Come on.

I like it. Finley has a lot more cred than rolando, Harper or Davis for goodness sakes. But it says that the Mavs through it all are family, I like it and I expect someone looking for a long time gig would like it as well.

Dirk, jet, Finley...maybe nashie but I don't think so...iffie on him.
Jkiddo probably after fin. Where does Carlisle go?

Love Finely, hate that he stuck it to Cuban/Mavs fans by going to the Spurs to win a ring... For me, it's Dirk, Kidd, Terry, Nash, Finely.
Kidd was drafted here, came back and won his ring here... A Hall of Fame redemption story that deserves to hang in the rafters.
Terry has been hot & cold -- mostly cold during the playoffs -- but he carried this team at the very end of our championship run after Dirk had exhausted every last drop... Dirk : Frodo :: Terry : Sam (or Simon of Cyrene, whatever...)
Nash wins the tie-breaker over Fin because of his chemistry with Dirk and the fact that he went to San Antonio (yeah, I'm shallow!)

It's an interesting question. I put it, after Dirk, as Finley then Terry then Nash.

Dirk
Kidd
Jet
Are in a different class. Championship.
Nash, Fin, NVE were nice and so...but at the end of the day they did pretty much nothing relevant. Fin was a lone star and padded his stats for most of his MAV career. That's all. And both failed badly in the playoffs when it counted... They are right there with Jho.

I think hell just froze over - I actually agree with markus1234 about something...
I was a Nick the Quick fan too.

Now we know why the Nets front office is a joke. If Deron stays in Brooklyn for a "championship" it will be the worst decision he's made.

You would think they have some kind of game plan to get him either when he walks or through trade, maybe not though lol. Based on these contracts it looks like they don't even want him.

NVE doesn't belong in this conversation. If you place Kidd above Fin, then you are a post milineum Mavs fan. Kidd was the Antichrist after that first year. Comparing Fin and Nash to JHo is about as retarded as it gets.

Based on his age, isn't it likely that Deron grew up a Finley fan? Nothing touches your heart like a childhood hero. We were both in our 50's when I met Billy Sims, but that meant more to me than any of the senators, governors or CEO's.
As for the jersey retirement deal, Jet is a no brainer, but no one else is. Fin gets extra points for being the anchor when Dirk and Nash were too young to carry the load. I think his attitude about how to be a pro was a huge influence on both those guys. Not his fault he left. The only other guy on my list is Derrick Harper. Nash abandoned us. If he wants a banner, he'll have to come back and win a ring. Kidd's time here was too short, but if he stays and there is another championship, he's a shoo-in.

I am MAVS fan since Detlef Schrempf.
Josh reached the finals and Nash/Fin looked like trash vs. Jackson, Peja and Bibby. To me, that's pretty much even.

It' not idiotic. I appreciate Finley but he won his ring with the San Antonio Spurs. Nash tried to do the same thing with the Suns (obviously it didn't work out). Cuban proved that neither of them were necessary to win a championship for the Mavericks. It DID take Jason Kidd though. Bring up a "who was a more valuable to the Mavericks" conversation to anyone that ISN'T a biased Mavs fan and Jason Kidd will win 1000 times out of 1000 over Finley.
Write a story about the greatest Mavericks team ever (the championship team) and it will feature Kidd, Terry, Marion, Dirk and Chandler. No mention of Finley.
Finley was important to help pull us out of mediocrity. But Mark Cuban and Dirk had just a LITTLE bit more to do with that than Michael Finley. Finley was a part of it though.
I would put Finley up there with Terry when it come to importance, but Jason Kidd's name DOES belong in the conversation. Because of that, wouldn't it be "idiotic" to suggest that it's idiotic? To me it's completely legit to make Kidd argument.

The Finley Fascination is like the Kennedy Assassination - they know who did it, but they just can't figure out why.

So in between Detlef and Dirk how much attention did you pay? Do you really think Josh Howard has ever been brought up as a potential retired jersey? Do you think they would ever send him as an ambassador?

I don't like that they're second, either. But it's not a huge deal. I certainly wouldn't say it hurts them "a lot." That's extreme.

Are they really second though? It's not like Deron doesn't have a firm idea of what Brooklyn is doing. Finley has to be a surprise, so it's going to give him more to think about.
Either way, I think it's tedious to fret about being first or second to give the pitch. If you're pitch is the best and most convincing, it really doesn't matter when you offer it.

Yeah, it's ridiculous to fret about being the second pitch. That just means our pitch will be the fresh one in the mind.

I'll have to disagree with you on the last point. I've seen studies showing that, in various contexts, getting the "last" word before a decisionmaker can have a more than negligible influence on the outcome. Of course, that doesn't mean it affects the outcome in every case.
It is impossible to say who truly gets the last word, since they can still talk to him after. But this will be the most important meeting for each team, and I do think it leaves the Mavs at a slight disadvantage that the Nets get to go after them.
Again, not a huge deal, but if I were picking things, I would give the Mavs the second of the two in-person, formal meetings.

You've got it backwards. We're the first pitch. That's what I'm "fretting" (way too strong a word) about. I absolutely agree with what you just said, which is why I'd prefer to be second.

Anyone else somewhat bothered by the fact that Cuban wont be there for the pitch?
I know that he could still talk to him thru a video conf call, etc., but I personally think it is peculiar he wont be there seeing that the MBT has been operating to clear cap space for this opportunity since they won the title.

I was bothered quite a bit at first, and still am a little bit. But Prokhorov won't be there either, so if Deron's gonna hold that against the Mavs, he'll have to hold it against both clubs.

I'll also take Cubans knowledge of the game over Prokhorov.

I'm seriously just blown away that the Nets still think there's some way they can get Dwight before Deron's decision. It will be one of the most shocking things I've ever seen in sports if they can turn their current assets into Dwight Howard in the next 3-4 days.
