Default Qyntel Woods suspended by Blazers for alleged prize Dogfighting

Qyntel Woods suspended for alleged prize dogfighting

Qyntel denies abandoning pit bull

TUALATIN, Ore. -- The Portland Trail Blazers suspended reserve forward Qyntel Woods without pay Tuesday pending a team investigation surrounding alleged dogfighting.

Woods' Lake Oswego home was searched Monday by Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies, acting on a warrant obtained after allegations that Woods abandoned his pit bull -- reportedly because it would not fight for him.

No criminal charges have been filed.

"We are deeply disturbed by the developments in this case and we believe that suspending Qyntel is warranted and necessary," team president Steve Patterson said in a written statement.

"This organization will not accept this type of behavior and if these allegations prove to be true and if further steps are needed, we will not hesitate to take them," the statement said.

Dogfighting is a felony in Oregon. Promoting or conducting dogfighting is punishable by up to $100,000 in fines and five years in jail, according to state statutes.

Joel Manley, spokesman for the Clackamas County Sheriff's office, said deputies seized evidence in Woods' house that they believe was connected to dogfighting.

"We are going to analyze it from here and send it to the state crime lab and they will do a complete forensic analysis," Manley said.

Woods' agent, Raymond Brothers, denied that his client was involved with dogfighting. Brothers said he is appealing the suspension to the players' union.

Fellow teammates were stunned by the developments.

"Have they said he is guilty? If he's not guilty, how did he get suspended then?" guard Derek Anderson said. "That's the only thing I don't understand. I guess they have their own rules here, and I really can't make any comment on that. But I didn't know he was considered guilty enough to get suspended."

Forward Darius Miles said he has been to Woods' home several times and never saw evidence of animal mistreatment.

"I think it's a horrible situation," Miles said. "Qyntel was playing real good. I feel he should be practicing, he should be on the court."

Blazers general manager John Nash would not comment beyond Patterson's statement. When asked how long the suspension would last, he said: "As long as the investigation takes."

It is not the first time the 23-year-old Woods has been in trouble. He has previously been cited on marijuana possession charges and for driving with a suspended license.

Now in his third year with the Blazers, Woods was the 21st overall pick in the 2002 draft out of Northeast Mississippi Community College.

man, the blazers can find EVERY possible way to break the law.

dogfighting still occurs, erica, especially in bigger cities. You should watch "K-911" or "animal precinct" on animal planet. it seems that the fighting only occurs in low-income areas.

qyntel, you are making money. why in the hell would you do that.

dog-fighting is inhumane, and he deserves a stiff penalty. i had seen some stories on this before, that described the condition of the dog. pretty gruesome stuff.

Is there nothing else to do in Oregon except break the law?

Those gangstas should try fishing.

Qyntel's abandoning the poor, mistreated dog because it wouldn't fight, is an even more creative way of being inhumane than the starving and beatings that would have been part of it's training, or the actual prize fighting itself...

So if you're a no-name punk who allegedly mistreats animals, you get suspended. But if you're a superstar punk who allegedly rapes someone, you get a $120 million contract extension.

Interesting how NBA management works.

And, Superstar, don't forget that the team will be allowed to absorb some of your enormous expenses while you fly around for hearings and such.

I'm so disenchanted now days when it comes to the NBA.

It's like finding out that Santa Claus is only into his act for the chics and the money.

Oh, and btw, wouldn't this allegation against Qyntel be considered minor compared to the Trailblazers who are already convicted of domestic & sexual assault (among other crimes)?

Trail Blazers F Woods slapped with drug suspension

October 29, 2004

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) - Qyntel Woods continues to get himself into trouble.

The NBA on Friday suspended the Portland Trail Blazers' forward for five games for violating the league's drug program.

Woods will serve the penalty beginning with the first game he is eligible for in the regular season. When that first game is remains a question.

Woods is still under investigation and already is suspended without pay by the Trail Blazers on suspicion he participated or possibly hosted a dog-fighting event, both crimes in Oregon that carry possible jail time. Police have searched Woods' home and the Trail Blazers also are investigating the incident.

The 6-8 Woods has provided little more than a headache for Portland since being drafted 21st overall in 2002 out of Northeast Mississippi Community College. In 115 games, including eight starts, he has averaged 3.1 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Well at least he found himself a more traditional blazers way of getting in trouble, although i like the origonaloty of dogfighting.
