Default A little bit too much a fantasy deal, but . . .

Taking advantage of Portland's desire to get Mike Conley to play with Greg Oden and Danny Ainge's silliness, we get this:

Portland:

Gives up: Zach Randolph and Sergio Rodriguez

Gets: Theo Ratliff and the #5 pick

Why: Mainly to get Conley. Randolph is surplusage with Oden/Aldridge/Pryzbilla available. Rodriguez isn't necessary with Conley/Jack at the point. Salary cap relief in a year when Ratliff comes off the cap.

Line up:

Oden/Pryzbilla
Aldridge/LaFrentz
Outlaw/Webster/Miles
Roy/Jones
Conley/Jack/Dickau

Boston:

Gives up: Paul Pierce, Theo Ratliff (also works with Wally World); Brian Scalabrine and Kendrick Perkins and the #5 pick

Gets: Zack Randolph; Jason Terry; Erick Dampier; Josh Howard; and Mo Ager;

Why: Turns Paul Pierce, the #5 pick and junk into a young contender to win the Atlantic division.

Line up:

Jefferson/Dampier
Randolph/Gomez
Howard/Green
Szczerbiak/Ager
Terry/Rondo

Dallas:

Gives up: Jason Terry; Erick Dampier; Josh Howard; Mo Ager

Gets: Paul Pierce; Brian Scalabrine; Kendrick Perkins; and Sergio Rodriguez

Why: The second star to play with Dirk.

Line up:

Diop/Perkins/Mbenga
Dirk/Scalabrine
Pierce/Buckner
Free Agent/Stackhouse
Devin Harris/Rodriguez

The real problem here is that you have to get a 2 or a 3 with the MLE that can start and play significant minutes so that Stackhouse can stay as the sixth man and Buckner has only a limited role. But Dirk and Pierce are a tough offensive tandem, Scalabrine is as good as any back up we've had for Dirk. Perkins is adequate as part of the center rotation and Harris/Rodriguez are the best young point guard duo this side of Ford/Calderon.

PP's value is not Dampier, Terry, and Josh.

Default I beg to disagree

Under the NBA rules, you can only play 5 players at a time.

A starting five of:

Diop
Dirk
Pierce
Stackhouse
Harris

is very much better than a five of:

Dampier
Dirk
Howard
Terry
Harris

Pierce is a major star. Of course, you discount the value of Perkins (a young, respectable rotation player at the 5), Scalabrine (at least the equal of KVH or Croshere); and Rodriguez (a young, talented point guard--maybe as good as Harris) altogether.

If Dallas is to win in the near future--if not you might as well trade Dirk and rebuild--Dallas needs another superstar. Terry, Howard & Dampier together aren't close to worth such a player.
