I've re-itereated my feelings on why I think this was the correct policy many times. It is a long-term strategic change of the cauldron of frustration that the middle-east has become. The culture of desctruction that those people are feeling has to be changed. Bush repeated it during his inaugural speech, of course leftists will just discount it as rhetoric because it's coming from a conservative.
The leftists and dems have no plan to deal with the situation, except appeasement and withdrawal from the world, sorry, not interested in withdrawing from the world. It's the same song they've been singing since their salad days of the 60's.
As far as uneducated, it just shows your(and most leftists) snobbery and bigotry, you don't have a clue how educated I am, but you can bet that that MAJORITY of americans are not all dumb rubes that you can look down upon, they are quite intelligent, quite sensical citizens.

RE: Eisenhower
An excerpt from a pretty long article about defeating islmaic terrorism. I'm not sure you have the attention span for it however...But give it a shot..
strategypage
Quote:
How does one defeat this Islamic terrorism? The simplest way is to bring good government and education to Moslem nations, and let them prosper. Overthrowing Saddam Hussein, easily the worst of a bad bunch of Moslem despots, and getting a democracy going in Iraq, is the Islamic radicals worst nightmare. It was always thought that Iraq would be one of the last nations to be overthrown by Islamic radicals. That’s because Saddam had built one of the most effective police states in the Moslem world. The problem there now is that the thugs, who made that police state work, are still in business. And just to show you how bizarre this whole business is, a year ago, the Saddam diehards and Islamic radicals joined forces in Iraq to try and prevent a democracy from being established. Both groups are natural enemies, and even if they forced coalition troops to leave, it would eventually have to come to a battle between Saddam’s secular thugs, and the Islamic radicals, to determine who would rule Iraq.

Quote:
Osama bin Laden, from his hiding place somewhere along the Pakistani-Afghan border, has sent out audio and video tapes urging on the al Qaeda faithful. Bin Laden barely mentions attacks on the infidels (non-Moslems) any more. All attention is on the terrorist heartland, and al Qaeda's desperate battle for survival. Things are not going well for al Qaeda.
The invasion of Iraq brought the war on terror back to its homeland. Nearly all al Qaeda operations since then have been in the Middle East, and most of the victims have been fellow Arabs. Middle Eastern governments have been forced to confront the terror that grew up in their backyard. This was particularly true of Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the Persian Gulf countries.
Before 911, Persian Gulf countries were pretty tolerant of al Qaeda. If you kept quiet, you could do just about anything you wanted. Wealthy, and religious, Saudis, were generous contributors to Islamic terrorists. The Saudi government encouraged religious charities to fund religious schools overseas, and in these schools, a fundamentalist Islam was taught, a form of Islam that praised the use of violence against infidels.
Even after 911, al Qaeda was popular with many Moslems, especially in the principal al Qaeda recruiting grounds of the Middle East. No more. Forced to defend their heartland, al Qaeda is killing mostly fellow Moslems these days. Moslems, especially Arabs, can no longer ignore al Qaeda violence, mainly because it is happening in their midst.

Quote:
The American invasion of Iraq is said to have inspired al Qaeda, and brought forth more recruits. Americans in Iraq are said to have made more Moslems hate the West. For those who bothered to notice, there were plenty of Moslems who hated the west before early 2003, or late 2001 for that matter. What the invasion of Iraq did was force many Moslem, and Western, governments to get more active in dealing with Islamic radicals and the terrorism some of them are so fond of. In the last three years, al Qaeda has all but ceased to exist as an organizations. More importantly, Moslems are facing up to Islamic terrorism as never before. All of a sudden, Moslems are asking hard questions about why most of the terrorism in the world is being carried out by Moslems. Unthinkable subjects, like problems or flaws within Islamic countries, is now openly discussed in the Moslem media.
The problem of Islamic terrorism isn't international, but local. And so are the solutions.

RE:Eisenhower
Ironic isn't it? As you may recall it was Ike who first spoke of the military industrial complex. I've always been amazed that in recent US history the one military leader elected pres may be the most pacifist, and was clearly vocal in his view of the negative influence military power can exert on government's decisionmaking.
underrated by many.

So you're saying the General was more of a pacifist than the Peanut Farmer?

RE: Eisenhower
This quote from Ike is in the same page:
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."
President Dwight D. Eisenhower
April 16, 1953
The same money expended on social issues would provoke similar effects on the economy that those traditionally linked to the spending in the military industry. With the exception of the oil and the inffluence in the zone, but preserving lives and quality of life for those who suffer, against intentional deaths.
It's a matter of choice.
