Default CBS Sportsline Power Rankings Compare-O!

http://www.sportsline.com/nba/playerrankings/PF

At the CBS sports site they have an efficiency ranking that I think is pretty decent for the regular season player evaluations. I think who ever gets the first seed and has home court throughout the playoffs will have a big advatage since there is no real pecking order among the elite teams. So... since the teams are so different we can't really get a feel for what they are like... so I wanted to try to get a feel on how much each elite team improved. So I averaged all the teams players power rankings last season and this season. A lot of players from San antonio retired though so I couldn't find their rankings. I show averages for 5 players.. then 6.. then 7 and then 8. Here is a little chart comparing them:

team - 5 player power rankings averages(highest), 6 players, 7 players, 8 players, 11 players

Dallas now - 22, 41, 56, 69, 132
Dallas before - 46, 65, 83, 97, 155
Lakers now - 25, 39, 58, 84, 141
Lakers before - 70, 87, 98, 115,161
Twolves now - 35, 41, 55, 71,141
Twolves Before - 55,69, 83,104,167
Spurs now - 79, 89,102,113,151
Spurs before - 82,100,111,146 , ?
Sacramento Now - 52, 58, 63, 71,114
Sac Before - 56, 63, 76 93, 154

I have no idea what any of this proves... if anything.. I was just curious and bored.

I was led to believe there would be no math on this examination.

LOL, I confused myself a bit too.

These are all the player rankings of each team, last season and this season. While the rankings might not be perfect... they should be consistent of all the players that were evaluated.

Like I said though... I don't know what it proves because the Spurs had the lowest combined rankings last season and this season. Yet they still won the championship last season. The onlky thing it really proves is that we had the highest ranked starting five, according to CBS spoortline efficiency ranking. Sacramento appears to be deeper but their starters aren't close to the Mavs. Even LA's starters were not ranked as high as the Mavs but they are very very close.

We also had, on average, the highest ranked five players last season.

So basically
Mavs, Lakers, TWolves have drastically improved based on last year's power rankings for each player.
Spurs and Kings have not.

The remaining question is "what different does it make?"

because last year and this year, we rank significantly higher than the spurs, but most people, including most people on this board put us behind them.

right?

There is a problem though, because (as I found out when I was half way done) many of the PSurs were not inluded because they were retired. So the Spurs might have actually had a much higher ranking. I just don't know.

I really just did it to give myself an idea of how these teams have changed and how their player stacked up. I would like to incorperate pictures of all the players too... but I got lazy and I don't have webspace to host some kind of graphic that I was thinking of.

The thing is... I always thought the Mavs were much better than the Spurs last year. Also, if Fin hadn't gotten injured we could have had HCA in the WCF.. who knows what would have happend then.

Another reason I did this is because I wanted to test this system out and see if I could predict anything correctly this season using this information.

Does anyone know what the ranking of records is now of the elite teams versus the other elite teams?

We have the best record against the elite teams, right? And then the it was the Lakers right? This power ranking system might end up being correct after all...

Wow. Everything looks fuzzy to me right now...

But I think this means that just about everyone in the West has better players now than they did before. It's hard to say that will translate into wins, but it does speak volumes as to what all of us already knew. There is more individual talent on this team than before. It still has to fit together though...

Actually
8+10=18 and 18/2=9
9*10/30=3
5*6/2=15

and hence

18+9+3+15=45
