Hammons is looking a lot better than what I remember of him during summer league. I remember all the talk during the draft was that he had a questionable motor. In this game, he looked like he both had a good motor and a very surprising outside touch as well. I'm thinking Rick and the coaching staff developed him a lot during the summer. Bogut is going to be a good player for him to learn from.

Talent can usually trump any negatives. Hammons is hugely talented...especially for a center. Very rare in today's game.

Not sure about his ability to pass, but if he can develop that side of his game, am I crazy to suggest he looks like a Marc Gasol starter-kit? Regardless, it looks like the Mavs picked up another very competent player in the draft. Which is surprising given their draft history and that they only had a second round pick to work with.

Give AJ two years and he could master the fadeaway.

I missed this game, but I've been impressed with all 3 in the preseason... Glancing at the box score I see both DFS and Gibson struggled with scoring, but Gibson had 7 assists while people in this thread mentioned Finney-Smith's defense. I also see that not-Bruce Hornsby scored 12 points in 12 minutes.
Too bad we can only keep 2 of these guys (that's a good problem) -- anyone have a gut feeling how this will shake out?

Yeah, Brussino is an absolute lock. Huge BBIQ, can shoot, handle the ball, makes smart plays. Needs to strengthen up, but I don't see too many other holes.
Mavs scouting department when it comes to young players is finally on target.
His highlights this game.

Actually one of his biggest weaknesses is his grasp of the English language -- he speaks less than rookie Dirk did!
Looks like he's working on it though...
Quote:
Brussino started taking English classes in North Dallas on Tuesday. The classes will be Monday through Friday for two hours a day.
“We have a great game that transcends the lingo problems, and he’s a smart kid,” Carlisle said. “And we have a couple of guys here who are fluent in Spanish.
“[J.J.] Barea and Kaleb Canales are both fluent in Spanish, and Salah speaks Spanish as well. So he’s got help and guys are helping him along.”

Brussino clearly will get a spot.
I think Gibson or Hornsby will get the other spot. Gibson would definitely get the edge if we weren't crowded at guard. I can imagine a stretch where Deron or Devin goes out with injury and we could use maybe an extra ball handler.
Hornsby brings what appears to be a higher IQ overall and a bit more fiestyness. It's a toss up between those two for me. He just needs to get some shorts that fit and not borrow Mejris.

Yeah, I think Hornsby looked much better than Gibson but I haven't seen too much action this season. Not a fan of Gibson but know he has the ability to light it up but Hornsby seems to be the type of player RC loves.
Does Finney-Smith play the same position as Brussino?
Finney-Smith does play good D and looks like he could fit that Aminu type role eventually but we seem to have pretty solid young defenders ahead of him at the wings (Barnes, Acy, Anderson, Matthews).
Deron and Devin's injury histories might give the upper hand to a guard like Hornsby or Gibson imo.
And I feel pretty good about our depth at center after watching Hammons last night. Seems to have a pretty solid all around game so a legit 3rd option as far as I'm concerned.

I can't remember the last time I saw this much talent in our training camp... I'm wondering how many of these guys end up in Frisco? I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see a few of them get picked up by other teams.

Centers - 4
Forwards - 8 (6)
Guards - 4 (6)
Two guys (Matthews and Anderson are guard/forwards that can play 2/3)
We're really deep everywhere so that last spot isn't going to get much PT. It's more of a development for the future thing.
options
Brussino 6'8" small forward with good size- 23 years old- too much upside. Shooting is stellar both off the dribble and off screens/passes. Parsons starter kit with a higher potential ceiling. Good mobility, but average dribbling skills. Slight frame holds him back.
Gibson - 6'2" pass-first PG - 28 years old - ballsy JJB type. Not tremendous creating plays, but sneaky at scoring in lots of ways. Spark-plug type who burned it up in China and in Summer League. Has been ice cold in pre-season. Curry does what he does, but guard is the closest we are to having an actual need.
Finney-Smith - 6'8" PF in the body of a SF - 23 years old - great defense and rebounding. Can be decent in other skills. Really coachable. Upside isn't terribly high, but could be a pre-Portland Aminu with less size (Aminu is 6'10" and DFS is only 6'8" with shoes)
At this point I think Brussino is guaranteed to make the roster. There's no way to keep rights on him and send him overseas to develop. If we want him, we have to lock him up and send him to the D-league. If Brussino is a lock, then DFS is going to find it VERY difficult to find PT on the team and I dont think a lot of NBA execs see the value in stashing guys in D-leaugue whose peak potential is a defensive specialist with only average offensive skills. He's young and coachable, but will the Mavs spend money on him to develop when he'll be unlikely to see minutes outside D-league the next two years?
Personally think Brussino and Gibson will get spots. Brussino will get PT next year after a solid season in the d-league. Gibson will average 18-20 pts, but wont be able to scratch it on an actual NBA roster. He'll get cut after or during this season (if there is a trade or a good free agent)

Gibson is the only player on the bubble to have a guaranteed contract... Rick said that doesn't necessarily guarantee a roster spot, but it does indicate that the FO had more faith in him than the rest when they signed him.

I guess one issue I have with keeping Gibson is his age. He'll turn 29 in a few weeks and not exactly someone we can develop much. With the exception of Curry all of our guards are old so I'd rather go with someone that has some upside that we could develop as the 15th player.
I'd almost rather go with a 24 yo Horsby over Gibson. Even though Gibson is the better player right now, Hornsby is gritty with some size and savvy and a pretty darn good shooter (almost 42% 3pters his last year of college) and displayed some of that scoring potential last night.
Can't say I'd be disappointed either way though but have a feeling a guard will beat out DFS for the final spot.

We don't have any pure shooting guards outside of Matthews, so I'd pick one that could fill in depth there.

I'm going to be honest. I haven't seen much from Gibson since maybe about the first half of the second summer league game. I mean he looked like a keeper up until that point, and then his performances started to be pretty forgettable to me.
I don't know how he had seven assists in the last game, but I thought he's looked kind of bad at running the offense. He's obviously another shooting guard in a point guard body, but I'd like to see a bit more savvy from a 29 year old player.
I'm with rimrocker. I've seen all of maybe 5 minutes of game action from Hornsby, but the kid looks like he has a chance to develop into a decent player. As is, Hornsby already looks to have a decent jump shot, and yeah, he seems to have a certain JJB-like grittiness to his game. It's going to be interesting watching this play out. I definitely want to see more game time from this kid.

I also agree with rim and this. If we take a guard I hope it's hornsby. I still like DFS because if he developed a corner 3 he would immediatly be better than all of the others since he can defend multiple positions. But count me out on Gibson. He got it going last night but he is taking monta type shots without monta type ability. He gets a screen and he pulls up for 18 footers the moment it's clear. If Brussino were to make 8 shots in a row and is in the corner wide open Gibson strikes me as the guy who would shoot his own shot if it was open instead of giving it to the wide open dude who is scorching hot. He could give you 5/6 shooting and a spark or 0/6 in 4 minutes with a giant "WTF" attached.

Gibson's age could work against him, but Sarge got some starter minutes as a 28-year-old rookie a few years ago -- not that Gibson would, but Rick likes mature players.... But then I remember the Mavs had zero depth at center back then, whereas they have plenty of depth at PG now (even though everyone aside from Curry is on the wrong side of 30).
But Gibson DID score 42 points per game at a 50% average in China (yes, 42 PPG on 50% shooting), but it was China... I'd say shooting is one of the few stats that doesn't really change between leagues, but that isn't really the case with the NBA. These guys play at such a high level that just a little pressure -- not even a hand in the face -- can disrupt the rhythm of a player.
Hornsby is intriguing, but is he a better overall player than Gibson? Yeah, he's gritty -- and they can both score -- but he certainly doesn't distribute like Gibson (who might be our third-best passer after Williams and Barea, not including a non-initiator like Bogut)... But who knows, maybe stealing a spot from Gibson is just The Way It Is? Rick kinda looks like a Hornsby fan to me.
And do you take either of them over Finney-Smith, who provides the two things that RC has stressed the most over the last few years -- rebounding & defense? But he basically plays the same position (albeit, differently) as Brussino, who we all agree is probably a lock based on current talent and potential in today's NBA.
All I know is that I'm glad I don't have to make this decision... Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with Gibson, Hornsby or Finney-Smith getting the 15th spot, but I'm pretty sure whichever two don't play for Dallas get snatched up by another club instead of ending up in Frisco.

He got those assists pretty much by just passing to Brussino.

Yeah, we're talking about the 15th roster spot so I don't think it will make a huge difference either way we go. All 3 would be backups to backups (DFS/Acy, Gibson/Curry, Hornsby/Barea) and I don't see any of them tearing up the league this season so I'll be happy with any of them. Like you, I can see where Rick would love certain aspects on each of their games though.
I'm thinking/guessing it will be one of the guards though because of the age and health issue histories with some of our guards and the fact that Rick loves the 3 guard lineups.

The German kid? He hasn't gotten many minutes this preseason, so I wouldn't be surprised if he misses the cut...

I think yahyes has the same question I have....can Brussino play SG?
I agree Brussino is a lock at 14 but if he is capable of playing SG he could possibly fit the role and void you originally mentioned possibly giving DFS the edge over Gibson or another guard as the 15th player.
Brussino is listed at 6'7" and looks even taller than that to me but seems he could be better suited more as a 2/3 than a 3/4.
DWill/Barea/Harris
Matthews/Curry/Brussino?
Barnes/Anderson/DFS
Dirk/Powell/Acy
Bogut/Mejri/Hammons

Brussino i see as more of a 3. Way too slim to be a 4. Not athletic enough for the 2 spot.
