Booth's injury-plagued season likely over
Sonics center Calvin Booth will undergo season-ending surgery on his right ankle, according to The Tacoma News-Tribune..
Booth said he did not know when he would have the surgery. He said he needs to confer with general manager Rick Sund and coach Nate McMillan before deciding.
"The optimistic view is I would be able to come back in three and-a-half to four months, on the short end," Booth told the newspaper. "Six months on the long end."
Booth, who signed a $34 million contract last summer, will finish the season played only 15 games, averaging 6.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 0.87 blocked shots.

Man...how glad are we that he didn't stay a Mav. Tough break for Booth...hope he heals fast and all, but I am sure glad he didn't stick here.

I'll admit that I was bummed when Seattle signed him. Cause I thought Cuban could have done better and we ended up with Eschmeyer instead.
Not that Esch is a bad guy, but you know?
However, he struggled with Seattle and continued to pick up dumb fouls. Of course, he has that stellar game against us early on in the season.
But, he reminds me of Buckner, always injured. So, yes looking back, Im glad he's not with us.

Did Nellie and Cuban dodge another bullet?
I thought that was the big pothole in the offseason--the loss of Booth--and early on this year it appeared to be.
LaFrentz offsets the loss of Booth somewhat--gives a shotblocking threat PLUS offense.
I think that losing Booth for Esch may've been a net loss though--Booth had some potential, and Esch is pretty much what you see. On the other hand, team chemistry and having a player who's happy to be here has some intangible value.
So as the memory of Booth fades into the rearview, along with the question of whether Nellie and Cuban made a misstep by not resigning him, you gotta keep asking yourself if they are smarter or luckier than the rest of the league?

IF Booth hadn't been hurt and IF Booth had played to the potential a lot of people think he has, then Cuban would still be getting flack over losing him. But the results really validate Cuban's position. He said he didn't want to commit long-term big bucks to a player who had not yet proven himself. In doing that he was calculating risk. And what has happened in Seattle shows that it was the correct business decision even if Booth gets healthy next year and turns into a real player.

Give Cuban little credit, but give Nellie a lot of credit on this one. Booth was not worth the risk and dollars that he was asking for.

What this year could also mean is just that Booth's game was just better with the Mavericks system than with some other team. Whatever the case may be, all I know is if he was injured this year and was here, we would have been pissed at the resigning of him so in the end it was better for us.

So far the Mavs have been lucky. Not getting Booth turned out to be a bonus for this year (although Esch hasn't played that much more than Booth). I wonder if Booth will turn out to be a valuable player or not.
