn't make any sense.

Im assuming you're considering that the Thunder and Heat don't have great centers, but IMO that is exactly how you beat them. When Hibbert was on against the Heat it nearly turned the series in their favor...well actually did for a few games there.
There is no "overrated" position in the NBA as far as I'm concerned.

I agree, the towel spinner position is very much underrated imo.

Even if we accept this as true, it's still not easy to find or sign those "bangers". Asik got offered 8Mil this morning.
