If it means paying Ellis to get Dwight, my opinion of Monta goes up.

The draft next year looks plausible. You got Luke Hancock, Marcus Smart, and Andrew Wiggins to possibly make it a stronger draft. I'd accept this deal. That way front office can truly have a layout cap scenarios right when July hits.

Ellis for anything more than 5mill is a tragedy and an albatross. Dude is one of the most overrated players in the league.
Collison / Ellis / Calderon
eFG%
50.4% / 44.8% / 56.9%
TS%
57.5% (9th of 82 for PGs)/ 49.3% (63rd of 82) / 61.6% (1st of 82)
PER (top 30 are starting-caliber. 31-80 are 2nd/third string material)
16.37 (25th) / 16.30 (27th) / 18.80 (6th)
Pass rating
7.1 / 8.1 / 15.0
Assist to Bad pass ratio (higher the better)
3.9 / 3.0 / 5.6
Assist ratio (percentage of possessions that the player has the ball that end in an assist. higher the better)
29.0% (28th) / 21.1% (67th) / 39.4% (6th)
3pt %
35.3% (career 36.0%) / 28.7% (career 31.8%) / 42.9% (career 39.9%)
When you compare Collison and Ellis you see that Collison is better at everything except hands rating (a minuscule number of TOs separate them), but both are far inferior to Calderon. Calderon is a top-10 PG in the league. Collison and Ellis are both mostly rated between worst starters and average backups. We don't need to have a top-10 player at every position, but building our off-season plans on downgrading Collison to Ellis is nonsensical. If 30% from three is a threat that needs to be defended and 38% is a shooter you'd go to for points, neither has a good enough jumper from deep to be depended on and only Collison can even threaten a three enough to keep a defender from packing the paint.
Of those three, only Calderon makes sense to go after. His defense is suspect, but he can pass, create offense and not only threaten the three, but consistently make them. If CP3 goes elsewhere, you have to call up Calderon first. What he costs you in defense, he more than makes up for in every other skill you want from a PG and I personally think that Calderon/Dirk/Howard make a better, more balanced team than CP3/Dirk/scrappy center or Sarge

I'd say it knocks our chances from 100% down to about 100%.

Paul ain't coming to Dallas. Mavs better look elsewhere before they end up with Mike James again.
But come August Cuban will try to sell the fans on the new "new" two year plan.

If he was on our team last season, then I guarantee you he would have played a lot of pg.

The think about Manta that I find worrisome is his attitude. He has a ton of ability.... but Curry (or was it Lee?) said that the culture in GS changed when Ellis was no longer with the team last year.
And in Milwaukee he and Larry Sanders got into it. Sanders wanted to win and Ellis was more concerned about himself and both got into it in the lockerroom.

Still think we have a chance to at least negotiate with Chris Paul. Maybe the Clippers will invest in Eric Bledsoe to stay with Doc(if this deal goes down). Oh yeah, it also still needs the league approval I believe.

No way CP3 leaves LA if/when Doc goes there. Why would he leave?

Well, Stein just tweeted the news for Longhorn.
ESPNSteinLine
@ESPNSteinLine
Sources tell ESPN that Clips believe CP3 will soon notify them that deal w/Doc Rivers' clinches his signature on new five-year max deal July 1
2013-06-23
Maybe now Cuban will view the draft as important.

The main hope would be if Stern steps in by rejecting this side business again revolving around a coach. I'd appreciate Stern for it. How ironic.

So Dwight/Ellis is our next best bet? Hmm...

Dirk said we will be able to gauge the success of whether FO's plan was a good one or not based on this summer. Not looking good so far.

Could we afford Calderon/Ellis, Iggy, and Dwight on the team? That has to be a plan B.

Nope.
Calderon and Igoudala would work... Or maybe Calderon and Howard, if Calderon takes less money than he's projected to... But not all three - Ellis and Iggy are going to be near-max contracts.

If CP3 does announce that he's staying with the Clippers, then at least he's doing us the favor of taking himself off the market before the draft... Plus, we'll be able to focus solely on Dwight Howard when July 1st rolls around - if he rejects us, then we can move on to Plan B without hesitation.

@ESPNSteinLine
To reiterate: All indications are NBA WILL approve LAC deal for Doc Rivers. But all indications also are any KG-to-Clips trade gets blocked
@ESPNSteinLine
And here's why: Teams can't put players in transaction for a coach. NBA sees KG being dealt to Clips, now or later, as part of same Doc deal

With CP3 off the market, I would rather burn it down to the ground than pay Ellis.

The Mavs didn't get screwed - nothing was lost, other than the slim opportunity to sign Chris Paul... If he had dragged this out for several weeks, then it would've been a different story.

One thing about Ellis. He wasn't given his true PG role while playing with the Bucks and Warriors. If Cuban takes a chance with him.. Carlisle could be the help in adjusting his game. Which could also intrigue Dwight to sign here. Not to mention Dwight would have a good backup like Bernard James. I like Calderon, but the main reason leaning towards Ellis would be youngness.

What a terrible way to look over how old KG will make this team. As for Rondo, I wouldn't be willing to gamble on his attitude and ACL recovery.

Yeah, how dare we try to improve the team with our cap space after we don't sign Dwight and CP3. I think the Celtics are sellers right now and we should be big-time buyers, even if it costs us a bench player.

Chris Paul seemed more likely to stay than Dwight anyway. Doc Rivers coming just strengthens his excuse when really I have no doubt all he cared about was the extra cash.
Dwight's agent will no doubt advise him to do the same. It will be between LA, Houson, and ourselves. Kind of a bummer.
Already think plan B is going to be the one we will be looking at. Mind you, there are several quality options both to fill the point and center spots. Let's hope Nellie did his homework. Any combination of Calderon/Jack + Pekovic/Jefferson/Cousins/Bynum would put us back into the mid tier playoff bracket in the West. And if we overachieved maybe in the upper tier.

Apparently they've been shopping him and he wants the max from a team. The Kings are a mess so maybe new scenery and a great coach (RC) can smack some sense into the kid. He's extremely talented and I'll take his attitude over Bynum's attitude+injury trouble.

Boston is rebuilding around Rondo. No way we land Rondo. Maybe Pierce/KG.
#13/Marion for KG.
Pierce for future 1st.
This gives Dirk some weapons for next year. Then rebuild with serious powder with a discounted Dirk contract in 2015.

I'd gladly take Pierce to fill in the SF spot. Now with KG. It would be all in next 2 seasons playoff wise. But thinking about Pierce, Dirk, and KG making a run together would be about hunger towards the championship right away.

Id love a second unit that features Carter and Nate Robinson. Also Splitter or Pek as our starting center wouldn't hurt.

He makes decent passes and cuts to the basket (good basketball IQ). Also is at least not going to get you pounded down low as he can hold his ground.
He makes sense for the right contract and certainly not someone I'd easily dismiss because of a meh finals.
