Some roster trimming moves
Just a couple trade scenarios I've put together that would allow the Mavs to trim the roster down without having to take on any long term deals, buy anyone out this year, or give up on the possibility of retaining D.J, Jon, and adding Avery as a pg in FA.
Scenario # 1:
Dallas trades: Walker, Stack, TAW, L8, Fortson, Eddie, Delk
Dallas receives: Penny Hardaway, Tim Thomas, Antonio Davis, Eddie Robinson
New York trades: Penny Hardaway, Tim Thomas
New York receives: Walker, Stack, TAW
Chicago trades: Antonio Davis, Eddie Robinson
Chicago receives: L8, Fortson, Eddie, Delk
Dallas roster:
Harris/Jon/Avery
Quis/Penny
Fin/JHo/ER
Dirk/T.Thomas/AD
Shawn/DJ/Pod
New York - gets Walker and Stackhouse, and a little early cap relief from Walker's expiring contract
Chicago - unloads ER, gets veteran role players at every position, and gets a little early cap relief from L8's expiring contract. I'm not sold on the Bulls doing this since they're basically trading junk for junk. Maybe a second rounder and/or some cash to sweeten it for them?
Dallas - gets down to 14 guys on the roster and would have around 50 million in expiring contracts the following year from the new additions.
Scenario # 2
Dallas trades: Walker, Eddie, Delk, L8, Stack
Dallas receives: Antonio Davis, Eddie Robinson, KVH
Chicago trades: Antonio Davis, Eddie Robinson
Chicago receives: Walker, Eddie, Delk
Milwaukee trades: KVH
Milwaukee receives: L8, Stack
Dallas roster:
Harris/Jon/Avery
Quis
Fin/JHo/ER/TAW
Dirk/KVH/Fort
AD/Shawn/DJ/Pod
Chicago - wins the deal talent wise and gets early cap relief from Walker's expiring contract.
Milwaukee - early cap relief from L8, and Stack to help on the wing
Dallas - roster down to 15 guys with about 36 million in expiring contracts the following year.
Please post your thoughts. Neither of these scenarios is a put-us-over-the-top type deal, but both provide some of the things Dallas needs: immediate roster spaces, cap relief in the not-too-distant future, tradeable commodities for the following year, and capable veteran contributors at a variety of positions.

RE:Some roster trimming moves
With scenario one I like this line-up
Harris
Finley
Thomas
Dirk
Davis
Scenario one fills needs gives us Tim Thomas once thought of as a building block for the Bucks he still could be. Antonio Davis would definitely be an upgrade at center but only slightly. Eddie Robinson and Penny are junk players.

RE:Some roster trimming moves
trade actually makes sense. Now if people could stop posting the rediculous Walker for 3-4 players trades I'd be happy.
We'd be losing out on a little talent, but we would get done what needs to be done.

I agree, Erica.
Just trade Walk and be done with it. I'm sick of hearing about it.

RE:Some roster trimming moves
Here is my trade to trim the roster.
Walker, L8, Fortson, Delk, TAW, Najera
for
Shaq, Malone (SNT - 2 yr), Fischer (SNT - 2yr) ---- this way they can make the #'s work.
---------------------------------------------------------
Fischer, Harris, Avery J (vet min)
Daniels, Stackhouse, Stefansson
Finley, Howard
Nowitzki, Malone
Shaq, Bradley, Benga, Pavel
IR: Pavel, Benga, Stef or as needed with Avery, Bradley, (Shaq for 2 months)
I can't see it happening, but hey, if we are going to think big, then why not this one. The SNT of Malone and Fischer would allow the Mavs to basically set the rate to match the people moved. LA would get 20M in expiring contracts. A rebounder to work with Kobe. Najera for energy and his ability to bring in fans. I would expect Howard to have to go as well, but since I am being very optomistic, I left him here.
Since Pavel isn't signed, he would probably be sent as a draft pick as well, not that I am advocating it.
LA:
Payton, Delk
Kobe, Rush
George, Howard, Walton, TAW
Fortson, Walker, Najera
L8, Songalia
This would definately be a Kobe only team.

Walker starts in a lot of places just not here. Don't hate.
LA isn't going to take five bad contracts for shaq.

RE: Some roster trimming moves
You generally are considered the "loser" when you give up the best player in a trade. I don't know what you'd call someone who gives up the two best players in a trade. My guess would be "moron". That's the best word I can use for Cuban if he agreed to either of these trades.
You just don't give up two all-stars for a load of crap like Kieth Van Horn or Tim Thomas. Niether of those guys is as good as Walker. Neither is as good as Stackhouse.
It's one thing to try to trim your roster, but the idea is to trade three or four guys and get back at least one guy that makes your team better. In these trades, all we get back is a big pile of crap.

RE:Some roster trimming moves
If I was running the show and I knew that Shaq was out of the question, or maybe if the move was to get him, the idea is to take on bad 2 year contracts plus a good player for Walker/Laetner because next summer guess what, you have more expiring contracts to trade for a good player.
Thus the only way that I take on Davis and E Robs contracts is if I get Curry in the deal. I think they would have traded one of their picks or chandler to get rid of davis this year so why not curry for both of the bad contracts.
E Rob/Davis/Curry for Walker/Stackhouse or Walker/Laettner.

RE: Some roster trimming moves
Well, Madape, I disagree that all we get back is a big pile of crap, esp. where KVH is concerned. I, for one, think he would be a pretty good fit as a backup 3/4. T.T. - well, he's got the talent, but I'm not near as confident. Beyond that, IMO you're a loser when you don't get what you need out of the trade. The departure of Steve Nash should have been enough to show you that what this team really needs right now is flexibility, and these trades accomplish that (not to mention redistributing some of the logjam at SG to the SF position), both in the short term, by opening up the necessary roster spots for this year, and in the long term, because in doing so the Mavs won't be stuck having to pay several guys to play for other teams, and will have, as I noted, tons of expiring contracts the following year since nobody the Mavs take back has a contract that lasts for more than two years. These trades aren't no-brainers for the Mavs by any stretch, and you only do them if more attractive offers don't materialize, but in so far as Dallas gets what it needs most without having to give up ANY of the young kids, I think you pull the trigger on these trades.

Stressboy, we've already got 17 players, you're pushing us up to 18 with these moves. People keep posting these trade ideas that expand our roster, but they're just not going to get it done.
