Mavs Free Agency Rumors: Dwight Howard (NOPE)
@xOrtiz4x: Sources: The Mavs are trying to lock up a deal with Dwight Howard. Both sides have talked. Mavs attention is on him.

I'm not 100% sold on the source, so take this with a grain of salt...

Since spares are getting offered max contracts, why the hell not? Overpaying Dwight is better than nothing.

Agreed. At this point, I'd rather have Dwight than NOT have him. Mavs have nothing to lose if they aren't serious about rebuilding.

I just don't think the Mavs will be willing to offer even a 3 year contract to Howard. I won't be surprised if they offer something like a one year $28M deal with a PO for a second.

Not to mention Evan Turner and Stephenson are still available to start at SF here.

A person with knowledge of the Blazers' plans says their intention is to go after both Chandler Parsons and Dwight Howard.
Dunno who this guy is but TMac retweeted it so...

The Blazers not only get a top-shelf small forward if they beat out Memphis for Chandler Parsons but also a proven Dwight Howard recruiter.

If we can still get a center like Dwight/Bojimbo/Mahimi and a decent wing like Bazemore/Afflalo/Stevenson and then resign Deron and Dirk, maybe we'll be ok with improvement from Anderson and Mejri and a little contribution from Hammons.

Howard played that style Portland plays in Houston and Orlando already. He would just stay in Houston then. Don't think he's going to Portland.

@espn_macmahon: The Mavs have no plans to target Dwight Howard or Bismack Biyombo at this point after missing out on Hassan Whiteside, a source told ESPN.com. As has been the case for months, the Mavs' stance on Howard is that their interest depends on his price tag plummeting far below a maximum contract.
@rhylanrowe: Not saying Dwight is Dwight anymore.. but are they just gonna suit up big piles of money?

@espn_macmahon: Dwight Howard for the $24M per year he wants? Mavs not interested.
If that price plummets? Could be a short-term fit.

Seriously Cuban has to stop getting cheap like this. Even if it fails we can do the rebuilding.

Trade Dirk. Rebuild. Sorry but let's not delude ourselves. The time has come.

God, I wish Cuban was in my fantasy football league auction draft -- he's one of those idiots who refuses to pony-up big cash for players early, then ends up overpaying for mediocre players later.

I was thinking they'd get Tyson back, but are they even willing to pay him that money?

Here's the thing. Once all the big fish get away, then you end up over paying for the leftovers. If you don't, someone else will. While it's true Dirk taking a pay cut offset us overpaying for Parsons, he still wasn't worth what we paid for him. But that's the type of people who are left. Are we just going to over pay for a bunch of one year contract journeymen again?

I sure hope they'll throw max money at Dirk in case they have the space after missing out on everyone.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact we are willing to pay Batum 26m a year but refuse to pay DH12 anywhere near that. And by all accounts Batum had a significantly higer usage rate than Howard and had all the opportunity in the world to showcase his skills last year. All it amounted to was a very average role player 15.6PER. Meanwhile DH12 had a career low(outside of rookie year) usage rate and played uninspired and was totally ignored by Harden but still managed to sleep walk his way to a double double and a 19PER. In a market where Mozgov is getting 16 and Noah 18 why are Mavs so willing to throw 26m per to a role player in Batum, who I like but has some similar defense/rebounding issues as Parsons and yet we want Howard at a bargain basement price with almost nothing on the roster to warrant such a bizarre picky approach? Oh and Howard fits next to Dirk about as well as you can get which is more than what I can say for Batum, who I have no idea how RC would use him. Recent wings don't tend to be flourishing under RC though(Crowder, Parsons).

I don't understand. The Mavs are fooling themselves if they think they won't have to overpay for talent to come here. Tristan Thompson got a 5 year 82 million dollar deal and Mosgov just got a 64 million dollar deal and you think Howard is suppose to what? Take 10 million a year?

People should stop freaking out. Mavs unwilling to pay Howard 24 mil shows me that clearly for some reason they do not want Howard there. There is no reason to believe that it has anything to do with money, especially if you already have rumors that Dirk does not want to see Howard in Mavs uniform.
Mavs also probably do not want to overpay Biyombo, plus he is kind of short for a center position.
The thing that I can not get out of my head, is how Al Jefferson signed only for 10 mil per year. You have Mozgov and Noah going higher and he accepts pennies... Do I believe he is a center? No. But for 10 mil, he is cheap 6th man off the bench who you can use at 5 also. Would he have been a good fit at Mavs? Probably not, but at this price...

If the Mav aren't tanking, then who are we signing or trading for to play center?

I think tanking may be our best shot. Let Hammons and Anderson develop. Make our 2017 draft pick a lottery pick. Some solid talent in that draft

Zaza get 4/35?
This offseason is absolutely hilarious. It's as fun as watching the Trump campaign or the Rio olympics. It's like three trains colliding over and over while a dynamite store explodes in slow motion, exposing swear pipes

I don't understand either. My only guess maybe Dirk doesn't like his attitude and doesn't want to play with him? Nothing else makes sense to me- UNLESS they're already planning to move on from Dirk officially start rebuilding.

I hope that is the point. Dirk can't be willing to sit here and play with this team and the Mavs cant' be willing to want Dirk to do it either.

Absolutely. It would be mutually beneficial to both Dirk and Dallas to split.

Yep. I don't want to see it happen but it needs to. Dirk has some good years left. Mavs need to tank. It needs to happen. It should've happened a few years ago to be honest.
