We really need McGee to get healthy soon. Zaza/Powell/McGee could potentially be an excellent rotation at the 5.

Team just lacks a defensive stopper until Matthews gets into shape. And even then, the team doesn't really have much defensive talent. Waiting for McGee to save the day seems optimistic at best.

Carlisle said it'll be at the least December before we see Mcgee

Hard to judge this team with all the injuries/minute restrictions. If we don't go mysteriously cold in the 3rd quarter we probably have a chance to win this game. Al Jefferson going 15-18 didn't help. But I kinda had a feeling this would be a trap gaming coming into it. We're gonna look back at this game in 3 weeks when our record is like 10-5, and say "wow, imagine if we won that game against the Hornets"... trust me.

Aside from Powell team looked awfully slow and unatletic tonight. No rim protection. No one to check SF defensively till Parsons and Wes are back in full and even then we lack perimeter athleticism. Anderson not ready till next season at earliest. Wonder if RC finds a way to get Evans on the court in the coming games.
We desperately need a rim protector. Only have Devin, Felton & Anderson as trade bait. Powell becoming untouchable- I hope. Unless we get a legit starter back. Problem is no one is just giving rim protecting, rebounding centers away. Probably don't have the pieces to nab Noah. Wonder how soon Hibbert comes available if the Lakers continue to struggle.

Good news is that developing young guys like Powell is exactly what this team needs to be doing early on. I'd like to see Anderson get more of a chance since the team could use his energy and defense.

Flashback to offseason when I thought the Blazers would be worse than the mavs. Feelsbadman.
Charlotte isn't a bad team I like a lot of their pieces. They could squeak into EC playoffs. It still sucks to know your team got blown out by them

I still don't understand the reason for Mejri being on this team. We have had absolutely no defensive presence on the interior and he is the only available shot blocker on the team. What Jefferson did last night will be the norm for any offensive big we face going forward.
The purpose of a 3rd string center is to play if the #1 or #2 options are unavailable. At 29 he isn't exactly someone we want/need to develop and right now I'd say he is 4th or 5th on the depth chart.
At least play the dude and see what he brings. If he fails miserably then go shopping for a useful 3rd option.

Balance in scoring has to be figured out. Like who else can step up to the plate and lead in points. Dirk will get his and possibly score most some games. But we have to figure out who has the hot hand and stick with it a whole game than guessing.

The defense against Jefferson was embarrassing. It reminded me of Shawn Bradley trying to defend Shaq. Mate that with ice cold shooting and we can expect a very long season. Yet we never double teamed him. Maybe this has to do with the fact that none of the starters have ever played together, so maybe the double team rotations have not been worked out.
I can excuse this as a training camp loss, as with all the injuries, none of these guys have had a chance to even practice together. But we can't keep losing to bad teams. There is no excuse for that.

Zaza seemed confused on defense. And there were no double teams on Jefferson. Except towards the end when it was too late to rally back. This team will have to trap big offensive players like him more due to our defensive limitations with Dirk.

I don't think we went mysteriously cold. If you look at the different in the types of shots we were forced to shoot and chose to shoot vs what they got, the issue lies in all the jumpshots. We had a long stretch where we went one on one where one guy touched the ball and it was a long or midrange jumpshot fairly contested. We can not play that way.
Rick sit and watched that type of play for WAY too long too. That was a very important point in the game and if the guys are getting caught up and not thinking, he needs to interfere sooner. It looks like we have tons of plays drawn up to run that get us sorta open mid range jumpshots. We need more organized plays that get us closer attempts or options to get to the foul line when we are bleeding out like last night and vs Toronto.
What happened to when all else is failing, GTFO of Dirks way and lets iso him?? That is still a better option than anyone else one on one dribbling a bit then launching! Now it's a big problem if Dirk doesn't mix it up and chooses to only shoot over defenders but you have to get him the ball and clear the F out. A few buckets can turn any game around as long as you do it before it gets out of hand, and last night it was too late to really do anything. It was over so early in the 4th.

Zaza is a journeyman because his talent is limited. If we get a healthy Javale we will have rim protection. If he doesn't get healthy we are screwed.

Based on RC's remarks after the game I'm losing complete faith that McGee will be a factor for a long time.
The FO should have seen this coming and probably the reason for bringing in Dalembert. Mejri probably isn't the answer but should at least be given a chance to prove something.
Mavs really need to start shopping for some type of defensive center even if undersized or it will be brutal beyond belief when we start playing division games. This is Dirk/Kaman all over again...only this time Dirk is 3 years older.

These last two games were pretty bad, and it now puts some pressure on us. I know it's very early, but the next two games against New Orleans are already absolutely vital.

I'm sorry, but people are borderline delusional if they think that McGee is going to save the defense.
I think the team really misses what Aminu brought. I think the hole at small forward until Parsons gets healthy is really hurting the team. That's why I don't get Anderson not getting more of a shot.

Anderson doesn't look ready..he's kind of a mess. I agree Aminu is missed terribly.

What I don't get after what we saw during the preseason (yaya, "preseason" I know), is why Jenkins is getting nearly zero playing time. Anyone have any insight on this?
I like everyone on this team, but it's starting to be obvious to me what needs to be done unless things change...
- Harris has been terribly inefficient. But, he still has worth for his defense and change of pace aggression.
22.4min
7.6 PPG
33.3% FG
17.6% 3FG
56.3% FT
1.6 AST
1.4 Turnovers
1 STL
0.4 BLK
- Charlie V has been really bad so far this season. It's cool to see him being more aggressive to the rim this season, but he's had too shooting 20% from three. This guy might be done.
13.4min
6.2 PPG
38.2% FG
20.0% 3FB
50.0% FT
3.4 REB
0.2 AST
0.2 STL
0.2 BLK
For reference... http://www.mavs.com/team/team-stats/
- Raymond Felton has surely improved his stock. I can see him being a good piece on this team, but maybe he will actually become a worthwhile trade chip this season.
- We have Jenkins which played great during the preseason, and hasn't played terrible during the season in his limited minutes - lead the team in scoring in one game. We also have Justin Anderson, which hasn't played great when given the chance, but that chance has been so limited (6.5 min of garbage time). This kid has potential, but he needs play time to reach it.
- We desperately need interior defense. I believe Jeremy Evans would rebound, defend, and score better than Charlie V with more play time. Obviously, the Center position needs improvement the most for interior defense. I'm a fan of what Zaza brings to this team, but we need a defensive, shot blocking center as a starter.
- Harris and Charlie V have gotta go if they don't shape up. And, I think Felton could help on the trade front if he keeps improving his stock. Trade all 3 and try to net a real defensive stopper for the Center position. (Everyone Tweet at Larry Sanders to get him to come back to the NBA and play for the Mavs!). Besides Sanders, who could this be?... Then give more playing time to Jenkins, Anderson, Evans, and Powell.
- But, there is still one big problem. Someone needs to step up and become a real scoring weapon on this team. Someone that will put the team on his back to win games. Someone with killer instinct. That is what we are missing from Ellis gone. The hope is that Wes and/or Parson can be eventually. I'm not so sure this will happen. Who would this player be and how could the mavs obtain him? Or should Dirk be asked to regain the mindset of being option numero uno until the day he retires - he is surely our best player so far this season and is not getting enough touches.

Good post Robillion. Unfortunately Matthews and Pasons have never been and probably won't be that guy. They are good 3rd options. deron is more likely to be that go to guy IMO. Or of course Dirk.
Yes Harris and Charlie V. Have been hideous. Unfortunately we may have missed a window to sell high on Devin before the season. He will come around and play better though. I'm all for more Evans and less Charlie- which is what I think we'll see next few games.
We really miss Richard Jefferson right now. Anderson isn't remotely ready.
Not to pile on because I like this group of guys and I'm thrilled to have RC extended but Rick has been awfully pokey in his in game adjustments so far. As you stated no Jenking when the regulars can't buy a bucket. Really slow to send help on Al Jefferson. Slow to call timeouts and lay into guys for lack of hustle and jacking up jumpers. Not running enough plays to get Dirk involved when he's hot. Etc.
Unfortunately this team lacks a tru go to scorer. Even if DeAndre and come here that be the case. We'd be a much better pick and roll team though and way better on the offensive glass
