Default Clippers sign Rice

Clippers sign F Glen Rice

October 11, 2003

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Veteran forward Glen Rice, released a week ago, was signed Friday by the Los Angeles Clippers.

Third all-time in 3-pointers made, Rice was released by the Utah Jazz after reaching an undisclosed buyout agreement on the final year of his contract, valued at $9 million.

Three days earlier, the Jazz acquired Rice and an undisclosed amount of cash from the Houston Rockets for reserve center John Amaechi and a second-round pick. By trading for Rice and buying him out, the Jazz reached the salary floor of $32 million.

Rice, who never reported to the Jazz, will serve a better purpose for the Clippers, who need an upgrade in perimeter shooting after losing guards Eric Piatkowski and Andre Miller to free agency.

Rice is a 36-year-old marksman who has been plagued by injuries. He averaged only 8.9 points in just 82 games over two seasons with the Rockets. He has made 1,554 3-pointers and won the Long Distance Shootout at All-Star Weekend in 1995.

In 982 games with Miami, Charlotte, the Los Angeles Lakers, New York and Houston, Rice has averaged 18.6 points. He is a three-time All-Star and won the game's MVP award in 1997.

What an odd pickup for the Clippers.

Not really, I'm sure that they got him very cheap.

But he doesn't fit the style of play by the Clippers - they are a movement kind of offense and Rice doesn't move anymore.

It just seems odd that the Clips would want him and that Rice would want to go there.

They might use him like we did Walt Williams. Park him at the 3-point line and let the other guys do the running around.

That's probably it since they lost a shooter in Piatkowski.

I would tend to agree with this. And Piatkowski didn't do much else than shoot threes.

I agree with you Dirno.

AND I think that another part is that since the Clips are so young, they might be looking to add a littly experience for Maggette and co. And I think we can all agree that Rice is old

He's on his last leg, but he's one of those guys that disgust me to see him nail 3-pointers.

No Doubt Rice can still shoot the rock....he never got enough credit for what he did with the Lakers....not a shock with those attention hogs Shaq and Kobe.
