Warriors name Richmond special assistant

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) - Mitch Richmond, a former Rookie of the Year with the Golden State Warriors, was brought back to the franchise Tuesday as a special assistant.

Richmond spent his first three seasons with the Warriors and was the NBA's Rookie of the Year in 1988. He is one of just four players in league history to average at least 21.0 points in their first 10 seasons.

In Golden State, Richmond helped form one of the NBA's best trios at the time with Tim Hardaway and Chris Mullin, who now serves as the Warriors' vice president of basketball operations.

"I'm really looking forward to this new opportunity," Richmond said. "I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent playing with the Warriors and the special connection that I felt with the tremendous fans in the Bay Area."

"We're thrilled to welcome Mitch back to the organization," Mullin said. "Mitch was a highly successful player in this league and was a consummate professional, two intangibles that will serve him well in his new position."

After being traded to Sacramento prior to the 1991 season, Richmond made six straight All-Star appearances, winning the game's Most Valuable Player honors in 1995.

Richmond also has played with Washington and the Los Angeles Lakers and has career averages of 21.0 points in 976 games. His final season was in 2001 with Los Angeles, when he won a championship ring.
