GDT: game 23 - Mavs (8-13) at Hawks (10-10) 6:30 pm FSSW/LP
Hawks corrected their free fall and have been good lately. 4-3 after losing 7 of 9 games.
Mavs still free falling. They looked like an NBA team against the Suns but still lost. 6 straight losses and 9 losses in 11 games. No team has been worse over that stretch.
injury report
No Mavs out for only the second time this year

Which KP will we get tonight?
Porzingis playing time
In the first six games returning from injury Kristaps Porzingis averaged 20 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks while shooting 33-percent from three. He had shifted to playing more time back at the center position, and seemed to find a rhythm. Those final three games he averaged 24 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks, and shot 43-percent from three.
And then he was held out a single game due to a back-to-back in the schedule. In his next three game stint, before being held out of the second game of another back-to-back, Porzingis posted 15 points, seven rebounds, one block, while shooting 20-percent from three.
In Monday’s contest against the Suns Porzingis had his moments finding a rhythm, adding 19 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks while going 3-of-7 from three. After the game he spoke to that comfort level, mentioning that he was able to play some longer stints without being subbed out. It allowed him to find a flow to the game and feel more comfortable. This was something he said he’d like to talk to the coaching staff about, and something we’d like to keep an eye on tonight and moving forward.

Chuck Cooperstein@coopmavs
In what road city do the Mavericks have their longest active losing streak?
It's Atlanta where they've lost 7 straight and where they will be tonight.
No time like the present to end all droughts.

Ok, I'll do it.
I'm predicting a 7pt Mavs win tonight. Mark it down, call your bookies. This one is a stone cold lock.

I think the odds are better than 50% that the game will be close, but the Mavs will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The only braindead play we have yet to see is calling a time out with none on the clock Chris Webber style. That would be a new wrinkle and a not-so-typical way of choking a game away. ;-)

I simulated this game on NBA 2K
The Mavs blew the Hawks out.
But having said that I gutted the entire roster and ended up with Drummond, KP, DFS, Lavine and Luka as starters LOL.

This was some of the funniest stuff I've read in awhile
https://www.si.com/nba/mavericks/new...ide-are-you-on
MAVWRECK: Up 11 in the third quarter at home against the Suns. Poof. Another loss. Another sign that this – again – just isn’t the year.
MAVERICK: We were right there. Just gotta clean some stuff up. Make some tweaks.
MAVWRECK: Tweaks? You need an extreme makeover, physically and mentally. How do you not use your “foul to give” on Phoenix’s final possession? You think championship teams give Devin Booker a clean look at a game winner? Bang!
MAVERICK: Gotta admit, that one stung. Maxi’s gotta foul Chris Paul before he passes, or Josh has to grab Booker. Something. But you heard Rick, we’re this close. “We’re learning the hard way that attention to the smallest details are of the utmost importance,” the coach said. “It’s hard to imagine being more disappointed. But we’re doing too many good things to not keep pushing toward progress.”
MAVERICK: That game – that loss – will be rock-bottom. It’ll be a turning point. You watch.
MAVWRECK: How many times have I heard that since 2011?
MAVERICK: That’s right, baby. 2011! This team is capable of putting it together and making a run, just like that …
MAVWRECK: Granted, that one I’ll never win. But do I need to remind you that since then they are 7-20 in the playoffs without winning a single series?
MAVERICK: We’ve got Carlisle, one of the best coaches in NBA history.
MAVWRECK: Is he though? 12 seasons in Dallas coaching Dirk and/or Luka and he’s got only one championship. One! Of course, you probably think the Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy is “one of the best” coaches in NFL history because he won one Super Bowl in 13 years with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, right?

A trap right away on Trae. JRich on Trae, smart decision.

I can’t begin to accept Young until he trims his flowing pubes

Pretty cool Vince Carter is on the hawks broadcast already. Kind words of the Mavs organization and very complimentary of Luka and Rick

I don't think WCS as a big gets enough credit for his defensive footwork on the perimeter vs smaller players

He’s very quick laterally for a big man too. Has no trouble staying with guys

If they could take WCS agility on defense and add that to KP the Mavs would have a top 5 defensive BIG in KP LOL

LOL
I just had a convo about the Mavs refusing to trap on defense vs C.Paul to mix things up that entire time vs Phoenix.
Now tonight they decide to trap

Yeah I've given up hope for KP on defense.
I'm not sure if it's coaching or he's just that bad in awareness.

KP feeling more comfortable taking those early threes.
Doesn’t mean they’re going in. He’s just comfortable out there lol

Watch how many times the Mavs run a set play for KP with Luka out the game
It just makes no sense that RC won't run a tight ship when Luka comes out the game.
He called plays with Rondo and Kidd here yet he let's Brunson and Burke do what ever they want.

Defending the pnr is a foreign idea for the Mavs.

I hope everyone paid attention to that sequence where they ran back to back plays for KP instead of letting Burke and Brunson just chuck up shots without passing.

What was the point of that DFS foul, which put the Hawks in the bonus and shooting FTs??? So what if you get frustrated, you don't just foul to set things right.

Man I'm say it again
Can switch WCS footwork with KP on defense
Look how he stayed with Trae Young and recovered to block the shot

Mavs 3-17 on 3's
KP 4/4 on shots in the paint 0/4 from 3
Sounds about right

I'm not exactly sure what Richardson is doing.
He's been pretty good on Young but when they switched him to Huerter he just got lost on defense several times.
Maybe he's just good at defending on ball which is why he had more success with Young as opposed to Huerter.
