PGDT: Preseason game 1 - Jazz (0-0) at Mavs (0-0) 7:30pm Bally Sports
This is Kidd's first game as Mavs coach.
Jazz finished 1st in the league last year and did not lose significant pieces
Mavs finished 8th in the league (5th in the West) and may or may not be better. We only lost Richardson (of those who got significant minutes) and added Bullock, Franky Smokes, and two Browns)
We will have to see how the new defense/offense is.
Go Mavs.

Mavs win by an eyelash. 80-79. The beginning of a 100-game win streak.

Thanks for doing GDT.
Let's stay healthy and hope to see the bench guys are improved.

Excited to watch this season. Couple of new faces, and a new coaching regime. As much as I liked Rick it was time for him to go.

Which new or relocated head coach will make the biggest impact on his new team?
1. Rick Carlisle, Indiana β 64%
2. Ime Udoka, Boston β 14%
3. Jason Kidd, Dallas β 11%

It's preseason so it's a battle of back ups and far bench guys. Jazz aren't playing most of their key guys and KP Doncic are playing at most a half

Dfs, Frank, and Powell are out tonight. I was hoping to see some Frank tonight.

Luka’s dynamic with Jason Kidd
It will be fascinating to see how Luka Doncic and new head coach Jason Kidd interact as they have more opportunities to get closer and build chemistry. While Rick Carlisle and Luka would often communicate on the floor, it never looked voluntary; when substituted out, Luka would often walk to the bench and speak to assistant coach Jamahl Mosely rather than Carlisle. But Kidd and Luka could look to implement a collaborative offensive scheme, and I’ll be focused on their in-game interactions this preseason (and as the season goes on) for hints that this is actually happening.

Same. Iβm excited to see if we can develop him. If he can knock down the 3 ball at a good clip I think he can earn valuable minutes with his defensive capabilities.

I'm not even remotely worried about Luka and Kidd.
Kidd and KP is what needs to work.

I wonder if Brown did something Kidd didn’t like, or if he was only supposed to play 5 minutes?

They need to keep Moses in their plans, he's better than any center we have on this team. KP is a forward btw.

Moses is a handful. Kidd should not have named Powell starting center.

Can't mess around and let Jones slip away.
Most everyone who played looked pretty good tonight. Josh messed up the fast break with the 1 charge but he had some good pushes in transition to initiate and get other breaks started.
Omoruyi was killer on the glass. Offensive boards were impressive.
Luka might be a solid player one day.
Moses was better than I thought he would be. Worked well with Luka in the SLU. Was very engaged and when they got wires crossed on PnR, he immediately went up to communicate with him.

fun to see the Boban love when he hit his 3's. I mean you got a whole team pulling for him and happy to see him do well.

He will be playing Friday in fact. According to Kidd.
But talent wise, Jones already looks better and more fluid offensively

Still don't see much in Green. You just can't have 0 offensive game no matter what your defense looks like.

He's gotta look to make something happen on occasion with his athleticism. Get to the FT line with a head down drive or something. Sheeesh.

The good
We won! Utah didn't have most of their starters, but we won
Luka is Luka. Dude was efficient and awesome.
Brunson's passing. Seems he heard the criticism of being a shoot-first SG and played some PG.
Green is so mobile and active. His defense was amazing.
The Brown Boys look solid. Sterling hitting his jumpers. Moses rebounding well.
Third/fourth string competition, but our Jones and Hunt looked good.
our defense looked slightly improved. Occasionally stifling
5 steals, 5 blocks. Again, we were playing the Jazz bench, but if we want to disrupt, we gotta get steals and blocks. We were 30th in steals and 21st in blocks last year (4.3steals, 4.0 blocks so over last year's average)
the bad
KP and THJ looked rusty and inefficient, although KP did look engaged rather than bored. Just didn't hit shots and got stripped.
Green is a game-changer defensively, but he has no offense.
Our ability to confidently shoot off the pass was bad
Clang clang clang. This team still goes minutes where they stop scoring and allow huge runs. They also answer hot shooting with jacked shots, which they make and we miss.
Huge defensive lapses were not immediately solved by Kidd's hiring

Kleber, Bullock out tomorrow
Brunson probably out
KP/Luka/THJ will only play first half
Powell, Franky Smokes, and Dodo will play
Burke not even mentioned, which kinda speaks to how they view him.

Again. Jason Kidd said Burke would be playing Friday. Unless something changed since post game. He was the "emergency player" yesterday. Brunson is the emergency player tomorrow.

I think you CAN, itβs just really rare. Thybulle has basically zero offense for Philly but was 3rd team all defense (which is kind of a joke as I think he played 20mins a night). I think Green can be that good defensively only he can potentially guard SG, SF and PF and PG on some plays eventually.
He needs time but think of it like the Toronto Raptors model where they draft switchable athletes like Siakam and OG and figure they can learn to shoot with reps and confidence.

Since offensive variability (deviation from the pack) is greater than defensive variability there is literally no way a player can make up total impact purely from defense unless they are hands down the best defensive player in the league and even then there total impact would be that of a league average defender than can play good offense. Green simply doesn't have discernable offensive skills. He is and will be a bust.
