The Knicks are currently 44 million over the cap.
And with there recent play, have to be looking at ways to cut salary and look to rebuild through the draft and free agents (which look really appealing in the next few years).
So I found a suiter in our Mavericks to help them in this desperate time for the Knicks...
Dallas sends : Juwan Howard - $18,750,000
Dallas sends : Eduardo Najera - 465,850
Dallas sends : Donnell Harvey - 927,360
Dallas sends : cash considerations - 3,000,000
Total : 20,143,210
New York sends : Marcus Camby - 6,250,000
New York sends : Mark Jackson - 3,860,000
New York sends : Kurt Thomas - 4,413,375
New York sends : Shandon Anderson - 5,500,000
Total : 20,023,375
Why Dallas does this trade:
Dallas finally finds a team willing to take Juwan for this year and next. They hate to get ride of Najera and Harvey, but they know they need to win for today. They finally find there "True" backup point gaurd in Jackson. We will worry how "HEAVE IT UP" Hardaway pouts later when his minutes go down. We get a quality backup to Finley in Anderson. But the reason why we do this trade is Camby and Thomas. These two guys would solidify a suspect frontcourt with Camby and Thomas playing most of the center's minutes. So this is how there roster looks like now..
PG : Nash / Jackson / Hardaway
SG : Finley / Anderson / Buckner
SF : Griffin / Newman / Manning
PF : Nowitzki / Thomas / Wang
C : Camby / Eschmeyer / Bradley
..with maybe Esch and Newman on IR.
Why New York does this trade:
New York is in a position where they have very few teams to talk with about trades.
Dallas one of the very few..
They are having a horrible year this year and with same team intact does not bode well in the future. They will be getting rid of some players
that may not fit in to there future plans for the team. Jackson is getting into his latter years and will not be there when they are title contenders again. Shandon Anderson is really not fitting in with there style of play and would not have signed him if given a second chance.
Kurt Thomas has been stepping on toes lately with his end of game tirades against officials and is falling out of favor with the front office (IMO). And Marcus Camby is coming off surgery and is a viable trade piece on the open market.
They do this trade because is gets them some cap room by 2003 and will be a major player for most of the free agents that year. Maybe going after
the great "Duncan" chase that everybody seems to think will happen. (Ohh, by the way, I think that he will be back at San Antonio). Also, they get two NBA ready players that look to have a bright future in the NBA in Najera and Harvey.
This is there roster after this trade..
PG : Ward / Eisley
SG : Houston / Postell
SF : Sprewell / Weatherspoon
PF : Howard / Najera / Harvey
C : Harrington / Knight / Spencer
I would like to know your thought on this trade..
It seems this trade helps both teams..
