2006 NBA All Star game : USA vs The World
they just mentioned this on PTI and I think that it is a great idea
European players are clearly getting as good/better than some American players
of course this wont happen anytime soon, but I think it should be the future
Just like in the NHL(if there was one)
what do you guys think about this idea?

RE: 2006 NBA All Star game : USA vs The World
it's not there yet. maybe a few more years, then we could try it. the International players (can't just limit it to europe) could have a good starting squad - Nash, Ginobili, Dirk, Yao, Kirilenko (i'd assume this would be it), and a few good bench players that are all-star material (gasol, peja, Big Z), but after that, it's iffy. Parker? Magloire? Radmanovic? Turkoglu? good players, but I wouldn't call them all-stars. The US squad overall would just be a lot better.
Now this wouldn't really be as big a deal if we didn't care about getting everyone minutes. play with an 8 man rotation, and not worry about the end of the bench.
then we'd have damn good US players not making the squad because a less-deserving International player has to make it.
In my opinion, though, the NBA all-star game ain't broke, so why fix it?

I think the international team would win. Same reason the US lost in the olympics. Not any team players. You have guys like kobe that will just hog the ball and try to do everything themselves.

Duncan would be an international player...but do they use FIBA rules or what? could the game go abroad?

Being thrown together for an All Star game would negate a lot of the advantage that the foreign teams had over the U.S. in the Olympics. Take away chemistry and familiarity and individual talent is magnified.

I think the competition would be close enough so that whichever team Duncan played for would win.
I don't think the NBA will do it. The game would be taken so seriously that it might lead to problems.

RE:2006 NBA All Star game : USA vs The World
it would be awesome, though. people would actually care about the game...imagine the game being played in Madrid or Berlin. it would be insane and a lot of fun. the players would play hard, the fans would watch...it would be a lot like the Olympics, except it being played every year.
each year it alternates between the US and an international country...US plays with NBA rules on home court, international plays with FIBA rules on home court. fun.
Nash, Ginobili, Kirilenko, Dirk and Yao...Ilgauskus, Peja, Parker, Deng, Magloire, Gasol and Mutombo off the bench...pretty versatile roster.

but that's just the problem... would you classify deng and mutombo as all-stars? they're not even close.

Drop Carmello, Nash, Ginobli and Dirk and your allstar team is your US olympic team, right?

RE: 2006 NBA All Star game : USA vs The World
I'd really like to keep the AllStar game the same. I have a feeling that a US v. International allstar game would cause some hate/racism against the international stars. Every analyst would constantly say 'International team is too soft, doesn't play defense, etc.'

RE: 2006 NBA All Star game : USA vs The World
that's also true, Dub. good point. international players get enough of a bad rap as is, cause so many GMS are drafting them higher and higher, and they don't pan out (much like many high schoolers). do we really want a game where one side would more than likely be booed, simply because they weren't the US?
