Introducing themselves

New cast adds strength to core

By ART GARCIA
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Though the Western Conference champion Mavericks kept their core intact, significant changes were made. Familiar faces such as Marquis Daniels, Darrell Armstrong and Keith Van Horn were jettisoned and a new crew joined the fray.

Headlining the list of newcomers is a quartet of veterans and an intriguing rookie. Greg Buckner, Austin Croshere, Devean George, Anthony Johnson and Maurice Ager each bring something different to the table.

"The one constant about all of these guys is they're very coachable," assistant Joe Prunty said.

Greg Buckner

Guard/Forward, 6-4, 210

NBA experience:
7 years

Scouting report: Begins his second Mavs tour as a more complete player. Dogged defense helped "Buck" stick in the league and remains his calling card, but he has developed into a solid shooter with 3-point range. Led the league in steals-to-turnover ratio last season with Denver. Uses his strength and compact frame effectively to defend both smaller and taller opponents. Not a good ball-handler.

Austin Croshere

Forward, 6-10, 235

NBA experience:
9 years

Scouting report: A pro's pro who realizes his place in the pecking order behind Dirk Nowitzki. Hasn't shot for a high percentage throughout his career (41.0 FG, 34.4 3-PT), but opponents still feel the need to guard him on the perimeter. Keeps his man off the boards even when he doesn't get the rebound. Takes charges, goes after loose balls and makes hustle plays, but also has a tendency to overthink situations.

Devean George

Forward, 6-8, 235

NBA experience:
7 years

Scouting report: Physical forward with a ton of playoff and, more importantly for a team with lofty aspirations, championship experience. Most effective offensively on the catch-and-shoot. Good range with four seasons of at least 49 3-pointers. Solid rebounder and role player. Spent entire career in one system and is playing catch up on Avery Johnson's scheme. Isn't afraid to do the dirty work.

Anthony Johnson

Guard, 6-3, 195

NBA experience:
9 years

Scouting report: Physical, grind-it-out point guard. Not a fast-break, up-tempo, push-it-up-the-floor player. Has improved considerably since entering the league. Knows how to run a team and distribute the ball. Adequate mid-range shooter capable of hitting the occasional 3-pointer. Good defender who uses strength over quickness. Longer than most realize. Knows what he can and can't do well.

Maurice Ager

Guard, 6-5, 202

NBA experience:
Rookie

Scouting report: Unfair expectations of being the next "Josh Howard." Needs to learn the nuances of NBA game (rules, time management) beyond just the Mavs' system. Shoots the 3 effortlessly. Needs to improve decision-making, harness aggressiveness, become a better passer and defender. Can't drive to the basket at will as he did in college. Eager student who learns from his mistakes. Upside is obvious.

Others

Pops Mensah-Bonsu

(Forward, 6-9, 240, rookie): Intriguing athlete with potential; likely headed to Fort Worth.

Jose Barea

(Guard, 6-0, 175, rookie): After claiming the final roster spot, the heady point guard is also probably D-League-bound.

This is a great summary of what I saw in the preseason, especially Anthony Johnson's description... His game is the opposite of Devin Harris' - it doesn't matter who starts because they'll both be used for different tasks (like Damp & Diop or Julius Jones & Marion Barber on the Cowboys...)
